when using them. I have just bought myself a set and am not that great at putting them in but with the help of you tube, im getting the hang of it. I had to invest in pins rather than the clips as they were basically crap. Mouse before? Hairspray before? My hair is fine and doesnt hold well. Thanks!

Old fashioned setting lotion is great, and cheap. You can still get it from Boots or most chemists.

She's right. That's stuff you used to see in hair salons in little pink or lilac tubes.

Squirt a bit on damp hair, roll up and wait.

thank you! :)

I put my heated rollers in dry hair, but the curl doesn't last. So I should have been using setting lotion, and using them on damp hair..?

almondcakes · 03/07/2014 22:46

I've always used them on dry hair too. Can you put the setting lotion on dry hair?

Greengardenpixie · 03/07/2014 22:50

Thats a good point actually. I hadnt thought of that. Do you put it on dry hair because you use the heated rollers on dry hair, not wet.

I don't think you should be using setting lotion on heated rollers - it will damage the rollers. Normally people use setting lotion on foam rollers which obviously just soak up any excess, and prevent it from simply leaking onto the scalp (as with plastic rollers with the holes in).

You should use the heated ones on DRY hair, otherwise you might see steam coming off your head! Plus it's not very good for your hair.

Make sure you use a heat protection spray before you put the rollers in to prevent damage.

On getting the curls to stay longer...it will partly depend on your hair type and length. If it's very long, then the weight of the hair is going to drag the curl down quite quickly unless you have some sort of (even very slight) natural wave already. You can use a bit of mousse in your hair before you begin if you like, and put some hair spray on afterwards, but if your hair really really wants to be straight, then it will still drop relatively quickly, sorry! If your hair is shorter then you might have more luck.

The best advice I can give is to make sure that you are leaving the rollers in for long enough. Make sure they are absolutely stone cold before taking them out, as it's the heat that is supposed to "set" them. Some of the youtube ladies leave them in for just 15-20 minutes, but if you have quite fine hair then I would leave them in for much longer than that - something like 30 minutes to an hour.

By the way, what heated rollers did you go for? I'll be looking for a set for next summer when my hair has grown back!

well I bought the babyliss ceramic ones but the clips are crap so bought metal ones to hold tighter. if I had the money I would have bought enrapture ones. I have enrapture totum styler snd the wave one snd they are both fantastic.

Can you spray hairspray before you take them out or will that ruin the rollers?
