What is a reasonable wardrobe of clothes for a child IYO?

As the sales are on, I'm trying to get next year's clothes for my 2yo dd and 3 month old b/g twins. I've been trying to crack getting the right amount of clothes for dd1, and I haven't managed yet. She has way too many clothes at the mo, all bought in the sales. I didn't keep track on what I was getting.

I've been much more restrained this sales season, but I would like some advice on what amount/variety of clothes make a reasonable wardrobe?

This is what I think at the moment:

4 x tshirts
4 x long sleeve tops (plus 2/3 dresses)
2 x jumpers
1/2 cardis or hooded tops
1 x jeans
2 x leggings/trackie bottoms
2 x PJs
5 x vests/knickers
5 x socks

Does this sound about right? Too much/not enough?

Mine have way more than that Grin. I would say they have double what you have there.

But they probably do have too many clothes.
I would definitely want more underwear than that though; DD is 3 and has at least 20 pairs of knickers.

MrsPresley · 07/07/2014 12:59

I would definitely go for more pants, just in case of accidents.

When mine were small I always went for 1 outfit per day, plus maybe 2 spare. You never know what will happen or when the washing machine will break down as I know from bitter experience

MrsPresley · 07/07/2014 13:01

Oh and I would put worry about having too much for your oldest DD, they can be kept for the youngest Smile

Missunreasonable · 07/07/2014 13:02

I would go for more than 5 pairs of knickers and socks. I always make sure the kids have at least a dozen pairs of underwear and a dozen pairs of socks. Washing machines eat socks and send them to the land of odd socks.

Winter or summer clothes?
We wouldn't survie on that number pf clothes, but then I don't have a tumbler drier, and probably only wash every other day during the week (sheets, towels, and extra clothes etc at the weekend).
But then I have 2 muck magnets, who are unreliable at potty training, and so we have one set of clothes permantly in the rucksac for when we go out, and another set of clothes in the nursery bags. You only have 3 bottoms on your list?
Tights to go with the dresses?
We still go through a pair of PJ's a night (eat breakfast and bursh teeth in them), so i suspect the fact you think yuo only need 2 means your DD is much cleaner than my monkeys!

If you think you will potty train in these clothes, double the pants and bottoms.

Bodeccia · 07/07/2014 13:07

That's exactly what I was going to do, dd1's clothes will be dd2's :)
Dd1 does have way more than that, which is why I was asking. There are loads she doesn't wear :-/ I hate that feeling of waste.
YY to the knickers. I have way more than that in fact.

Forgot to add:
1 winter coat
1 light coat
1 rain suit
1 swim suit

YY to tights, forgot them
More bottoms then, addicted ? I'm starting potty training when summer hols start, I might be due for reality check then :) I'm buying for next summer, she might be ok by then? (aah, happy ignorance) I have about 5/6 leggings we never get round to putting on her, that's why I've put so few bottoms.

Really interesting to hear what you guys go through, sounds like I need to increase...

Yy to loads of knickers & bottoms! Sorry to say it, but my dd1 was 4 in March, and we only really got her poo trained at the end of last year, and she still has occasional accidents (wet & soiled). I never leave the house without 3 spare pairs of knickers for her & spare bottoms too. You can get good value packs of knickers in the supermarkets anyway, I like Sainsbury's ones.

duchesse · 07/07/2014 13:53

Definitely more pants. Also more pyjamas is she's night-time potty training. And more socks or you'll spend your life tracking down individual socks.

For coordination purposes you might need more jumpers unless you've been really good about getting things that go together.

ChickenFajitasAndNachos · 07/07/2014 13:58

I think perhaps another bottom half such as leggings and some more undies.

addictedtosugar · 07/07/2014 20:18

Why not look through the wardrobe, count how many of everything you wear regularly, and then have one or 2 extra outfits?

Were not managing on 5 pairs of shorts (trousers as the emergencies), and are resorting to trousers some days - so I'd say min 6 bottoms, plus whatever spares you normally have.

Bodeccia · 07/07/2014 21:30

That's a good plan addicted, I'll go through her wardrobe and see what we actually use. We were given a whole bunch of 2nd hand clothes from a friend, it may be that we're using all the clothes I've bought and the ones we aren't using are the ones we were given.

I'm really not great at getting things that coordinate, I'll get another couple of jumpers. Of course, there is the potential issue of dd1 developing her own taste by next year and not actually wanting to wear the clothes that I've got her!

I've just got another 4 pairs of leggings, I figure you can't have too many of them, and they don't take up too much room as a spare outfit.

Thanks for the advice ladies :)

I have nearly 2 year old twins. Between them they have...

14 vests
10 leggings
2 jeans
8 dresses
2 dungarees
6 pinafores
2 cardigans
2 jumpers
2 coats
14 pairs of socks
10 pajamas
2 raincoats
10 t shirts
12 long sleeved shirts
8 tights

It is enough for them, I do one load of their washing a week.

Hth

bronya · 07/07/2014 21:34

A complete change of clothes for each day of the week seems to be about right for my 2yo. Obviously I wash more often than that, but with spare clothes etc, it works.

RoganJosh · 07/07/2014 21:37

For winter we need more cardigans. Probably four. Plus more leggings/trousers and I agree with more underwear too.
