Estee Lauder Wedding Make Up

Sorry if this has been done to death...

I'm getting married in August, in Devon. My bridesmaid's mum has (conveniently!) just got a lovely new boyfriend who is a national distribution manager (or something) for Estee Lauder, and has said "let me know whatever EL make up you want for your wedding, I'll sort it".

I don't normally wear much (ie just focus on eyes/lips and concealer), but want to look good on the day! I went into a lady at boots and she said as I don't wear much, that I should just do the BB cream as a base and then 'any' blush and eyeshadow... but I've recently found out that apparently stuff with SPF in makes 'ghosting' happen, and I have never owned blusher.

I am planning on trying a Debenhams lady instead... but wondered if the S&B queens may help arm me with some advice/information please before I go in?

Thanks in advance!

I was told the EL double wear foundation doesn't photograph well so be careful with their bases.

Could you go to a counter and get made up? Maybe buy a lippie or something to justify it and then take note of the other items you want and get this guy to get them for you?

I think that's what I will have to do, but I've never had that 'done' before either, so not sure if there's anything I should be looking out for/saying?! I always get nervous when I know people are trying to sell me things, and this is an area where I know I have no idea...

Yes any foundation with an SPF will photograph terribly.

EL Double Wear will be fine. I would also recommend MAC Face and Body and Makeup Forever HD foundation. Both photograph beautifully.

Almost more important than your base is a good setting powder. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish is great as it sets everything without completely mattifying the face.

Blotting papers would be handy on the day too. Shisheido do great ones.

If you go in when it's quiet they are often quite keen to do your makeup for you I've been in before just to get a lipstick and they've asked if I wanted them to do it.
I would just say you're looking to try out some new makeup/fancy a new look.

Are you planning on doing your makeup yourself on the big day?

If i feel confident enough (with practice before!) then I'll do it, and if not then said bridesmaid (who is good at this stuff but currently in Thailand) has said she'll do it. Will definitely ask about setting powders, and try to sound like i know what they are!

Do you think it's best not to mention the wedding part? I want to look fairly natural, but not crap, if you know what I mean...

Double Wear is a full coverage foundation so if you have great skin, I'd think it's a pity to wear such a heavy foundation. It can cause flashback so I'd avoid it for that reason too.

Double Wear Light is a lighter foundation and it doesn't cause flashback, so that should be perfectly fine for you.

For blusher, I'd go for something really subtle, such as a light dusty pink or peachy tone. I personally prefer matching my lipstick to my blusher as I find it pulls the makeup together really well.

I'd recommend avoiding HD powders as they seem to cause flashbacks due to the silica. High SPF can also cause flashback, especially if the SPF ingredient is Titanium Dioxide.
Overdoing the amount of shimmer and light reflection can also cause issues, so I'd suggest only to use a highlighter in certain areas of the face.

I've done wedding makeup for about 5 brides this year so far, with another 4 to come.

On everyone, the key is concealer. Lancome concealer is great, put on first onto primed skin. Then dot on foundation - Lancome Teint and Giorgio Armani photograph beautifully. Blend in with a slightly damp sponge.

Loose powder over the top. For blusher, Bobbi Brown Slopes is a fantastic suits-all shade. For lips, Blondie Pink by Bobbi Brown is great your-lips-but-better shade with a bit of gloss pressed in the middle.

Hi OP I got married last year and did my own makeup. I am generally pretty confident applying it, but learnt loads in the year running up to the wedding.

I started by looking online for makeup tutorials. Have a look through some magazines and see if there are any celebrities whose makeup you like the look of, the google their name and makeup tutorials. For some celebs their will be tutorials actually by their makeup artists and for others it will just be other makeup artists attempting to recreate their look. I would watch them and see some of the techniques they use and try them out using makeup you already own.

After you've watched a few and have a bit of an idea then go to any department store and have them apply makeup for you. Your wedding is the perfect excuse, after they've applied it tell them you love it but you won't be buying anything that day as you need to see how it looks in different lights, how it photographs and how it wears off.

Take a selfie (I know I cringed doing that too) in a few different lights and see which bits you like about the makeup they put on. I wouldn't limit yourself to only Estée Lauder stuff, just go to as many as you can. Bobbi Brown do bridal workshops for free and if you pop in beforehand most stands will offer you an appointment to come back and have your makeup applied. Then once you know what you like either pop back to Estée Lauder and see if they do a similar product or check with the guy you are getting the stuff from, someone did something similar for me and I found that they could get the same discount across all of the stores which fall under the parent brand, google it to check who owns Estée Lauder and what their other brands are.

Finally and apologies for the mammoth post (but I love makeup) when trying out foundation, even if you love it don't buy it until you've asked for a sample. Most stands will decant some into a small pot for you which will last a few days, that gives you an opportunity to test out how it wears off, how easy it is to apply yourself, and how it works with primers etc.

EL did my wedding make up - you got a trial, and then booked in again for morning of wedding - this was all free, a few years ago at least. Actually I had two trials as the first assistant wasn't going to be there on wedding day so let me go back again - second one was much better. I bought: a foundation, a lipstick and one other thing (blusher?) and not too expensive really given I got the service for free!

Igggi · 27/06/2014 07:47

This was in a Debenhams by the way.

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 27/06/2014 13:19

Thank you all very much! I don't actually own a foundation or primer, just a couple of BB creams and a handful of concealers, which I somehow manage to combine for going out, and I don't own blusher either... but will def have a look at some online videos and some slebs, and see what I like the look of!

Just had a google... and apparently EL includes MAC, clinique and bobbi brown? suddenly there are so many more possibilities!
