With summer holidays nearly upon us, and as I am sick of shaving, I have decided to try a bikini wax for the first time but don't understand the "menu". There seems to be so many types it's very confusing.

Which type do you normally go for and which bits of hair do they take off?

I just want to feel "tidy but not necessarily sure I want to remove all the hair?

Hollywood - everything off, so on the front, underneath and round the bum.

Brazillian - as above but with a triangle or landing strip (narrower and they should ask you which you want) left on the front.

And have it done with hot wax, not strip wax - the pain of the latter had me stuck on the ceiling. Hot wax and I barely flinch.

Dancingwiththedrummer · 06/07/2014 19:04

Don't be shy and ask what each treatment involves. Some beauticians have different ideas of how far they will take hair off and in sure they've heard every question before. Go for a hot wax as mentioned above on bikini and underarms and ask what kind of wax they use, always go for a good brand of wax, Perron rigot being the best IMO as it 'shrink wraps' the hair making it less painful. Once you've been you'll be fine everytime

Thanks for the advice. From what I have seen and read would I be right in thinking that either the Brazilian or the Hollywood seem to be the norm these days?

Or you could opt for a 'high bikini' - leaving a more natural triangle shape... but ensuring no rogue hairs on show in a swimsuit!

PastaandCheese · 11/07/2014 06:42

I agree with mumma. I like an 'extended bikini' which is between 'a little off the sides' and brazillian.

WildBillfemale · 11/07/2014 07:24

I've never been waxed down below - contemplating it - what exactly should I expect - I'm guessing gone are the days of moving paper pants from side to side, you are naked with legs akimbo yes? Is it embarassing?

Only1scoop · 11/07/2014 07:26

I get mine done in salon have done for years it's neat and tidy. I never have the underneath done though Confused

Only1scoop · 11/07/2014 07:27

Wear brief pair of pants I'd never go pant less Blush

Anotheronesoon · 11/07/2014 07:31

Pants off- they have seen it before- all day and everyday, oh and well worth getting "the undercarriage " done - ie Brazilian at least - once done you'll be hooked- but definitely ask for hot wax! Good luck!

sonlypuppyfat · 11/07/2014 07:34

Madness absolute madness.

HappyHippyChick · 11/07/2014 07:35

Another embarrassing question. Mine is currently a full, untamed bush due to pregnancy. Should I trim it before I go? Or just leave it?

Only1scoop · 11/07/2014 07:36

Trim for sure

HappyHippyChick · 11/07/2014 07:36

That's what I thought!

Bunbaker · 11/07/2014 07:37

"Thanks for the advice. From what I have seen and read would I be right in thinking that either the Brazilian or the Hollywood seem to be the norm these days?"

No it isn't.

Happy Just do what you like. Midwives have seen everything from plucked chicken to gorilla.

carrie74 · 11/07/2014 07:55

I've been having mine done for years, and have NEVER had a Brazillian or Hollywood. Just a tidy up, moving pants from side to side,,enough to wear a swimming costume: that's all I need or want.

Only1scoop · 11/07/2014 07:59

According to my beauty therapist the H and B are out again now....not literally I hope Blush

SinglePringle · 11/07/2014 08:18

No knickers if all coming off. And your therapist absolutely gets gynecological in there. She'll possibly use a wipe, followed by talc (very light - helps the wax to stick) and then will apply wax.

Legs akimbo - she has seen it all before.

AuntieStella · 11/07/2014 08:36

"Another embarrassing question. Mine is currently a full, untamed bush due to pregnancy. Should I trim it before I go? Or just leave it?"

Before you go where? If you mean to the salon for waxing (once undercarriage has returned to normal after pg and childbirth) follow advice from Only1scoop

But if you are still pg and mean going to medical appointments, just leave it as Bunbaker says.

nyldn · 11/07/2014 08:44

Seeing the "betweeny" on alot of menus... in between a high bikini and a brazilian?

Currently full term and planning on getting a wax this weekend before delivery. Are they unhappy doing that? should I cancel it? Don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, but was hoping to have it done...

HappyHippyChick · 11/07/2014 08:57

Sorry I wasn't clear, I have had the baby and am debating whether or not to a) attempt a wax and b) if I should trim, so bunbakers advice it is!

Only1scoop · 11/07/2014 09:00

I wouldn't turn up for a wax with a 70s style bush. They will have to trim prior to waxing....

AuntieStella · 11/07/2014 09:51

If it's not too embarrassing, HappyHippyChick, then I suggest you ask the salon. Tell them you are fully au naturel and ask if you should trim (and to what length) or if they would prefer to strim it themselves.

And, nyldn, I wouldn't get a wax at full term. Sore follicles and delivery don't mix well (and can even be a route to infection via microabrasions). If you're a regular waxer, getting it done in PG shouldn't be a problem per se. But as you can react differently when heavily PG, I think at term is too late.

emily19802 · 15/08/2014 13:20

Once you start waxing how often do you need to have it done?
