Hello

I have dark blonde hair and have highlighted it in the past but new circumstances now means I can no longer afford it. Thinking about using a home dye kit. Are they ok in your opinion?

I colour my hair myself. I only use schwarzkopf colours as they don't fade.

QueenofClean1 · 29/06/2014 21:02

I use the same as UpUp

Home hair dye completely fucked my hair up so I'm now too scared to do it, but it might have been the dye I used.

My hair is a short bob. Don't even consider home dyes if you hair is long as the DIY kits are stronger than salon formulas. Why not try a local collage for a cut price colour? I've had some really awful experiences with home dye, V10 is the worst and although nice and easy is very good I developed a terrible reaction to it. Do a test patch first.

I have been using home dyes for about 30 years, and don't have any problems with them causing damage. I use various blonde shades and they're fine. I use Nice n Easy, L'Oreal Preference most often, but I'd happily try any of the big brands.

i've been home dying my hair for more than 10 years. when it was still down to my waist i always had to enlist help though. DP was an obvious target or my mum or various friends and flat mates. now i've got a pixie cut it's much easier and i do it myself in about 10 mins.
i think you have to try several brands to find out which colour comes out best/doesn't fade/has the least revolting smell...

Excellent. Think I'll give it a go...what's the worst that can happen? Thank you.

I'm a hairdresser so can help but what colour do you want to achieve?

Greengardenpixie · 30/06/2014 11:07

I use nice and easy natural dark auburn all the time. I use the root touch up inbetween dying to avoid dying it too many times and also hate the mess. I find it works this works for me but it does take trial and error getting a colour you are happy with. Its all about trying to get a colour that suits you.

I use them regularly, be aware that they can come out darker than anticipated so be sure you get the right shade, also start with a semi permanent until you are sure you have the right colour. I used the age defy one from clairol the other day and it left my hair soft and shiney. good luck.

I've been colouring my (shoulder length) hair myself for around 10 years. I've used medium and dark ash blonde shades by Olia, Nice 'n Easy, John Freida, Perfect 10, Herbatint and Naturetint. Generally, I find most dark blonde tones come up too dark. However, I've just used Clairol Age Defy Medium Ash Blonde. The colour is very similar to that shown on the box, extremely natural in tone, and my hair is the cool, dark blonde I wished for. As Step found, the condition is great - soft and silky.

I do hope you find something you are happy with.
