3/4 length trousers and converse?

Is this ever a good look?

DH has just bought some 3/4 length trousers because he thinks shorts are too informal for work. His sandals are also too casual ridiculous so he has bought some converse. I have just offended him by suggesting that boat shoes might be a better option to wear to work. He works in a lab so does not need to be overly-smart, usually wears jeans, t-shirt (with or without collar), but I really think this might be too casual.

He is 40, says he needed something other than sandals to wear and the only things he knows are converse as he had a pair when he was younger. I am possibly biased, I am not at all fashionable and have never seen the attraction of converse and was not sufficiently enthusiastic. I have said he shouldn't send them back because of what I think and to keep them for the weekend but he said he doesn't want too many pairs of shoes lying around (?!?!).

Is this something acceptable to wear? What can I suggest that he could wear instead?

I would have thought that three quarter length trousers would be equally unsuitable for work.

The men I work with wear chino type trousers in various colours such as navy or that very dark pink colour with a polo shirt or coloured shirt. We work for a charity.

I can't imagine three quarter length trousers ever being a good look, sorry.

PrincessOfChina · 05/07/2014 08:01

It really depends on the type of trouser IMO. Are they jeans? Or chinos? I think Converse could be ok with either but you're right, they're not usual work wear. But I'd call those trousers more ankle grazers?

I think the only 3/4 trousers I've seen on blokes have been those good awful track suit bottoms. If he's bought those then divorce is probably the only answer.

PrincessOfChina · 05/07/2014 08:02

God awful. Not good awful.

Greengardenpixie · 05/07/2014 08:08

Maybe posting a similar picture might be helpful?

Chumhum · 05/07/2014 08:18

Oh good lord not deck shoes and chinos, that really is a ghastly look. 3/4 trousers could work it depends on the length and his shape, converse a million times better than dick shoes.

fruitpastille · 05/07/2014 08:20

Converse are great with jeans but not sure about them with 3 quarter length trousers! My dh wears shorts (ones that come to knee, not any shorter) with a linen shirt and birkehstock sandals for work. He really doesn't care about clothes or what anyone thinks though.

TheToiletThief · 05/07/2014 08:28

He's gone out and I didn't manage to get a picture!

I have no idea what chino means, sorry (should I be Blush ?)

He has bought these www.zalando.ch/camel-active-shorts-navy-ca522f04d-k11.html

the only sandals he has at the moment are teva ones like these

He is currently wearing them with a normal t-shirt and I think it looks um, not like a good look. Might be ok with a collar (polo) shirt.

I suspect fruitpastille that he changes into birkenstocks when he is there if no one important is around. He won't wear a proper shirt, unless he has to, if he needs to look a bit smarted he wears a polo shirt.

My dh wears black jeans a tee and walking boots to work. It depends upon his environment. I think he looks fine by what you've said. He will know what is ok. If he works in a lab is it at a uni?

mysteryfairy · 05/07/2014 08:45

Are they high or low top converse. I think low would be fine given its a casual workplace but can't imagine high would look good.

TheToiletThief · 05/07/2014 09:02

low ones. It's not a uni lab, it's in industry.

mysteryfairy · 05/07/2014 12:21

Sounds as if it would look fine to me then. Not appropriate for every work place but presumably he knows if it's ok for his so doesn't really matter what goes elsewhere.

SaidFlorence · 05/07/2014 12:25

Sounds fine. Open toe sandals usually aren't allowed in labs. Converse are ideal.

leadrightfoot · 05/07/2014 20:36

Lab no open toes Also should be full length sleeves and legs really
Most lab peeps I know wear a shirt
However uni labs don't really work by accept such rules
So sounds fine and tbh unless he has a meeting with others wearing shirt them

Skinheadmermaid · 06/07/2014 09:29

Isn't it dangerous to wear open shoes in a lab?
I think converse if they are dark blue or black look way better then sandals as long as they're low top which i'm assuming they are...

burnishedsilver · 06/07/2014 12:09

Keep the converse. Lose the trousers.

fluffydoge · 06/07/2014 12:20

3/4 length trousers are never a good look. Buy him some chinos or other long trousers. Converse are fine.

Fairylea · 06/07/2014 13:03

I actually think it's fine. I was going to say no but having seen the actual trousers (which I think are more like casual board shorts) and given its obviously a casual ish environment I think it's absolutely fine. Fashionable in fact.

I think he'd look more hideous and older in chinos and boat shoes... ghastly. Sorry.

Fairylea · 06/07/2014 13:05

Also Teva sandals are very fashionable at the moment. Not suitable for work obviously but they are one of the best sellers at both schuh and asos right now and popular amongst bloggers so they can't all be wrong :)
