Items of clothing you still mourn...

Just doing the ironing and I have realised that my favourite ever French Connection black t-shirt looks awful - those mystery holes around the tummy and and a bit faded. I've had it for about 4 years and they don't do that style any more.

It got me thinking about clothes I have loved and lost…. they are often not the most expensive, just great staples.

  • my bright pink high-waisted ankle skimming trousers circa 1992. Leant them to someone and never saw them again. they will have been in fashion at least twice since then (and I would love to know if I could still squeeze into them!!)
  • a gold dress from the sixties that was given to me for a fancy dress party by a family friend. Lent it to a friend at uni and never got it back but it was fab!

My favourite blue jumper is past it's best too Sad

A black velvet tailored jacket from Monsoon with silver buttons, that was fitted like a seamed denim jacket. Eventually the elbows looked a little worn.

A navy and white print wrap dvf style dress. Eventually the cotton seams rotted after 10 or so years regular wear.

A buttery soft leather, peep toe black wedge sandal that didn't like the heat of Venice one August. The soles were never the same again. Sigh.

I had a fabulous silk skirt cut on the bias 17 years ago, I loved everything about it, it was cream with so many tiny bluish flowers on it. Had to be worn with a plain top and looked fabulous with heels. God I felt a million dollars every time I wore it.
It got hooked up with a load of washing, I didn't realise and it went through the machine. It was doll sized. I still rue that day.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/07/2014 20:30

An oasis ankle length black skirt, split to mid thigh. It looked fab, it was made of polyester, the iron was set to cotton Sad

Circa 1998

Lifelong hatred of ironing Angry

petitdonkey · 15/07/2014 20:41

I sometimes wish I lived back when everything was made by a tailor - I have a fab black whistles dress which I love - I took it to be copied but it's just not the same.

I had a great checked shirt (blue and red mainly but a bit Elmer the Elephant check) used to wear it with a great pair of denim shorts and red , T bar crape soled sandals .. I was eight.. Thought i was the bees knees..

Also a great pair of red skinny cords worn with soft tan leather knee 'robin hood' type knee length boots bought from Denmark .. when i was 20 something inthe 80's .. Fell over broke the heel of the boots and ripped the cord . Sad ( and no i wasnt pissed!)

Oh and mint green cheese cloth button down shirt witha pleat up the back (inmy teens teens) wore that until it fell apart.. and a long an indian cotton skirt ...OK .. it was the 70s! but i recently bought a Monsoon dress which in indian cottton print which remind me of that skirt ..

Ludways · 15/07/2014 20:42

Every item size 10, I ever owned! Sigh!

Black parent leather high winkle pickers, they were fk'n fabulous!!

maudpringles · 15/07/2014 20:47

A fabulous pair of black leather boots my sister bought me, I gave them to a jumble sale and regreted it straight after.
I have never told my sister.

Laska42 · 15/07/2014 20:48

Also had a great pair of Danish wood and leather clogs in various shades of blue...and pink and beige suede platform cork-soled clogs that my mum said id break my ankle in
(gosh i was a total stylista inthe 70s!)Grin

and a great Planet pale grey skater dress from the 90s that i got rid of because i put on weight.. it would fit now and be really in fashion

I still have my Monsoon black and green velvet midi dress i wore for my 40th .. and it fits, .. but sadly not come back in fashion yet

Not the same league as some on here but
a lovely black longish cardi from topshop with a little bit of 'give' in it and kind of tiny cut out holes pattern which you could barely see iyswim -just disappeared

Very stretchy and comfy dark blue turn-up jeans from primarni with an oversized diamanté rivet button which came off couldn't be repaired Confused had to get rid

again very comfy slight 'give' banana republic black non-work-type trousers -victim of a cull

very soft fawn coloured fleece in my size ie not baggy and awful from Japan the shop victim of cull

lovely soft perfectly good shorter light grey cardi -as above

a square necklined on hip cotton sort of tunic black topshop- as above
and ditto dark brown with details from next- shrank upwards Shock

Lovely soft cream cardi from an independent boutique with a same-coloured 'rosette' detail of dd1's would be handy for dd2 -just disappeared

I could go on....

Thank goodness nicky hambleton-jones isn't on anymore and I don't listen anymore

Provencalroseparadox · 15/07/2014 21:11

A dress my mum had in the 80s. It was bright blue with spaghetti straps and had a matching sparkly jacket. She died in 1988 and, although I do have her fabulous fake fur coat, I really really wish I had this dress.

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/07/2014 21:15

Some bright red killer heels, which had little holes punched in them. They were definitely pulling shoes. I got very pissed one night when wearing them, threw up over my feet and never got the lumps of sick out of the holes.

OddFodd · 15/07/2014 21:15

A black cotton button-fronted drop waisted dress with patch pockets. I wore it with a really heavy belt but it was so versatile. I wore away the fabric eventually. No idea where I got it from.

Also (((denim jacket)))

There are other things that still give me a pang but I don't mourn them in the way I do the death of that dress (in about 1996 :o)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/07/2014 21:18

A lovely striped knit dress from Karen Millen three years ago - it had a sort of ruche running diagonally and it clung but made me look as if I had a waist.

DH shrank it in the wash. Hmm

Also my gorgeous 70s coat (inherited from mum). It's not dead yet but it needs reweaving. It is gorgeous autumny shades of burnt orange and dark red and it is definitely not to everyone's taste but I love it!

I guess I shouldn't mourn it, but ten years ago I bought a lovely black polo neck from Topshop that looked amazing with high boots and a mini skirt. It unravelled in two weeks. If I still had it, I'd look a total twat in that outfit anyway. But ...

If we're allowed jewellery, I am seriously sad about the necklace I had from age 9, which I lost last year. It was a little cross with a garnet in the middle and pearls on the points, and I loved it. Sad

AmberNectarine · 15/07/2014 21:28

petit! lovely to see you around!

I miss my 'pulling top' was a black/pink/orange floral off the shoulder number from H&M. Never. Failed.

nutdust · 15/07/2014 21:32

oh another one ive just remembered: an H&M black top, really unusual shape. high, boater neckline, fitted but not clingy in a thick, black matte satin type fabric. sort of batwing short sleeve that was slashed at side so when you lifted arms, you could see side bra. i always wore my sexiest black bra. in my fantasy i was rocking a v cool alison goldfrapp (shes my girl crush) vibe. i wore it with black shorts, opaque tights & heeled boots. and dark green glittery eyes. musta been pretty ok as it bagged me the sexy keyboard guy at an electro night in 2002!
the aforementioned sleeves were its downfall. they ripped.
(apols for long & indulgent essay there. this is a powerful thread!)

punygod · 15/07/2014 21:35

My black high heeled Repetto Mary Janes.

The only heels I've ever been able to walk and dance in and my bastarding dog ate them while I was recovering from a hangover on the couch.

They were divine Hmm

wellnowthenmardybum · 15/07/2014 21:38

I had a lovely pair of topshop brown boots. I wore them day in day out and loved them, until they got a hole in. Do you know when people are pregnent but they are in so much denial they convice themselves they aren't? Well I convinced myself these boots didn't have a hole right in the front and carried on wearing them as if nothing was wrong. My mother then FORCED me to throw them out one day and I cried. Not just a tea, proper full on snotty noesed struggling to breath sobbing. My family have never let me live it down.

Laska42 · 15/07/2014 21:45

I used to wear my skinny cords and Robin Hood boots with lightweight indian cotton smocky things or flowing batwing tops .. very ABBA .. sparkly eyeshadow the lot .. Blush

Or even later went for the the same sort of thing (high boots skinny trousers) boot with a white Dandy Highwayman shirt Adam Ant style.. (didnt quite go so far as the white nose stripe though)..and had short spiky hair .. I liked the androgynous cross dressing thing.. (but was young skinny and dare I say it raher beautiful in those days .. even though i didnt realise it then)

BillStickersIsInnocent · 15/07/2014 21:45

A black scoop neck top from Oasis or Warehouse I think. Was tight fitting around shoulders and sleeves but flared out from boobs. Really flattering on me.

A fab little denim jacket. Orange satchel. White crinkly cotton topshop sun dress. Oh and a beautiful black wool coat with massive furry collar, again from Topshop. I have no idea what happened to any of these sadly.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 15/07/2014 21:55

My Pepe jeans which cost me a week's wages back in the 80's. They fit me better than any other jeans, before or since. They finally ripped just a bit too much (think a leg fell off!) and so they were thrown.

And a striped mod jacket, again early 80's, that I wore to a Jam concert. I really can't remember what happened to it but, oh I miss it.

almapudden · 15/07/2014 21:57

A brown 'tweed' jacket from Zara that I found hanging on a fence post outside my college one very boozy night and claimed as my own.

Best drunken theft ever: I wore it almost every day for six years. Eventually the lining was in tatters and it lost its shape entirely. I threw it away last year and still miss it!

WallyBantersJunkBox · 15/07/2014 21:59

Just a note - if you own a Harrington jacket from the 80's and are thinking of throwing it, they are making a revival. Grin

DeadCert · 15/07/2014 22:06

An amazing bottle green knee length leather coat my Mum gave me. Stolen. Fricking bastards.

A lovely dragonfly top from Miss Selfridge.

A Pucci print dress. I know you've got it "KB from my town." Hmm

A suede equine inspired patchwork skirt. Would have been in fashion twice by now.

DreamingAlice · 15/07/2014 22:13

My brown wool Rebecca Taylor trousers that fit so well. Ravaged by moths!

williaminajetfighter · 15/07/2014 22:20

1985 and I've just bought the best oversized jumper from Benetton. It's a gorgeous thick wool In a black and mustard pattern with a crew neck and falls mid thigh. I wear it with a black skirt and it looks sooo cool.

It cost a bomb and I drool over it. So too does my friend Todd's girlfriend Tiffany who begs me to borrow it...then washes it and puts it in the dryer. It came back as a tiny toddler size mustard smock. Waaahhh
