I have been given a very bling ring (not by romantic donor, don?t get excited!)It?s very beautiful, but I?m not sure about it because:

1)I think it?s a bit too bling a) for me, and b) for general use
2) I think it?s a bit wide and thick for my stumpy fingers
3) It looks like something my stepmother would wear ? i.e. trophy wife jewellery.

SO,

Do I just keep wearing it, let it grow on me and risk looking like a flash Harriet?
Do I stash it safely for a rainy day?
Do I get it remodelled? In this case, anyone know how much this costs, and how to go about getting it designed?

Need more details? What kind of stones? One stone or many? Gold, silver or platinum?

Beetle73 · 08/09/2006 15:57

Hang on while I get the ruler out.

OK. About 4mm wide. White gold band with rectangular diamonds inset in a strip along the front.
I don't mind the design - I have another one in a similar design, which I guess is why they chose this one. But the new one is just a bit MORE everything IYSWIM.

you could wear it as a pendant

Earlybird · 08/09/2006 16:08

Dangly earrings with rectangular stones could be rather fab for special occasions....

Beetle73 · 08/09/2006 16:12

I can't help thinking that I could probably get a skinnier ring and a pair of earrings out of it if I had it remodelled.

Second question - what is the form regarding mixing normal gold and white gold? Can you wear different metals on different hands, or should hands, ears, wrist, neck all be the same? Sorry, I'm a jewellery cretin.

mixing is ok imho.

I'd be scared to wear anything valuable as earrings unless v v well secured to my ears (not butterflies).

If the diamonds are v flash, it's prob going to be a bit eye-catching even if you've got fewer of them. I would wear it for a few weeks and see how you feel about it then - you'll probably be head-over-heels in love with it by then .

mrsdarcy · 09/09/2006 12:42

I reckon wear it for a while and see if it grows on you.

If you still want to get it remodelled, we got my grandmother's engagement ring remodelled. We went to a jewellers that supplied to trade (but was also general-public-friendly). Not very helpful, but get recommendations if you can. Whereabouts are you?

CarolinaMoon · 09/09/2006 16:56

how much did it cost you MrsDarcy, if you don't mind my asking?

I've got my gran's engagement ring - it's just a bog-standard solitaire, but the stone's set so high it catches on everything, so I've had to give up wearing it. I'd love to get it reset.

AnelaSunshine · 09/09/2006 17:23

Dh gave me diamond earrings for my wedding present so they have huge sentimental value as well as their actual value.
I would be gutted if I lost them but I don;t believe in saving things "for best" so wear them at least twice a month if not more often. I just put two butterflies on the back tightly and check them at intervals.
What a lovely dilemma to find yourself in Beetle. V jealous.

mrsdarcy · 09/09/2006 19:33

Carolina - it was about 14 years ago so I'm really not sure. It became my engagement ring so DH paid for it! Maybe in the region of £600 but I'm not sure where I got that figure from. We re-set the diamond in a thicker gold band and added emeralds.

Beetle73 · 09/09/2006 20:53

hello, i didn't realise this had come back to life.
Gosh MrsDarcy - that's quite a lot more than I'd want to spend. Think I'll wait for someone to propose to me, then he can pay for it.
Yes Anela, it is a pretty good dilemma. I'm really not complaining, and sorry if people think I'm bragging or boasting, but i know that there are plenty of people on here who enjoy a sparkly issue.

Ooh you are lucky, make sure you come back and tell us what you decide. I would speak to a couple of jewellers before ruling out having it remade, because I have had a new ring made from scratch to my specifications (inc stones and other materials) for less than £200 so it is not necessarily going to cost that much.
