using aqueous cream as a face moisteriser?

I'm fed up with skincare. I have really sensitive skin, very red face (think I have what do you call it beginning with 'r'), my face is sort of dry yet greasy at the same time, and most moisturisers bring me out in spots.

I put a thread on here a few months ago about recommendations for a new moisteriser and tried a couple and researched about the recommendations, but I'm fed up of spending money on creams which end out just giving me spots (most recent ones tried no good for my skin).

The only brand which seems to work with me is Dr Hauskha, but the road day cream is too heavy for me, and rose day cream light over the past couple of years feels like I need a bit more than it offers (maybe my skins just getting old?).

I was reading after some online searching the other day an article in a paper about what dermatologists use on their skin and they were talking about aqueous cream, saying how good it was and most creams sit on the surface of the skin whereas this will actually moiserise the skin. So I've started trying it.

Has anyone else tried it as a face cream? I think she [in the article] may have been talking about using it as a body lotion rather than a face cream, it wasn't clear (although I use it as a body lotion already in any case).

It's a bit greasy for the day so I'm wondering if the best route to go is Dr H rose day cream light in morning and aqueous cream at night (I also use Dr H cleanser and toner) but this is go against the Dr H concept of not moisturising at night (from what I understand) so maybe I'm spending a small fortune on Dr H just to go against their principles and it might not work so well.....I'm really confused by it all and quite like the idea of something cheap and effective! I did try using DrH day cream light at night but I just used so much to feel like the skin was moisturised, it was too expensive to do! Have tried other products in Dr H range but none so good as the rose cream.

That was just a bit of mental discussion there wasn't it Blush

I agree with all the aqueous cream advice. I would only use it as a cleanser and even then only if you are not very sensitive.

OP, the La Roche Posay Toleriane (for v sensitive skin) or Rosaliac (for skin that's a bit red) range might suit you. These ranges have light and richer moisturising creams. I also like the physiological cleanser (milk or gel), it's really non-irritant.

I switched to Nivea products after the retro skin care thread on here!
Im in my 50s and have very sensitive skin, prone to exema.
I use th classic nivea in the blue tin at night and although its really thick it seems to matify my skin at the same time - like magic!

I use micellar water for make up removal and eucerin anti redness night cream,I use it in the day as well as it's light enough.

I use Nivea too, and a light BB cream during the day. I slap on the Nivea at night. I don't do it every night though, just when I feel I need it.

Have a look at the ingredients in aqueous cream and I doubt you'll want it anywhere near your face! Pharmacist recommended it for my DS's cradle cap and he had the most horrendous reaction. Obviously each person is different but just look at the contents...

Avene anti-redness is great on my face and it's non-commodore nice which I thnk means it doesn't block your pores.

Most of my psoriasis moisturisers inc double base etc. being me out in horrible spots.

I use a very light witch hazel cleanser as well and my face is definitely improving after years of dry scaly patches and spots from all the horrid thick creams.

Theincidental · 21/06/2014 15:45

That would be non-comodogenic

So many people here have recommended la roche posay. I looked into this as my next option but was confused about which of their products to choose.

Katie you see I hate the blue tub nivea - I get so sweaty underneath it.

bangers yes, that is true, the ingredients sound a bit scary.

I know what you mean about the Nivea. I use it when I'm travelling because the small pots are so convenient and it's a great moisturiser but I only use it at night because it makes me look like an oil slick.

I think you need something labelled oil-free or non-comedogenic.

RebeccaCloud9 · 22/06/2014 10:29

Nivea is just about the only cream I CAN'T use, it really irritates my skin.

Re La Roche Posay, I would recommend the Effaclar Duo plus to use before moisturiser, then choose a moisturiser etc to suit your skin type:

Oily = Effaclar range
Dry = Hydreane range
Sensitive = Toleraine range
Redness = Rosaliac range
Anti-age = Redermic range

Thanks rebecca that's really useful as I was on the boots website and got really muddled with all the products and which one to try.

I would just like to add that it depends on the cause of the dryness of your skin. I was told for a long time I had excema and to use e45 etc and it just made it worse. Eventually I paid to see a non nhs dermatologist when my face head legs stomach back were all covered in red dry itchy skin. Turns out I had psorasis and aqueous cream works wonders. It is now mostly under control but when I get the odd patch whether it is on my body or my face I put aqueous cream on it and it immediately soothes. Not all dry skin conditions are the same. Excema and Psoriasis are always grouped together but are completely different and need different products. OP lots of people thought my red face was rossacia it wasn't.

Right, I've ordered an aveeno face moisteriser which arrived yesterday. Only used it a couple of times so will withold judgement until I know how it reacts properly with my skin, but so far, I love it! Soaks in nicely and makes my skin feel so smooth and lovely, just like a moisteriser should. I forgot what this was like!
