holiday clothes and varicose veins

Hi there. Just wanted some opinions please.

I have very bad v.veins on my one leg an and foot. Some bumpy but basically the whole leg is covered in . unsightly veins. My foot looks like an eighty yr olds.
Not painful, just hideous. Ive had surgery x 2. Improved that area but then another area develops.

I never wear dresses or skirts without tights or I wear maxi dresses. Now when I go on holiday I normally dont care and wear pretty short summer dresses at night as if my legs are just fine. However, now im looking at myself thinking what a state.im thinking that maybe I should cover up a bit. It sounds daft but its like im showcasing them! Im generally very slim and slim legs etc but my leg is vv obvious.

Has anyone out there got hideous legs and what do you do? I I know those with normal legs will say who cares. Its easy to say when its not you.

I too have hideous legs, lumps and bumps and veins, and odd feet as well. I wear what I like, what suits my bodyshape, and mostly what's comfy. yes people might look at me a bit funny, but I don't know them, they don't know me, and especially when on holiday will never have to see them again in my life. and when in doubt I just stare straight at them and smile

Chocamochalatte · 06/07/2014 10:01

Well, I also have hideous varicose veins on one leg, too high risk to fix, tried foam and END but didn't work, my varicose veins go from my feet to my pelvis area, my leg is also over one inch bigger than the other, swells up during the day and hurts often. I have venous insufficiency and PTS, I never wear swimsuits so therefore do not go swimming, never wear shorts, maxi dresses or skirts only, so I feel your pain.. I am 37 and have been like this for years after multiple DVTs.

Have no idea what the solution is or even if there is any.

Sally Hansen for legs is good for discolouration but obvs doesn't hide the 'bumps'

Sorry to be so negative :(

Hopefully · 06/07/2014 10:01

Mine aren't covered, but the back of one leg is a complete state. I spent one year covering it up and flapping about it, then had a stern word won't myself and asked how much time I spend examining the backs of other women's legs. Now I flaunt my manky veiny leg for the world to see!

turkishly · 06/07/2014 10:03

Yes I normally dont care less on hol as I dont know the people and will never see them again! Lately though im beginning to feel extra self conscious. Short summer dresses suit me tevhnically as im slim but I kind of feel like an old granny dreaaing young. It sounds awful but you wouldnt see a 90yr old on holiday with vv's and a mini dress! Although im only early 40's, my leg doesn't match the rest of me.

Choc, im sorry! You sound worse than me:(
I do wear fake tan and ive been using sally hanson lately to disguise my foot in flip flops. It definitely looks less vivid with that but a faff doing it every day instead of just slipping into sandals like everyone else.

hopefully the backs of my legs are ok. Its the front, down the shin and the outside of it. Inner leg ok. Its.like a big network of discolouration then a bumpy foot.

My legs sound very similar to yours, 2 operations over the past 15 years but still as bad, if not worse than before! I only wear short dresses in Winter when I can wear thick opaque tights, in summer I wear maxi dresses or trousers.
However over the past couple of years I have decided that when on holiday and nobody knows me I will wear short dresses. There are always other people around who look worse than me (obviously there are always people who look 100 times better than me also). I figure people will just take one look and think I have crap legs but my dress is nice! Go for it you feel much more comfortable if the weather is very hot. I am also size 8-10, slimish! And aged 45.
Hope this helps.

turkishly · 06/07/2014 12:04

Lovecyprus. I sound same as you. Similar age and dress size. Guess im mithering over nothing.

I agree always someone look s worse than you!

Sometimes though I read of people worrying about baring their bodiea due to being overweight and cellulite but I sometimes wish I was fat! No one bats an eyelid really if someone is flabby. Most people are are big overweight. The thing is I very rarely see women with legs like mine who are my age. Its much more unusual. Yes, I see a lit with the odd vein of course, but not a total gammy leg. Its definitely more embarrassing that having a bit of flab.

I've got horrid VVs & wear what I like. I honestly don't think people notice and if they do so what? I bet some of those people on the beach who weigh more than they would like would happily swap.

Hopefully · 06/07/2014 15:07

I really do think everyone is so preoccupied with their own image that they don't notice other people's flaws. And if I ever do notice, the most I might think is a mild 'oh, VVs are such a PITA' or similar, and carry on with my day without another thought.

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 06/07/2014 17:41

VV and one swollen leg after DVT x2. I don't give a hoot. I get a spray tan before going abroad and wear what I like.

I normally sport a moon tan. I'm talking myself out of being bothered about that.

Look around you. There will be legs with stretch marks, spider veins, etc.

ThermoLobster · 06/07/2014 17:46

Choca sounds like we have similar issues. I recently discovered swim leggings and have started swimming again for the first time in years. I always wear trousers but the leggings gave me enough confidence to take the plunge, literally!

andsmile · 06/07/2014 17:54

Hi, holiday are funny arent they we can be freer there than at home.

I have a VV in one leg its gradually getting more prominent but not that bad. I have some weird purple blotches that have worsened.

I think hopefully is right I try to make the best of what I have (weight loss aside). I think if you have made an overall effort with your appearance you can look smart, stylish and confident - even if you have an obvious imperfection AND WE ALL DO!

I think your problem is with yourself in how you think others are pecveving you. I have struggled with this. I recently read this article that has helped me. I still remind myself of this a lot at the moment.

  1. try to get your head around the article
  2. use some fake tan
  3. maximise the rest of your assets
  4. walk tall and proud and be in the moment

You have a knobbly blue/purple leg. its lucky to be part of a gorgeous person stylishly dressed body.

You define who you are, not other peoples perceptions of who you are.

Try a spray tan.

Such a shame that this worries you so.

turkishly · 06/07/2014 22:03

Thanks everyone for positive comments, particularly andsmile. I do.make a huge effort with my appearance and am very girlie. However maybe I think this adds to the oddness..as I look even stranger!

I understand everyone has imperfections, buy im not not talking about a couple of sticky out veins, a bit of cellulite or being a couple of stine overweight. I look seriously strange and I have never ever seen a woman of my age with a leg like mine! Its so unusual.

Yes ive seen veins and spiderveins but I have neber seen anyone expose a leg like mine unless they were a pensioner!

No one notices, they really don't. I have an arm that doesn't work, massive scars on it, one of which is 6" long and lurid, and my fingers are permanently bent over. If its warm, I don't cover up - and someone at work I had spent over a week with hadn't noticed at all. I was a bit eye rolly, and then recalled the time I failed to notice for 4 days that my client had a prosthetic arm.
