How do you know if if you'd suit short hair?

Just that really. I have thick hair, naturally wavy which I always straighten as despite several attempts over last ten years I can't make it look good 'natural'

I love short hair on women, think it looks great. I did have very short hair once but I was a lot larger than I am now.

I'd love a long short cut if that makes sense. But don't know if it would suit me.

Short hair does not look good on me at all! I think it depends on what your hair is like, but also your face shape. I've got a round face, I think maybe a heart shaped face is better.

John Frieda claims your jawline is the deciding factor in length of hair. If the distance from your earlobe to your chin is short and you have a sharp angle where the jaw turns, you can go short. If your jaw is long and sloping - not so flattering.

What counts as a short/long distance?

My hair is thick and frizzy and a cross between wavy and curly. I look hideous with short hair......... I love it on other people but sadly I need the length.

runlikeagirl · 22/06/2014 18:30

Hah. I was afraid of that. I hate my hair. I hate the hours it takes to look normal. That I can't just wash my hair and go out. I have to plan my bloody life around washing my hair.

I have a round face and short hair. Lots of people compliment me and I don't think they are all lying Grin

My hair is quite fine and straight which I think helps.

Best to ask your hairdresser I guess. Or buy a cheap wig off Ebay, just to give you a basic idea of what it would look like.

mithuseretrod · 22/06/2014 18:47

I think you have to have a smaller than average nose and an oval or heart shaped face.

Innermagic · 22/06/2014 19:02

Book a consultation with a good hairdresser there is normally no charge, they can give you an honest opinion on wither the texture of your hair and face shape will suit the short style your thinking of. Remember if you can't work with your hair while it's long it will be even harder when it's short and might make you feel frumpy.

If your hair is thick and wavy (like mine) short hair can be a big of a faff in the morning. You can't just tie it back.

peachdaiquirionmytoes · 22/06/2014 19:18

I'm not sure what the optimum length of jaw is, but I am guessing the more defined, i.e. like your photograph, the jaw is, the better short hair will suit. I also know with my own hair, which is wavy, it is much easier to manage longer, as the weight helps pull down the curl. When shorter I find it much springier and requires more effort.

foxdongle · 22/06/2014 19:44

I have thick hair with a slight wave and keep it below my shoulders so it is easy to deal with, if I had mine short I know I would be straightening it daily, whereas now I do it once a week or less. My hair would be very dry and damaged in no time.

My dd hair is more wavy. She had her hair cut in a short bob -just above her shoulders a few years ago.
It went really springy and gorgeous. then she grew it out and it is now half way down her back and nearly straight.

whereisshe · 22/06/2014 19:46

A pointy chin and/or a very defined jawline are usually helpful if you want to look good with short hair.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 22/06/2014 19:48

Try some wigs and find out!

runlikeagirl · 22/06/2014 19:55

Thanks. When my hair is long it takes hours to dry. At the moment it is just below my chin.

I'm so sick of the faff. It was hard work long.

Can you just put it up everyday & get some long layers or fringe & then put the work in when you need to. That way you'll be a bit more sure when going for the full chop. And ask the hairdressers honest opinion.
