Would you pay £17 for a cleanser?

My favourite cleanser is Clinique comforting cream one but its £17 per tube, it is rich and lasts a while but I don't know if I can justify the cost. I am using a sample of Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish at the moment at that seems fine and I've had compliments on my skin but I still prefer the Clinique. Is £17 too extravagant.

I used to, but can't afford it anymore. I've just started using the Avene really gentle wipe off one and it is lovely - £8 I think.

callamia · 04/07/2014 18:51

Spend what you like.
I've just discovered that using my baby's coconut oil is brilliant as a cleanser, but I will spend money on serums. If you can afford it, and you like it, then don't feel bad about it.

LadySybilLikesCake · 04/07/2014 18:51

It depends. If you bought one for £5, would it last three times as long?

I bought a Chanel moisturiser a couple of years ago and it lasted a year and was used twice a day, so probably worked out cheaper than if I'd have bought something for less but needed replacing more often.

seasalt50 · 04/07/2014 19:52

If you use it, like it and want to repeat purchase I'd say you've found your holy grail cleanser! Most of us are still searching so use it and enjoy (as long as it's within YOUR budget)

I once succumbed to an Emma Hardie cleanser for nearly £50 and it wasn't that good - I got sucked in by the hype. Now I use Alpha H Balancing cleanser which is £30+ for 500ml and I repeat purchase again and again.

chipsandpeas · 04/07/2014 19:57

i would i love clinique take the day off cleansing balm and i think its about 21 quid
altho i use it to take off makeup then use another cleanser as well in order to make it last

MotherBluestocking · 04/07/2014 23:51

In the world of cleansers, £17 is not a ridiculous splurge. If you are on a tight budget, is there something you care about less that you could do without to make yourself feel you'd 'earned' the cleanser?

goodasitgets · 05/07/2014 00:04

I have a selection Blush
Basically a mix so I can use the more expensive ones every other day and cheaper ones in between
If you like the clarins one, good things manuka honey cleanser is cheap and has a similar feel

Greengardenpixie · 05/07/2014 00:07

If money was no object then yes. With other expenses no. Cleansers are not on your skin long enough. I would spend the money on good creams to be honest.

goodasitgets · 05/07/2014 00:08

This is my most expensive at £21 for 50g. If I won the lottery I would only use this, the smell is incredible!!

Cheapest is the good things one I mentioned - I paid £2.99 for it in TK Maxx (150ml)

peasandlove · 05/07/2014 00:26

yes I would. I'd also spend 2 quid. If you can afford it, it's not that much. I have a clarins cleanser that just goes on forever as you only use such a small amount each time.

Only1scoop · 05/07/2014 00:34

I use the same cleanser as yourself. I use the toner also. If you google it's constantly on offer. I've just bought the set in box with free make up bag and mask for 22 pounds from boots.

Last one I bought was 18 pounds online.

pussinboots61 · 05/07/2014 21:29

Thanks for your replies. Only1scoop, I have tried Googling the cleanser before but its only come up with the same price as in the shops, even on Amazon. The cleanser isn't the only Clinique item I like though, I do like the foundation and the lipstick which are also expensive, I like the quickliner too but can find that half the price on Amazon, the other items are always full price online, some of the lipsticks are cheaper on Ebay but usually not my shade. I use a cheaper moisturiser but just love this cleanser.

C&P isn't much cheaper though, is it? I recon if it works, and you can afford then no it's not extortionate. Buy cheap buy twice.

Though I have found using dirt cheap aqueous cream in place of C&P (using with the HCC method) works just as well.

MrsDavidBowie · 06/07/2014 07:04

I buy big salon sized dispensers of Dermalogica o line for about £43...usually buy 4 a year.
So about £14 a month for cleanser... That's 5 coffees or 2 bottles of wine.
Well worth it.

WildBillfemale · 06/07/2014 09:31

I do spend this or more.
I do try and find a cheaper alternative now and then but after trying a few and notching up a total spend of pretty much what I would have spent anyway I just buy the pricey one I really want in the first place.
If you've found something that suits your skin then stick with it.

Try some of the beauty online sellers based in the channel islands, they sell branded names much cheaper. I've been using 'Cheapsmells' for years, it's now called something else but search the above name and it will still take you to the website.

AntoinetteCosway · 06/07/2014 09:33

Liz Earle's Cleanse and Polish is a similar price if not a bit more I think. I switched from that to Burt's Bees sensitive cream cleanser and it's absolutely brilliant. Best one I've ever used and under a tenner. Am delighted with it!

AntoinetteCosway · 06/07/2014 09:35

200

Deverethemuzzler · 06/07/2014 09:36

I don't think you should feel guilty if you can afford it.
I agree with PP who prefer to pay more for moisturisers and less for cleansers.

A £3 cleanser does the job just as well if you use it properly.

I get clarins day and night cream twice a year (birthday and christmas). If our income drops I will forgo it but I will miss it.
It won't be the end of the world but it works for me. So if you like what you are using, you can afford it, buy it and don't worry about it.

AntoinetteCosway · 06/07/2014 09:37

Oops. 200ml Cleanse and Polish is £24.75 and the Clinique is £17 for 150ml.

PeoplesFrontOfJudea · 06/07/2014 09:38

Yes, I use the take the day off balm by clinique, it's around £20.

I will continue to spend on it because I have v fussy, spot prone skin which breaks out with most things. TTDO balm is the only cleanser that gets make up off my skin (inc waterproof mascara) but is still gentle enough and non scented for my fussy skin. I've tried things like jojoba oil, almond oil & coconut as cheaper, more natural alternatives, but they all break me out. I think because they don't rinse off properly, even with a cloth. The residue blocks my pores and irritates my skin.

pussinboots61 · 06/07/2014 21:07

The Burts Bees cleanser sounds good, I might look into that also. I noticed at the Clinique counter in Boots today there wasn't the comforting cream one there and it wasn't mentioned in the price list, hope its not been discontinued.

Where do you get them from MrsDavidBowie ? I had a huge 900ml salon size dermalogica I got for about 40 quid but today when I looked on Amazon I could only find one for 80 pounds and I begrudge paying so much.

NancyFancyPants · 06/07/2014 22:19

I used to use the same cleanser as you OP but now I use Aqueous cream as a cleanser! My skin has never looked better and my purse appreciated the change too Grin

Framboisier · 06/07/2014 22:20

Yes I would

But if you don't already do double cleansing, you could try a first cleanse with something cheaper (body shop do a chamomile oil iirc, or I use una Brennan vit c, which is often on offer at about £7 in boots)
Then you would use less of your expensive cleanser on your second wash.

Cuteypatootey · 06/07/2014 22:57

Buy the big size clarins online. I got it for 20 quid from debenhams, it's huge and lasts for ages. Google around. I also buy clarins products for 50 % cheaper on eBay - just make sure it's sealed.
