I love the idea of a maxi but struggle to find a simple style that doesn't make me feel like a ship under full sail, any recommendations?

I think it's body shape with maxis. If you are pear shaped then the bandeau elastic boob tube type top ones are great because they make everything look the same size as small boobs-as do a lot of the empire line ones. If you are hourglass then the ones with tie waists are good. Vase shaped better in less floaty more straight cut ones with some boob shaping.

They make most people who aren't stick thin look pregnant, just too much capacious fabric wafting around. Not flattering, I have stopped wearing them. Fitted styles are more flattering.

I have this Oasis maxi in black and it's v flattering. I'm really curvy (now a 12 but was a 16 and my body shape hasn't changed just size).

MyrtleDove · 24/06/2014 14:59

It really really depends on how floaty they are and what your body shape is. I am bigger than you, have broad hips and shoulders and smaller waist, but a high waist so a kind of hourglass/pear cross. I find a sleeveless v-neck maxi with a higher waistband to be really flattering, and with not too much fabric. This shape. It obviously depends on your shape though, plus size people vary in body shape too!

FWIW I find that empire waist ones need broad shoulders for them not to make you look pregnant. Similarly, because I have broad shoulders, strappy dresses look dreadful on me.

I'm a 16 and have a couple of flattering maxis, but I'm tall and an hourglass. It's about shape, not size like pp said.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm more a pear and 5'4 so I think the maxi dress will be a lost cause for me. Also I'm 50 so don't really want to 'look' pregnant either Grin

Can't link but google monsoon Tokyo dress. It's from several years ago but it is seriously flattering. I am an 18 apple shape and bought it after I saw gok recommend it.

I know it is no longer available but I'd recommend this shape.

MyrtleDove · 24/06/2014 17:43

WildThong I'm 5'2 and almost a pear and like I said, some maxis are extremely flattering on me! If you're a definite pear then go for a bandeau or strappy maxi dress. There is a maxi for everyone, it's about body shape - short women can definitely wear them.

Hi, just back from the shops. I tried on several different styles, you are right Myrtle, some were awful but others actually quite nice.
I liked this style from River Island, not floaty or gathered and quite skimming but the back and sides of it hang down really low so it won't do. I'm off to search online for similar.

Glad you found one that suits you, that should be very flattering on a pear. I know George at Asda and New Look have some similar styles in.

furrlinedsheepskinjacket · 25/06/2014 18:27

i'm wearing a denim maxi skirt from next/warehouse £36.

tethersend · 25/06/2014 18:36

I just got this Pearl Lowe/Peacocks one from eBay (it's a few years old) and it is great, v. Flattering.

I'm size 16 and hourglass- I find maxi dresses which have sleeves, are fitted at the top and have a slightly a line skirt work best on me. Wrap ones work well. Also vintage 70s ones, as the top is more fitted.

Anyone a size 16 wearing a flattering maxi?

That is lovely tethersend, quite vintage looking too.
