Children's Suntan Lotion

AvonCallingBarksdale · 03/07/2014 16:44

Hello. Not sure if this is the right topic, but here I go anyway. Poor DD has very, very sensitive skin and comes out in a rash/eczema if we use "normal" suntan lotions. Does anyone have any recommendations for an organic, hypoallergenic SPF50 children's suntan lotion? Rather exact specifications, I know Smile
TIA

Not childrens as such but you might consider trying one of the Clinique ones.

codandchipstwice · 03/07/2014 18:22

we have a lavera sensitive spray that is good, and also got on well with green people

cardamomginger · 03/07/2014 20:47

Have you tried Sunsence Toddler Milk? DD's dermatologist recommended it for her.

whereisshe · 03/07/2014 21:59

Have you tried badger balm? That's what we use on dd as I've seen it recommended for sensitive skin (and I'm allergic to everything so assume she's prone).

AvonCallingBarksdale · 03/07/2014 22:22

Ah, great, thanks for the suggestions. She loves being out and about in teh sun, but stuff like Nivea Kids, or any "mainstream" lotions just irritate her skin, so thank you.

I've had a similar problem with DD and La Roche Posay was the answer for us. Hypoallergenic and amazing SPF!

browneyesblue · 03/07/2014 22:47

Although it's not organic, we have had great success with Bepanthen Baby Sun Cream, which is 50+ SPF.

With sun cream (as with many things), it really depends on what the ingredient(s) is that she reacts to.

Bepanthan is free from parabens, colour, fragrance and preservatives. If your DD is allergic to a specific chemical in sunscreens, you should look for a suncreen with a mineral (physical) barrier - titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide, rather than a chemical barrier (which is absorbed). These sit on the surface of the skin, rather that chemical suncreens which are absorbed, so do not react. I'm pretty sure that Green People do mineral sunscreens.

browneyesblue, that's really useful info, thanks Smile We used to use Bepanthen nappy rash cream when she was a baby, and that was great.

Agree that sunsense is good. Poor DD has very sensitive skin and it is the only one that doesn't give her streaming red eyes when used on her face. Expensive but very good and not as sticky as other brands.

WaitMonkey · 04/07/2014 11:14

I'd third, SunSence. Worked brilliantly for dd2 who has very sensitive skin. You can get it from Amazon.

Sunsense is good. Also Ultrasun family has worked well for us - you only have to apply once a day as well (just as well given the price....)

MrsRogerSterling · 04/07/2014 14:38

Ultrasun, I use it on all of us and we no longer get sun related rashes. Don't think it is organic though but very good and you only apply once a day (and it works).

Alphabetsy · 04/07/2014 22:04

Boots Soltan children's doesn't irritate my DD when others such as Nivea does. It was recommended by our childminder who has not had a problem with it on any of her sensitive mindees.

RogueV · 04/07/2014 22:05

Green people suncream

Seriously it's amazing

Scotslasslivinginfrance · 04/07/2014 22:07

Another vote for green people pretty sure it was developed by a mum for their child with eczema.
But it's ace stuff.

threepiecesuite · 04/07/2014 22:10

My dd has eczema and we've tried lots but got on best with Banana Boat Kids and Sudacrem spf50 spray (available from Superdrug).

GobblersKnob · 04/07/2014 22:11

Green people one here too, though we all just use the adults one.

Ds had started reacting to lots of sun creams, but this one doesn't affect him at all.

CockBollocks · 04/07/2014 22:18

Its trial and error i'm afraid - we tried so many. Proderm/sun mousse (expensive), Bepanthan, banana boat, sudacreme etc and tbh DD flared up to varying degrees with all of them.

Then last year we found boots

Worked really well, she still flared up a little with heavy use but so much better than others we tried.

My tip is to exhaust the cheaper ones first, then move on to the expensive!!! looks at cupboard stacked with creams

Justgotosleepnow · 04/07/2014 22:35

Another green people recommendation from me.
I have ezxema (sp?) and psoriasis and it actually improves my skin as it's so nourishing.

Also my 14m old DD got nasty spots from Nivea her gran used. No problems with green people.

You need to know- suncream is mineral and/or chemical. Mineral sits on the skin (like bare minerals makeup does) and the rays bounce off. but chemical is absorbed into the upper layers of the skin and reacts in the skin.

When I found this out it freaked me out a bit. As I reckoned these suncream chemicals are more than likely man made, 50 years old tops. So no way of knowing the long term damage in the skin.

Plus there's loads of preservatives in suncream, lots of people are becoming sensitive to one particular one methy something.

Can't beat a thin cotton long sleeve top, trousers & hat though.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 04/07/2014 22:38

Thank you! We've tried banana boat, and that's irritated her Sad, just goes to show that it is, indeed, trial and error. Thank you so much for all the tips - will try Green People, that seems to have a lot of recommendations tries not to envy DS who can put anything on his skin and look like glowing healthy, sun kissed child personified!

Lovea

Lavera

Have used both on my eczema suffering dd with good results

AvonCallingBarksdale · 04/07/2014 22:41

And, thanks for the info about chemical/mineral, I wasn't aware of that. She does wear a sunsuit top on holiday, but not practical at school or on hot days here Smile Poor thing, she had hideous molloscum when she was younger, just seems to have vv sensitive skin.

MrsMargoLeadbetter · 04/07/2014 22:45

Ultrasun is good.

Interestingly DS reacted to Nivea top.

Gumps · 04/07/2014 22:49

My dd reacted to all the main brands at the start if the summer. Someone recommended sunsense and she didn't have any flare ups whilst using thus. Then one day I was out and forgot her cream and used boots own brand sol tan baby sensitive. She didn't react to this either and it's great as it's a lot cheaper. Worth a try. They do little travel sized bottles which I used as a tester first.
