What age for an underwire bra

spottymoo · 16/07/2014 17:19

Dd is 12 and a 34B she's seen lots of pretty bras she likes but their underwired are they likely to cause her damage as she's still developing or is that just a random piece of rubbish I've heard?

Rubbish I reckonSmile

Naoko · 16/07/2014 17:26

It's rubbish. The bra just needs to fit properly. Are you sure 34B is the correct size? That seems a very large band size for a twelve year old. Don't take her to M&S, they wouldn't know a well fitting bra if one came and bit them on the --boob- arse. Have a look here to measure her.

Bunbaker · 16/07/2014 17:28

Ditto measuring properly. To be a 34 under the bust she would have to be quite well built.

Happy36 · 16/07/2014 17:29

I think it's fine. It's really difficult to find bras without wire nowadays anyway. Just make sure it fits well and she is comfortable...and keep an eye on it as she grows.

Pangaea · 16/07/2014 17:29

Rubbish. Make sure the wire sits flat on her ribs and she'll be fine.

StatisticallyChallenged · 16/07/2014 18:20

Unless she is a very large 12 year old then she hasn't been fitted correctly... Which probably involved marks and Spencer! Underwired is fine as long as it fits right.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/07/2014 18:22

DD is 13 and a 34 D, she's had to get under-wired ones.

Clayhead · 16/07/2014 18:25

My 12 year old's a 28C and she's not exactly skinny! Her bras are underwired.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 16/07/2014 18:32

My 13y wears 32C M&S some underwired some not.

Totally failing to get bra intervention to work is a family failling.

I tried, it hurt, I put an extender in my bra. I can wear it all day.

DD's have tried on loads, I buy what they are happy with and refuse to worry about the lables.

Hulababy · 16/07/2014 18:36

Some of my 12y DD's bras are underwired. I read that so long as they fit properly then it is fine.

But, like others, are you sure your DD is really a 34?

It really is worth using the bra intervention threads to make sure she is wearing the right bra.

DD went in to a 30D/DD after following that advice, though actually measured a 28E (we tried different bras and the 28 was just too tight and the larger cup in a 28 was v hard to get) ....before that had been in totally the wrong size due to the old fashioned way of measuring. It changed her shape massively and even her posture looks so much better as a result.

StatisticallyChallenged · 16/07/2014 18:40

it is very common for younger women in particular to go a band size up from their measured size as they tend to not have much in the way of over rib padding, and they don't need quite as much lift or support! But a 34 is actually a fairly big band size for a correctly fitted 12 or 13 year old.

Picturesinthefirelight · 16/07/2014 18:50

I'm a 40 year old size 12 woman & only a 32 band. Are you sure she is fitted right.

What are her actual under and over bust measurements?

mathanxiety · 16/07/2014 20:46

It's a random piece of rubbish.

DD4 is 12 and 34C. I have measured her properly -- followed bra intervention threads, and as a result she looks far better than pre intervention. She has been using underwire bras for a year. She was a very tall (and large) 11 yo (she is 5'4" now at 12) and will probably stay on the tall and large side. It's not so much a matter of age as size.

spottymoo · 16/07/2014 21:43

It was debenhams that measured her 29 underneath and 34 on top.the 34Bdoes fit snug and the cups have no gaps or anything.

That's too big a band size then

She should try a 30 D /DD

spottymoo · 16/07/2014 21:51

Thank you I'll take her into town to try a few on any ideas of wear sells them with a 30 back that's not going to cost me a small mortgage tend to go to supermarkets and matalan for underwear and their doesn't seem to be any in a 30 back

I get dds from M & S but she's a 28 B (don't let them measure her)

John Lewis are quite good.

ThisBitchIsResting · 16/07/2014 22:53

M and S do nice t shirt bras in 30D. You have to order them online and get them delivered (free) to store, then try on, then you can immediately return any that don't fit. I am this size and got some bargains in their sale, might be some left.

Fyi -- the number in bra sizes is the band size (around the chest under the boobs), and the letter is number of inches the boob extends from the band.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 16/07/2014 23:46

Also have you tried to get a teen girl to try on a D cup.

My well built size 12, 16y will, but her slight size 8 younger sister, no way!

Hulababy · 17/07/2014 07:50

My 12y has no problem wearing a 30d/dd. Was happy to try them on and declared they fit much better than her old bras.

We got the 30Ds from m and s - they do them Instore at our shops.

StatisticallyChallenged · 17/07/2014 07:56

Sorry if we offended mathanxiety. It is possible to be 12 and a 34, it's just quite unusual and more of an outlier IYSWIM mainly as most of them are still relatively small body wise . The vast majority of 34 band wearing young teens will be in the wrong bra simply because the main places they get taken for fitting -m&s, la senza, Debenhams etc- still do the old plus four method. I suspect they'd have shoved your dd in a 38aa!

RubyGoat · 17/07/2014 08:05

If you are near a big city with a M&S, you could do worse than look in there to see if they have a reduced rail. I'm 30D/DD depending on cut, & my nearest city store had lots of 'end of line' bras at about a third of the normal price. I got 3 really pretty bras for 31.

Just don't let them near her with the measuring tape!

mathanxiety · 18/07/2014 03:30

No worries StatisticallyChallenged DD4 is very happy to be taller and larger than DD3, who is a very tiny 16 yo (and actually DD4 looks set to overtake DD2 before she tops out) she gets new clothes and coats now, a happy experience for her, having spent her life in hand me downs up to about age 10.5. I found out her true measurement after trying to convince her that she couldn't possibly be too big for the 32B bras that I thought would fit her. We took out the tape and I was Shock and Blush
