how to buy more clothes

for those of you who buy clothes regularly - once a month or more - how much do you spend on average and do you do it?!? own salary/partner's salary/credit or store cards/buy and sell on eBay/some other mysterious enterprise?

I am looking for ideas!

gah! HOW do you do it

I have some disposable income every month that I usually use for clothes/beauty purchases- I don't spend a lot on socialising these days and most of the gallivanting that I do is done with DH which we tend to pay from the disposable we have after essentials in our joint account.

If I've bought something reasonably dear (ie not primark type prices) and not ended up loving it or wearing it as much as I thought I would and it will sell for a decent price (Boden, etc) I would ebay it and probably use the money for other clothes.

If I'm buying online, I always try to find a discount code ( there is usually one about) and don't buy clothes from shops that frequently have sales until their discounts are on (White stuff, fat face, M&S, Wallis are the big offenders)

Sometimes if I'm buying clothes for a new season (winter/summer) I put it on my credit card and pay off over 2 months Blush

Clothes are my weakness, and I do find myself buying stuff most months but I'm happy to spend less on alcohol etc and be frugal with other things.

I used to spend money I didn't have on 'stuff' but I'm much more cautious now and return stuff quickly if I change my mind about it and try to buy more classic clothes that all go together more. I do have some debts (which I'm steadily chipping away at) and would like to be saving more so I am trying to cut back on clothes purchases.

I have a small amount of 'treat' money per month which is guilt free. I'm frugal in other areas eg bring my lunch to work, cheap car, don't smoke, rarely drink or go out .

MCSpammer · 18/07/2014 19:38

discount codes! good idea, I never think of this.

I seem to fritter my disposable income away on nothing, perhaps I should draw out half of it in cash at the beginning if the month and set it aside and make do with the other half for the rest of the stuff (coffees/magazines/fresh herbs that lie sadly wilting in the fridge) and then spend the put aside stuff on clothes at the end if the month.

I have a bit of an issue with reselling. got some gorgeous silk dresses that I've worn a couple if times (once) but I rarely go anywhere these days. but they are beautiful and I love them.

I need to be more compartmental with my money I think!

I love shopping online or in person I don't mind. So I have always worked a budget out to enable me to shop. I only use cash or a debit card but no credit. Even my next account is a pay as you go. If I haven't got the money I can't shop.

I do sometimes sell the dc outgrown clothing I find there is too much women's clothing 10/12 out there that it would go for minimum bid and I'd feel peeved and lose out. So I might sell bundles on Facebook. But mainly I keep my clothes now as determined not to need a 24 again.

MCSpammer · 18/07/2014 20:07

they have pay as you go store cards? how does that work (can't think in this heat)

MCSpammer · 18/07/2014 20:08

oh and also is selling on Facebook better than eBay and how does one do that?

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 18/07/2014 20:49

No. It's online I order and pay with my debit card. I closed the credit facility. I can't be trusted with credit Blush

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 18/07/2014 20:50

Facebook you search local groups so buy and sell town and join then take pics and list on the group. No fees just selling locally and people collect and pay cash.

eBay and sales. I don't buy randomly, I look for missing gaps in my wardrobe, for example recently I realised I didn't have many sleeveless nice tops for when it was warmer, so I focused on that. I also buy out of season clothes in the sales, for example it can be hard to find red jumpers in winter because they are all bought out for Christmas so if I see one in summer sales I will get it then .
I have never used a store card at all, or a credit card for clothes. I just love a bargain. I only go full price if I have a special occasion, I e. a wedding, and even then I usually plan ahead in the sales.

Pre children days, I used to transfer 300 to a savings account the day after payday & managed to build a nest egg which has now gone thanks to having kids.

I now buy atleast every six weeks or so but items that I need & which fit into my existing wardrobe. I cant afford to buy a whole outfit anymore so make do & mend more.

Book a free apt with a stylist at John Lewis, they will help you build a capsule wardrobe. You dont have to buy what they suggest but you will get ideas on colours & styles which suit you.

I buy on ebay - usually very good quality American labels that are less well known over here. I usually pay between £5-10 for an item.

PeppermintInfusion · 18/07/2014 22:19

Checking where you fritter away money is a big thing for me- back before I kept track of my spending/budgeted I had no idea where my money was going and bought too much stuff anyway. Now I know that taking in my packed lunch most days, avoiding the vending machine for drinks and not buying mags etc for the sake of it really saves me a lot and I tend to think to myself now would I rather have some clothes or a lot of unhealthy junk food, etc.

MrsEboJones76 · 18/07/2014 22:32

I don't drink or smoke. I run instead of having a gym membership. I work full time so set myself a monthly allowance and buy something every month. I also ebay things I buy from Topshop, Boden etc... as they sell on well.
I'm strict on buying things that fit into my existing wardrobe, I stick to a colour palette and I buy accessories to create different looks.

MCSpammer · 19/07/2014 07:32

lots of lovely great advice here.

I love charity shops so think I will start going to these more often. I've taught myself some basic sewing and am feeling inspired Channel 4's programme 'This Old Thing'.

The first thing I need to do is get in my wardrobe sort the wheat from the chaff!

I used to resell on Ebay but haven't bothered lately. My clothing budget comes from DP's wage or from the £1000 a year my lovely grandparents give me for birthday and Christmas. I am quite tight with it so that it is there if I see something I really want.

We don't have a huge income by any means but our outgoings are few (no car, no debts, no alcohol or takeaways), so there is always a bit left over.

I buy clothes most months;generally from places like Primark, Select, H&M, Ebay, and occasionally Topshop and River Island. I know some on here say to go for quality rather than quantity, but I love fashion, and enjoy buying the latest items, so cheaper shops it is!

I don't work, but DH earns fairly well. I don't have a set budget as such each month, but tend to pick things up as I see them, depending on whether we can afford it or not.

I also sell things we have no use for every 3 or 4 months on Ebay, and usually spend the paypal money on clothes.

Greengardenpixie · 21/07/2014 13:41

codes, i do have a directory account, i also sell my clothes on ebay. Did a clear out of some of my white stuff/seasalt/toast items and made £300 for my holiday!
