Just fallen foul of an online beauty scam -£90!

And I feel really really stupid!

It was an ad link from a blogger I follow ( and trust) saying that companies needed people to rest new beauty products. Registered my details and it said I could have a new skin cream for £2.99 as part if the trial. Cream duly turns up and it's fine - only used it a couple of times so far. But today they took £90 out my account.

Phoned the bank who said there's not much they can do as I supplied my account details and to check the terms. Sure enough, in a really tiny link there's a bit about if you don't cancel the subscription within14 days they will consider you a member for £90 a month! And my 14 days was up today!

I feel really stupid - and annoyed. Anyone got any ideas what to do about it?

And don't anyone else fall for it. The cream is not THAT great!!ConfusedHmm

Oh bless you. I fell foul of a similar thing some years ago, if it makes you feel better. It was some stupid gift website that took £30 out of my account every month - I realised 2 months in and swiftly cancelled!

Money saving expert have something on this saying that banks are wrong to say they can't do anything about it - it's a 'continuous payment authority' or something like that? But your bank can cancel it, you just have to bug them to. Threaten to leave the bank if they don't. But yes check money saving expert site. Good luck!

Butterflyspring · 20/06/2014 22:13

the bank can cancel it - they are wrong saying they can't. They can also refund the money.

Cuteypatootey · 20/06/2014 22:35

It's disgusting all the companies that are getting away with this. This seems like quite a popular scam. Even if you had remembered to cancel they probably would have made it incredibly difficult.

itsbetterthanabox · 20/06/2014 23:32

Have you been sent the full size version? If so you may be able to send if back for a refund and ofc cancel the autoship.

peasandlove · 20/06/2014 23:35

I second asking the bank to reverse the charge and cancel the payment. I did this once after I was charged for some phone insurance I never took out.

PeppermintInfusion · 21/06/2014 00:49

They can cancel a continuous payment authority (CPA) on a debit card but not on a credit card, it depends which you'd paid with.

I'd also be tweeting/commenting on the post of the blogger

peasandlove · 21/06/2014 01:08

cancel the credit card in that case

Chocolategirl7 · 21/06/2014 06:09

I paid on debut card and will speak to the dispute team at the bank when they open at 9am.
I will threaten to cancel the account - thanks for that suggestion.
It's sent my account into the (agreed ) overdraft tho so I'm being charged for that till payday too! Grrrrrrr

Even of you cancel the credit card it may still charge you as you have supposedly authorised it... That was how it worked back when I worked in a bank anyway. The payment can be cancelled on a debit card though, and if you ask they might refund then charge if you haven't had too many before.

Chocolategirl7 · 22/06/2014 19:36

I paid on debit card and bank saying they will stop any future payments and suggested I contact trading standards but I've lost the £90.
Gutted!

The bank can cancel the payment (it's a longer process than cancelling direct debit though) and they may issue you a new bank card with same account number but new 16 digit number however legally they do NOT have to offer you a refund as it isn't fraud you have provided the bank details and it was stated in the t&c about the charge (albeit in a very sneaky way) I work for large high st bank and had similar request from a customer (hers was diet pills first month was £5 and she thought that was it but they took £90 a month) some to many departments and got the recurring payment cancelled but customer had to contact the company to dispute payment as she had provided details

I did this Blush & bought some cream for just the postage costs, failing to notice the tiny tiny small print that signed me up for a monthly supply at nearly £200 a time! The first I knew was when I received an email telling me my next order was about to be sent. I rang up & complained, moaned a lot about the fact I felt I'd been duped & the ongoing supply was stopped. I still had to receive & pay for the second lot though. Angry

peasandlove · 23/06/2014 10:32

god makes you sick doesnt it. I totally avoid these things as I know you're going to get ripped off somewhere down the line, but it makes me angry for you.

moggiesmum · 23/06/2014 12:47

I fell for a similar thing with slimming pills - recommended by Channel 4 ( or so it said) in an online advert - paid for the postage only £4.99 for a trial supply and then they debited £90.00 next month as I had not cancelled my on going supply! The T & C's were not in the advert. I rang them in America and a high handed woman said I could not have a refund as I had not cancelled - so I quoted my distance selling consumer rights and eventually she said I had to return in the original packaging on a Recorded insured delivery to a PO address in Scotland -- which I did and a month later they gave me £60.00 back saying £20.00 was for admin costs and this was also in the T's and C's Shock

moggiesmum · 23/06/2014 12:48

Sorry - that should read £30.00 !! Confused
