I'm thinking of getting highlights but I don't know where to start,
What colour etc
I have dark brown hair and am not olive skinned but not pale
I don't want the stripy look just maybe small bits poking through kind of
I've never had blonde before either I was thinking ofaybe a honeyish colour?

You need to pick the colour of highlights at the hairdresser, or else you get what they think is nice.
I did that- big mistake! My hair is a 4 or 5 dark brown. I got 9 colour highlights. Waaaay too pale. I've gone to 8, and in another couple of weeks I'm going to 7.

So figure out what number your base colour is and only go 2 or 3 shades lighter.

Also, unless you want roots and stripy hair I advise you get balayage. This is- your hair has a lovely blow dry then they paint on the bleachy stuff free hand.

But I've never seen hair with foils at regular intervals that doesn't just look like stripy highlights. Balayage can look absolutely beautiful.

Yes the balayage sounds like what I'm looking for
I've googled some pics to take with me
I've never put blonde tones throughout hair ever so I just don't want to end up shell shocked and then hating it!

Wrt to base colour I use box home dyes(to cover greys) can they still figure the right base colour out?
And thank you for the advice Thanks

Yes I'm sure the hairdresser can figure out the base colour no problem. Be clear on what you want, don't let them bully you!
Not all hairdressers can do balayage I think, so you may need to chat to a few.
Good luck!

I'm going to ring around a few and find out
How do you pronounce balayage, it looks like bal-eige?

its a French word, so I think its pronounced bal-ay-age
