... all washed out, colour is non existent, a really flat dishwater browny colour.

I think I'm just going to have to admit defeat and dye it, aren't i?

I would. I thought I'd be all cool and the gang about letting my hair go grey until it started to go. It did Nothing for me other than make me look and feel miserable.

F4ttyBumBum · 08/07/2014 20:46

How about using a home dye semi-permanent for a bit of oompph but not full coverage so you don't get those harsh grey roots with permanent dye?

JoyceDivision · 08/07/2014 20:55

F4ttyBumBum, that's what I was wanting to avoid, the really obvious dye-line, so may have to consider a semi-permanent

Zucker, I agree, I have been waving the going grey banner but look like a used dishcloth

Maybe it is more to do with adapting your make-up and clothing. What you call dishrag might be another person's view of classy taupe.

Hair products are important with grey hair. What are you using? Are you giving it a go with a silver toning shampoo once a week?

What was your colouring before? Is the change dramatic?

PacificDogwood · 08/07/2014 21:14

You need henna Grin

littlewhitebag · 08/07/2014 21:27

I suspect my hair is very, very grey but i have it highlighted professionally and the hairdresser uses ashy tones, always four different shades. It means i never have that grey stripe when it grows in as the tones in the dye match my actual grey tones. However i am very blonde. This may not work so well if your hair is dark.

Milmingebag · 08/07/2014 21:27

Noooo henna can turn bozo the clown on grey hair.

PacificDogwood · 08/07/2014 21:29

Not when you use caca (I know!) brun

WowOoo · 08/07/2014 21:34

Highlights work well for blending in on darker hair too. I had 3 or 4 'tones' or colours put in last time. It wasn't glaringly obvious either like a full colour can be. Worse when it grows out too.

I'd go for highlights. I am saving like mad at the moment as I can't wait to get mine done properly.
Until then, I'm trying to be mousey and grey with pride but failing miserably!

JoyceDivision · 08/07/2014 21:35

I have v short pixie crop, and weardark plain clothes ( ilook so daft in brights and pastels)

I just know the stronger colour of dye seems to lift my skin, and there is only a tiny bit of greyat themoment, i was hoping it would come throu thicker so i look funkygrey, butat themo I just have a bitof saltand pepper greycobwebs!

If you've got lovely short hair you can go for a home job. I don't know why I assumed you had longer hair.

No point spending a fortune at hairdressers when there's not much hair for them to dye. Another good thing about short hair!

Milmingebag · 08/07/2014 21:47

Caca brun is an indigo henna mix isn't it? That is still going to give off the badger within a fortnight.

OP. I think wearinga palette of dark colours but with grey added to them would work with your new colouring and not take you out of your comfort zone.

Excuse the seasonal colour suggestion (not a system I personally believe in) but if you google soft summer deep palette -that is sort of the range of colours I am suggesting. Personally I love grey hair with black dramatic clothing, bold silver jewellery and red accessories/lipstick but it has to be the right grey to pull it off.

Do you think your natural colouring has softened or is the grey stark in places and so you are feeling washed out because it is high contrast around the face for example? What make-up do you wear?

JoyceDivision · 08/07/2014 21:47

haha, yes, I agree, I am a cheapskate and am Shock at hair dye prices in salon when I can dig out the towel of doom to throw over my shoulders before slapping dye over bathroom and staining all the grout patiently trying not to dye my ears a chocolate truffle smoky golden bronze whatever they call medium brown these days

OP posts:
JoyceDivision · 08/07/2014 21:50

think my natural colouring has softened and lost any oomph, don't wear make up unless a big night out ( I'm a lost cause, aren't I?)

I've stopped dyeing mine dark and I'm letting it go grey. Im going to stick some highlights in (I do my own) in the next week or two. I have about an inch if grey, I have short hair. If it looks pretty crap when its grey I'll go platinum Grin

Milmingebag · 08/07/2014 22:08

No you aren't a lost cause but just a bit of make-up is needed because of lost pigmentation in the skin and to create a bit of contrast.

Here's how you can do it on the cheap-

Buy Glamour Magazine this monthand get the Clinique Mascara (it's fabulous) for £2. I have stocked up.

Eye shadow palette- MUA Superdrug. There is a matte one with natural and smokey tones for £6. Excellent colours.

Revlon lip butter in pink truffle is the perfect brown/pink natural that will polish your look without looking OTT.

MUA do these creme blush sticks which I have heard raved about and again only a couple of quid.

Eyeliner- go for charcoal rather than black and smudge it so it isn't harsh. Avon glimmersticks are very good.

For hair- Touch of Silver by Provoke is great at keeping the greys sparkling and accentuating cool tones in hair.

The thing with hairdye is there isn't one that can truly replicate the lovely coolness of silvering hair because they all contain red. They have to contain red because the hydrogen peroxide bleaches the hair and would show through green without it. You therefore are never going to get that seamless blend between even the still brown hair and the dye as it grows out.

I bet with a few tweaks your hair would look stunning.

I think you need to move into my house and style me everyday!!!! will check out the glamour magazine
