What to wear as a juror?

I've been selected for jury service. What would be appropriate to wear? A suit, black trousers and t shirt, or can I wear jeans?

ta Blush

You don't need to say anything Just. We had note pads and if we wanted to attract the usher's attention, we just wrote a note and tore it noisily out of the pad. The usher would come and collect the note and deal with whatever it said.

Hmm...the mileage sounds like a lot of bother. As it's on a main bus route so will probably have to get the bus then.

HR have got back to me saying I can have to claim loss of earnings but they don't really know how it works as it's so rare (strange with 1000+ employees).

Ik've done it twice and had practically no sitting around, straight in both times, full on cases. Never got to read all my books.

Yes to layers, the first time I did it was mid summer but the courtroom was freezing with air con. Also yes to comfort, it's a lot of sitting, you don't want to be wearing overly tight jeans for example. I would also say don't wear anything too distinctive, you may go out at lunchtime and encounter the accused (if they're on bail) or their friends and family, this happened to my friend, realised the accused was behind him in the queue at a shop, better to blend into the background.

I'm sure they can work it out. Here's the official info on loss of earnings/expenses claims.

And here's HMRC instructions for employers wrt payments to staff when on jury service.

the most smartly-dressed person in the room tends to be elected foreman.

You might want to avoid this, but then you might find the person they do elect is a useless bigot.

specialsubject · 18/07/2014 17:10

I was also going to mention the importance of blending in. Nothing distinctive, no statement jewellery, and tie back long hair so you can change appearance. You can end up in a lift with the accused!

Not wearing jeans doesn't equal having to buy new clothes.

TheRainDrops · 18/07/2014 22:10

I did jury service for an inquest. As it involved a death we were advised to avoid 'frivolous' clothing (that's a direct quote!). Jeans were totally fine, I guess they just wanted to avoid crazy costumes although god knows who would for something like that!
Enjoy your jury experience, it's good to be part of the justice system!

CointreauVersial · 18/07/2014 23:08

I wore office-y clothes because I was planning on going to the office if discharged (which I was after a day and a half).

Jeans seemed a bit.....disrespectful to me, but perhaps I'm just out of touch (it was a while ago).

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/07/2014 23:34

My first jury service was just over two weeks, everyone started in smart casual and it got more casual as time went on. I think as long as you avoid party/beach wear/revealing clothes you'll be fine.

squoosh · 18/07/2014 23:36

I did jury service for a month and wore jeans a lot of the time. As did a lot of the other jurors.

There is no dress code, dress as you see fit.

squoosh · 18/07/2014 23:37

The outfits some of the witnesses wore though would curl your hair!

petalchops · 18/07/2014 23:42

Just finished jury service. No strict dress code although someone did mention no shorts. Loads of people wore jeans and tshirts others just smart casual. We were told to just be comfortable.

The loo thing was a real worry for me but they didn't seem to do more than one hour without a break of some sort.
