Does anyone else who's had their colours done feel like rebelling sometimes?

I had mine done a few weeks ago and was generally happy with the results, 'my' colours were mainly what I'd wear anyway. But ever since I keep finding myself drawn to things I would never have picked up before eg a yellow top, which are in colours I was specifically told were no good for me. I tried the yellow top on and it was fine, I didn't look I'll or anything and nobody pointed or ran away screaming.

I found the whole colours experience quite useful, if a bit Emperor's New Clothes, but there's a part of me that just doesn't like being told I can or can't wear certain things. Does anyone else find this or am I the only self-sabotaging colour rebel? :)

Yes! I'm an autumn but really like wearing black. I know I look better in other colours, but I feel more comfortable in black maybe because I'm over weight

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2014 09:54

I wear what I'm happy in. Some of the colours I should wear just don't do it for me! Rebel and proudWink

Scarletohello · 28/06/2014 10:46

I hated the initial diagnosis as was told I was an Autumn but lived in black! It felt a real threat to my identity. But, over time, I adapted and ten years later I now gave a fabulous wardrobe of clothes that suit me and match each other. It's worth it in the long run but I do get why you feel like you want to rebel!

Greengardenpixie · 30/06/2014 15:58

I havent had my colours done but i am constantly drawn to colours that just dont suit me like mustard!!! I think the colours would be fine as long as you dont wear them close to your face.

CambridgeBlue · 30/06/2014 17:16

The yellow top was quite high cut so right near my face! But it didn't look awful to me. Despite doing a very creative job for a living I am a bit worried now that I just can't see colours very well!

Not tempted to rebel about colours but I rebel against my style diagnosis from HoC all the time. Ha!

Rainydayblues · 30/06/2014 17:21

Was diagnosed autumn but some of the colours look awful on me...mustard makes me look like an emergency trip to A&E might be needed. I love some of the colours and in general it has given me more courage to stray from black...but brown tights are a bit poo-like and I love my jeans blue - not autumn coloured!

Greengardenpixie · 30/06/2014 17:55

They do say there is a yellow for everyone though. I have sallow skin and mustard or most shades of yellow or greeny yellow are a no no on me. I like black but i wear all colours. I am also a sucker for prints!

MyrtleDove · 30/06/2014 18:01

Yy to there being a yellow for everybody - mustard is awful on me but a fresher, cooler-toned lemon yellow is great.

whereisshe · 30/06/2014 18:04

My HoC consultant told me they were guidelines, not rules, and at least I'd be breaking them in full knowledge of what I was doing! Which I quite like as an approach, particularly given my extensive black wardrobe and my summer HoC diagnosis Sad

Aque1ven · 30/06/2014 18:12

Sometimes yes. I'm a Spring & it can all look a bit CeeBeebies to someone like me who used to virtually live in black & grey.
But I'm adjusting. Luckily I'm a Blue Spring so greys & navy are amongst my best colours & the bright yellow/corals/beige are my least good so that's far more comfortable for me. But some of the loveliest things I own from before are black & I've no plans to chuck them any time soon.

MyrtleDove · 30/06/2014 23:02

where I can imagine that must be a bit of a shock! But Summers at least get softer colours - what about going from black to charcoal/cool taupe/slate blue? I mean it's not like going from wearing lots of black to being a Spring, there is (IMO) less of a jump from black to a soft slate blue.

whereisshe · 01/07/2014 07:07

Myrtle I don't have a conceptual or aesthetic objection to the summer palette, I have a financial objection to replacing my whole wardrobe!

It will have to be phased... But even with no new black things I have some (much-loved) black clothes that I've had for years... It could take a while. Not to mention the difficulty in finding summer grey-blue which is one of my best colours Sad

I'm up to the challenge though!

kaykayblue · 01/07/2014 08:07

As a question, is getting your colours done worth the money?

Did it bring any sort of surprises to you, say in terms of, a colour that you never wear turns out to look amazing on you?

I recently changed my hair colour (back to my natural colour) and I'm beginning to realise that colours I used to love now look a bit...meh on me. But I've been dyeing my hair for so long I now have no idea what colours to go for!

mummybare · 01/07/2014 08:26

It started with workout gear and nightwear and, now I'm 32 weeks pg all bets are off - I'm wearing whatever fits! I'm another autumn with a load of black in my wardrobe. I am a dark/blue autumn though, so in my defence it's not too horrible on me, although I do try to buy new clothes in my colours.

Looking forward to one day having my figure back and making wardrobe investments again!

SicknSpan · 01/07/2014 08:28

kaykayblue I'm a spring and feel most comfortable in the blue green end of it, hated salmons/corals/orange etc. a friend persuaded me to try a coral scarf on thought the other day with my navy and royal blue "uniform" (it's a standing joke that I only ever wear blue!) and I was shocked at how much it suited me! Had never tried anything on in that colour because it reminded me of hyacinth bucket types, but turns out it made my skin look amezzin. Tried a bright pink top as well and same for that. Would never have gone for those before.

mummybare · 01/07/2014 08:47

Oh yes, and kayak, I second what sick says. I would never have worn pink before but there's a shade in the autumn palette that is a sort of warm dusky brownish pink - HoC call it rosewood - and it looks AMAZING with my skintone. I don't see it in shops too often but I get very excited if I do!

It has made me bolder in my outfit choices and colour combinations too.

LeapingOverTheWall · 01/07/2014 08:53

I'm an autumn and before I had my colours done I'd never have dreamed of wearing a bright orange cardigan - it gets me compliments every time I wear it (not so much "that's a nice cardigan", more "you're looking really well" when i've had the Week From Hell and no sleep).

Best thing for me though is I look a bit more polished and pulled together. I can still wear some of my "wrong coloured" favourites, just mix them up with the colours that do suit me more.

QueenCadbury · 01/07/2014 09:31

I love following the rules but I'm aware that makes me sound like a saddo Grin.

I find the black thing interesting as I'm 'allowed' to wear it as a winter but actually I rarely buy it anymore as I can see that navy is so much more flattering on me.

kaykayblue · 01/07/2014 10:05

Thanks ladies, that's really interesting.

Do you find that there are colours technically within your spectrum that you just absolutely don't suit for some reason? I keep finding purple and greens in the spectrums I think I fit into, and they are the worst colours possible on me as they clash badly with my eyes.

I think I will give up trying to "self diagnose" my colouring. My hair is light brown with gold highlights, but looks darker because my skin is so pale. I've got warm undertones in my skin, but my eyes are extremely blue. When I've got even a tiny bit of foundation on to even out my skin tone there's a huge contrast between everything, but when I've got no make up on and my skin is all blotchy, it's a medium contrast.

I think I just clash with myself!

It was quite fun draping random bits of fabric over myself though!
