Should you cut your hair short when you are 40? 50? 60? 70? .....

My hair is past my shoulders. A lot of people say i suit it. I am 46. I wear it up most of the time but do on occasion wear it down. A lot of people have commented about how i suit it down. I do have a young looking face and all my life people have been astounded that i tell them my oldest son is 27. What i want to know is, do you think that long hair should be chopped when you get older? generally, do people look better with short hair as they age? Just curious!

Depends on your head shape and how you've aged. Probably 65ish,

I cropped my hair when I was 18 and am now 41.
Shirt hair suits me.
Long hair doesn't.
That's it really :)

quirkychick · 08/07/2014 16:12

Long hair suits me, I am 43 and have very thick, curly hair. The length pulls the volume down a bit; short it's just a pain with curls going every which way.

noddy I saw your link to her on the other thread about long hair and getting older! I want long hair like that when I am older.

See, I find this style very "of an age:"

Should you cut your hair short when you are 40? 50? 60? 70? .....

But this is ageless

Should you cut your hair short when you are 40? 50? 60? 70? .....

The 2nd one is beautiful if you have the face Agree a completely different look

noddyholder · 08/07/2014 16:20

Quirky me too!

YellowStripe · 08/07/2014 16:21

I've just recently gone short at 47 - hot flushes and night sweats with thick, thick hair are not a good combination. I think you do what you want to! Maybe I'm trying to ward off men too !

specialsubject · 08/07/2014 16:27

no memo issued as far as I'm aware.

50 next year and growing mine, having discovered miracle hair straightening, and getting compliments.

do what you want and what suits!

quirkychick · 08/07/2014 16:30

Absolutely!

Saw a woman in a cafe today with shoulder length silver hair. She looked fab, make up was very natural, hair very silver, thick and in good condition. Slightly tanned and wearing a lovely, bright blue dress. She looked quite young and chic.

r2d2ismyidealman · 08/07/2014 16:31

I've always had long hair except for a two year period when I tried to have a pixie. I imagine I will have long hair until I can no longer to the blow dry and hot roller routine.

flipchart · 08/07/2014 16:32

I'm 49 and my hair is past my shoulders. I have it cut and styled every 6/8 weeks to keep it on trend. Nif I leave it much longer than this it goes tatty and very ageing, like I've let my self go.

defineme · 08/07/2014 16:33

My dm is 67. She has shoulder length and if it's down it honestly seems to age her. Her face seems to need the lift that putting it up gives-she has it in a really elegant low roll over half a doughnut thing.

FFSFFS · 08/07/2014 16:50

I think short hair often looks nice on older people but it really depends on your face, your hair, your hair colour and how you wear it..... In other words it's impossible to say. Smile

My hair is short and I'm 45

kaykayblue · 08/07/2014 16:53

I think longer hair on older ladies looks fabulous. You just have to avoid it getting too long as it can look very witchy as it starts thinning out (which is normal with age).

Very short hair on older women is quite old fashioned I think, but it's really a personal choice.

I've noticed many women tend to cut off long locks when they have kids, which I assume is a convenience thing. I'm going to try and avoid doing that as it seems almost stereotypical - although I'm sure that everyone says exactly the same thing to themselves before having kids! :D

LoveVintage · 08/07/2014 17:23

I am 50 and currently have short hair which I hope to God looks funky and not mummsie! I had it cut short a couple of years ago just as I fancied a change. Everyone told me it took years off me, and I do think I suit it. That would stop me growing it long again though, whatever my age.

cheminotte · 08/07/2014 17:39

Am not yet 40 and like a pp had a short hair as a child then rebelled by growing it as a teen and have had long ever since. I've never really understood the short hair is more practical argument. I get mine cut about every 6 months not 4-6 weeks and can just have it in ponytail most of the time. No styling required really.

GenericDietCola · 08/07/2014 20:45

I agree, people should do what suits them and what they are happy with.

I'm rather looking forward to being about 80 with long, silver hair in a plait.
