Would a salon dye my hair?

My hair is in really bad condition after 20 years of home hair dyes, bleaching it, stripping it, using hair straighteners and using a diffuser. It used to be really thick and now is really really thin, especially on my crown (you can see my scalp I have to style it a certain way so you can't). It breaks off really easily and I usually lose lots of it when I wash it and comb it. It is naturally curly so tends to be quiet dry too.

I used to dye my hair because I wanted to, now I have too. Darn grey roots. I've been dying it a dark red for the past year or so, before that dark brown. So top half of my hair is a darkish red whilst the bottom is more of a dark brown/black. I'd really love to get it the colour in the pic. I can't do that with home dye.

My birthday is coming up in a few weeks so I was thinking of using my birthday money to get it done in the hairdressers. I've never had my hair dyed in the hairdressers before so have no idea if they could actually make my hair lighter? And would they considering the condition of my hair?

Would a salon dye my hair?

quite, not quiet. I'd be really freaked if my hair was loud. Hmm

Ask them when you make the appointment.

Trouble with red is that it fades incredibly quickly. Often need to be bleached first to get the red as bright as the picture (tint doesn't lift tint), and soon knackers the condition. You will probably find someone to do it, but just be realistic about the upkeep, and the already compromised condition of your hair. it won't look like the picture for more than a few washes.

Use Color Oops (www.amazon.com/Color-Remover-Extra-Strength-Application/dp/B0012JY4G4).

Then leave it two weeks, and dye over it with 100% pure natural henna.

Would bleaching at the salon be gentler? When hair thins to reveal the scalp a lighter blonde colour is more forgiving and makes the hair loss look less dramatic. I can't help thinking, even if you can achieve that red, that it may draw more attention to the issue, and be really hard to maintain. Do you use deep conditioning treatments? If not, do so, and if you're still using straighteners embrace your curly locks and STOP!

See if there is a salon near to you - or, if not, further afield if you drive -that specialises in colour. They will give you a free consultation about the most realistic/ best way forward. Check reviews online first for the salon and try to get recommendations from others who've had similar issue and found a great salon.

I think even if they would it would be a mistake, the red would highlight the thin scalp and if the condition is bad it will sink in leaving a horrid pinky red faded colour after a few washes which means you would have to keep redying. You would be better using a gentle semi permanent on roots only and concentrating on getting the condition up to scratch then having the darker ends cut off. try henna wax as a conditioner overnight or coconut oil, pureology shampoo is good too for helping hair look human again. ditch the straightners and embrace your waves, it will look thicker, or be creative tying it back until it improves. good luck.

Can I recommend a wig? Seriously. I lost my hair and had to wear one for a bit. Now even though my hair is back I have a few wigs and hairpieces and find them really fun for a quick change of style.

Thanks for all the tips.

I kind of thought it would do more damage than good TBH, just wishful thinking for the kind of hair I used to have.

I have tried that Colour Oops in the past and it left my hair almost falling out.

I think I'll try the Henna wax and pureology shampoo that StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes recommended and take it from there.

I don't think a reputable salon would. You could probably find one that will, but you're just perpetuating the cycle. Do you want a nice head of hair for your birthday next year, or to be bald? Make your present to yourself be giving your hair a rest and letting it grow back healthy.

missmartha · 03/07/2014 12:09

You could try it. A good hairdresser is usually very helpful and will talk through the options you have.

I have very thin hair, and my hairdresser is great at colouring and styling so that it looks good.

A good hairdresser will be only too pleased to give you the hair you want if possible, but if s/he thinks red would look crap on you, they will say.

Which is a good thing imo. Mine has guided me through my dreams of all sorts f weird and wild hair cuts and colours, all the while saying he will do anything I want ....but....

Off on Monday to get a trim and root job. My hair is in pretty good condition at the moment and I put it down to good, professional care.

pureology is on offer at HQ hair at the moment still a bit spendy but cheaper than usual and you get a free travel set too, for some reason my order came with a free sample bottle of peach iced tea Confused but welcome
