Product to stop 3rd/4th day frizz on curly hair?

I have curly hair and try not to wash my hair more than every 3-4 days to stop it drying out.

I've tried loads of different styling products, but whatever I use my hair looks good for the first day or two, but by days 3 and 4 there is a certain amount of frizz. The curls themselves still look pretty good, it's just there is a layer of frizz above them.

I cannot seem to find anything which really works to use on my dry hair for days 3 and 4 - does anyone have anything to recommend to use for those later days - or do I just accept that curly hair will always turn a bit frizzy unless I wash it more often?!

Marking my place, I have exactly the same problem. Anything with silicon in makes it frizzy even on the second day. The weather makes a difference as well.

I'm just amazed that you can get to days 3 & 4 without it being a tangled matted mess! I have to wash my curls at least every other day although I generally do it every day as it looks and feels much better.

I've been used products for Afro hair now for a few years and my hair has never been better. I don't have to use anything to combat the frizz now as I don't seem to suffer with it unless it's humid or rainy. Perhaps worth a try?

What products are you using at the moment OP?

NannyLouise29 · 17/07/2014 11:33

I used to tie my hair out of the way when I had a shower because I was convinced the steam was frizzing my hair. I now hop in the shower and with wet hands run my fingers over the top (frizzy) layer. Seems to tame it far better than any product would (on dry hair anyway).

I hesitate to say it as I know loads of people hate it - but at the moment I use either Frizz Ease gel or mousse Grin

I've tried all sorts - Umberto Gianinni gel, Boots Curl Creme, Aveda curly hair enhancer, Ouidad gel to name a few - had the same problem with all of them.

I've never heard of those Aussie products, I'll look them up now!

Not thought of using products for Afro hair as my curls are quite big rather than tight like afro hair. Maybe I should look into it....

The advice I had from my hairdresser who specialises in curly hair is to ditch shampoos with sulphates in ( too harsh ) and conditioners/ products with silicone in. ( silicone ends up coating your hair with an impenetrable barrier making it harder for conditioners to penetrate the hair shaft)

He advised me to use Bodyshop Rainforest range and umberto giannini pink gel as a styling product. No Frizz Ease!

I've been seeing him since last November and my hair is now in much better condition and much less frizzy. You can also try washing your hair just using conditioner.

The Curly Girl Handbook is very good and well worth reading if you struggle with your curly hair!

My curls are ringlets, not afro at all, yet looking better than ever now.

Another benefit is that they are sooooo cheap compared to all the other products aimed for curly heads on the shelf!

ShinySilver · 17/07/2014 12:08

Scarlet yes I have read that about silicones and for quite a while I didn't use any, but didn't really notice my hair looking different.

I am using the Bodyshop Rainforest conditioner (after reading about it on another mumsnet thread!) - the deep conditioner really makes my curls bouncy.

Do you find the Umberto gel makes your hair really crispy on day 1? That is the main reason I stopped using it as I thought my hair looked awful for the first day.

I haven't tried the no sulphate shampoo because my hair is quite grey so I use a purple shampoo to avoid yellow tones (trying to find a haircare regime that suits curls and grey hair is proving tricky!) but I do use an Aveda shampoo which I think is fairly natural. Equally that is why I haven't gone down the wash with conditioner route. I have a real horror of having frizzy yellow toned grey hair like some mad old lady, when I'm still under 40!

I use the loreal ever riche range my hair has never looked better full glossy curls and the ability to get a brush through it dry for the first time in 36 years! I use the shampoo/conditioner and then the spray conditioner.

Scarletohello · 17/07/2014 14:07

I use Bumble and Bumble leave in conditioner before applying the gel. I partially blow dry it from wet then leave it to try naturally. I know what you mean about the crispiness, when my hairdresser first put it on I was horrified and thought I was going to look like Michael Jackson! But then he told me to shake my hair and ruffle the roots and I had lovely defined curls!

There is also a range especially designed for curly hair called Devacurl. It's available on Amazon and you can buy a trial pack to see if it suits you.

Body Shop Rainforest stuff is excellent. Ditto Boots Pink Curl Creme and Boots purple gel. Agree that Frizz Ease is the devil's work.

Amarena, please share the Afro product details!
