Ok, I know nothing - can someone help me out?

I am the least fashionable person you can imagine. Think Amy Farrar-Fowler.

Our wedding anniversary is coming up and I want to look nice. Stuff during the day followed by a meal out.

I'm very fond of a skinny jean/blazer combination. But what the hell do I wear as a top/ on my feet?

I'm short and fat and ballets just are not flattering. But I can't do shoes without a strap (eg court shoes are generally out) Sad as I fall over.

Hopeless case, or does anyone think they can help?

I'm not sure I'm exactly what you'd call fashionable, but I know exactly what you mean re. shoes.

I can't walk in heels, but I've found that if it's a small wedge (or even a slightly higher one), it's pretty easy. :) Maybe something like this, but in any colour: www.next.co.uk/g39232s1#886715g39

For a top, maybe just a plain-coloured cami top, with a stand-out necklace? Or wear a something light over it, like a chiffon cardigan?

I think ASOS is great for nice (and inexpensive) clothes, I'm almost certain you can search based on what occasion you're dressing for, but I might be wrong on that.

I've no real sense of what suits me (other than colours) so about 5 years ago went to personal shopper at John Lewis (oxford st). They were brilliant and have been back several times since.
Service is free, just book appt well in advance (esp for a weekend) and there is no obligation/pressure to buy what they suggest. I have ended up buying most of what they suggest though as has always suited and given me looks that I would never have thought would suit.
I'm pretty sure they offer that service in other branches too, and also other dept stores like Debenhams.

Hi OP, I would agree that maybe an appointment to get some ideas would be an excellent way forward.

Perhaps a dress would be a better option for a special occassion? It's also much easier to find a dress to suit a body type than it is other types of clothing!

If you are set on the jeans and blazer combo (which I really like too Smile) then I would recommend pairing with something like:

these

or perhaps these or maybe these?

You can find nine west at debenhams or john lewis, and they are good quality shoes.

For the top, it partly depends on your budget. I would personally recommend on wearing something a little loose, if you are going to be wearing tight jeans. But if you think something tighter would suit your figure more then I'll see if I can find an option for that as well.

Overall with the jean/blazer combo, the best colour combination (in my view!) is dark blue jeans, with a dark blazer (normally dark blue again) and then pale colours for the shoes and top, or at least a pale coloured top. Otherwise the outfit can look really "heavy". Don't go for anything too flouncy - the jean/blazer combo is meant to be quite preppy.

Something like this as a cheaper version, or if you want to splash out, something like this. You will need to wear a plain white vest top underneath, but you will find them anywhere.

The best thing to do would be to wear the jeans you have to the shop and try on different tops with them to see what you like. Do bring the blazer if you can, as looser tops will look much better with the blazer on - it just looks more structured.

Don't forget to wear a nice pair of earrings and do your hair!
