Going to Royal Albert Hall on Saturday night. What should I wear?

I have absolutely nothing smart in my wardrobe.
Again, another one of those occasions where I will have to find pieces to put together and look reasonable.
I can't do right without t-shirt/trainers/jeans.
Aaaargh

But I own own nice hand bag at least!

What exactly are you going to see? For the most part jeans, nice boots, and a dressed up top half would be fine tbh.

Etah · 19/06/2014 22:32

Romeo&Juliet in the evening.

Lots of people go there after spending the whole day sightseeing, so not necessary to dress up to the nines - though some people do do that.

Sicaq · 20/06/2014 08:59

Depends on the event, but it's pretty laid back, I found. The venue itself is a bit Blackpool pier-end not as posh as it looks from outside. Most people were in jeans and nice shoes when I went.

sinningsaint · 20/06/2014 14:09

I used to work at the RAH and jeans with nice top/heels was the pretty general attire and jeans and shirt for men.

The Albert Hall gets absolutely boiling hot in the summer - at times unbearably so, especially if you are sitting higher up. I would take lots of thin layers. I would be going for lightweight skirt or dress or trousers, not jeans or boots.

Second 101handbags - I was there in the summer for a gig and it was so hot I thought I was going to pass out. Thin layers, lightweight clothes. You don't have to be supersmart.

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 20/06/2014 16:23

On two out of the three occasions I've been to the RAH someone has collapsed! One in the standing pit at a prom, who had just fainted briefly, and once from the front row of a performance of Carmen in the round which was more serious. He fell face forwards right onto the lowered stage about five minutes from the end of the performance. Medics out to him and everything, a curtain went up around him and the cast had to continue with their bows and (foreshortened) ovations in front of it. Was very upsetting for all involved. Don't know what actually happened to him but it didn't look good at the time. So yes, thin layers, linen trousers etc at this time of year, but either way we're not talking jewel encrusted floor length eveinng gowns.

HatieKokpins · 20/06/2014 16:48

It's not the opera, you're not obliged to wear the family jewels ;)

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 20/06/2014 17:02

Last time I went to the Albert Hall it was 80% casual, 20% Final Fantasy cosplay... it really does depend on the event, it's not 'posh' in its own right Smile Even the when I've been to the Proms it's been a real mish-mash of styles. Be comfortable I'd say.

Etah · 20/06/2014 17:11

Hmmmm

I just don't want to wear jeans as I wear jeans evevery single day and also my nicest pair is a bit tight.

I have few nice tops that go with my pleated black skirt but would it be horrendous if I wear with tights? And I guess nude tights are a big no-no......

I have one synthetic pair of black trousers but it isn't skinny or straight leg so doesn't look nice with my nice pumps, just with my working shoes.

I have a beige dress that goes well with my pumps but I never used it at night....would it be ok?

Agree with pp that it can get unbearably hot in summer

LindaMcCartneySausage · 20/06/2014 17:25

Going out to theatre etc in London is really very casual. Be smart in the sense of clean, ironed, relatively fashionable clothes, but I agree that jeans, nice flat shoes like sandals or ballet pumps (it's a schlep from the tube) and a silk top will be fine

And it does get very hot and stuffy in there

polyhymnia · 20/06/2014 17:45

Really don't worry. London theatres etc very casual these days - plenty of jeans even at the Opera House.
Anything goes at Albert Hall - specially as it gets so hot. No one will notice or care whether you wear tights or not, so go for what you feel comfortable and happy in.

Etah · 20/06/2014 17:45

Yeah I usually go during winter so can get away with boots and coats.

Royal Albert Hall is very casual, the areas outside the hall aren't really that nice. And it is prone to getting boiling hot as everyone has mentioned. Plus the long walk from the tube.

You can wear whatever you like. Ballet is often a slightly more fashiony crowd than other classical music events there and if you have an expensive seat you might want to dress up - but you'll be just as likely to be sat next to someone in scruffy jeans and a T-shirt. Anyone dressed in more than smart trousers and a top, or a nice day dress will stand out as unusual. However if it makes you happy, wear it! Anything goes!

crazyspaniel · 20/06/2014 20:10

Absolutely do not wear tights if the weather is remotely warm. You will pass out!

twostepsister · 20/06/2014 20:22

Have been a few times and dress code is mostly smart casual unless you are sitting in the expensive boxes then it's strictly ball gowns : )
I am there on Wednesday night and plan to wear smart top, ankle grazers and block heels. It does get really hot so wear something lightweight and have a jacket handy for the long walk back to the tube.

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 20/06/2014 20:44

I've sat in a top price box that was privately catered, in jeans, glittery top, and heeled boots, and was the smartest person there...

Seriously, just wear what makes you happy, as a pp said. You'll enjoy yourself far more.

Etah · 20/06/2014 21:24

No tube tomorrow so I will switching between train and buses too...
