Semi-permanent dye has trashed my hair

In a fit of boredom, I used a 28 wash hair dye in a dark mahogany brown shade. As it's washed out, its left my hair in poor condition and several shades lighter than it was, with an orangey tint.

I'm afraid to put another colour on to cover it incase it damages my hair anymore, but I can't live with this colour until it grows out.

I currently have am inch or so of roots showing, which makes my hair look greasy :-(

Any ideas how I can darken my hair without ruining it?

See a hairdresser perhaps?

I'm too short of money to get it fixed professionally. Hence why I was messing about with home dyes in the first place.

What dye did you use Crumpled? I don't use semi permenants but I thought they couldn't lighten your hair, only darken or add red tomes?

Have you tried Head and Shoulders, it can be used intensively to remove dye. Then deep condition.
If you do re-dye, get one slightly lighter than the end result you want and do a patch test.

I used to dye and re-dye my hair when I was in my twenties, but now I find it's getting more porous (I'm 48) it 'grabs' colour more,

Good Luck.

I would suggest using something like the nice and easy loving care hair dye to help tidy it up for a while and prevent more damage? The loving care ones only last up to 8 washes (although I've often found it to last longer if you leave it on for more development time) and it does mean you have to redo it more often.
However, because they are totally non permanant, they don't damage the hair at all. They just coat it with a glossy colour.
I could be wrong but from what I understand even semi-perm hair dyes will still strip some of your natural colour as they do generally still contain a small amount of peroxide I think despite all their claims about being gentle etc. Casting from loreal is usually the worst for this.

My hair colour has been a bit messed up too. I now use the nice and easy wash out (6/8 washes) and leave on for ages - medium brown does the trick. If the colour you buy needs to be mixed with a developer avoid! As it contains peroxide which will lighten hair even slightly. Semi permanent is a load of rubbish as they colour the hair permanently. I'm growing out my hair colour for at least the next year and am keeping it to rinse out colours - so I can go back to highlights. Good luck x

A true semi-permenant will not lift your natural colour or give you roots and should not dry your hair out as they have no ammonia and a low peroxide, I would visit a salon and ask for a gloss colour close to your natural hair colour so you won't have a root as it grows out. Please do not dye your hair lighter with a box dye as this will def go orange and head and shoulders won't work either as you natural hair colour has already been stripped.

What about a permanent home-dye in a shade as close to your natural colour as possible?

Do you have a birthday coming up? Could someone treat you with a salon visit as a present?

Crumpledandcreased · 22/06/2014 22:37

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think it was a Garnier colour I put on and the bottles did need to be mixed. I think I'll try the castings colour - I think I used to use them when I was about 13, blast from the past!

It's a very long time until my birthday so a quick fix is what I really need. I just want my hair to go back to dark brown again.
