Easy smart up do with fringe

And the moon on a stick please...

I have shoulder length blonde hair with a fringe and am going to a posh do this Sat in a pretty frock. For reasons which I cannot explain said pretty frock looks better with hair up. I am shit at such things and hair up for me means either twisted into a loose bun or in a pony tail, both with bits pulled down around my face because as much as I love my fringe it doesn't look right without being softened a bit. I can't go to the hairdresser as DH is abandoning me with 3 DS for the weekend and I have a babysitter booked for the evening whilst I am out but no cover during the day. Can anyone direct please me to an easy to do but smart up do which is fringe compatible? I am
A Bit Inept with hair (the never-been-able-to-French-plait sort) but am happy to stick lots of pins in and apply gallons of hairspray.

Gibson Tuck with a pretty pin / brooch / flower worked in?

rockybalboa · 19/06/2014 11:45

Actually there are a few French twists on Pinterest which might be within my ability. Hairspray I have, pins I can buy but presumably I need some sort of product to make my hair stay in place. My hair is generally quite fine with not much ooomph. I can put mousse in when I wash it in the morning but is there some sort of must have styling product I can buy in Boots to put on before I put it up?

Watching with interest! My hair is basically the same and I have a do later in the month Smile I was going to do a fish tale plait but think its a bit boring.....

rockybalboa · 19/06/2014 13:45

Jokers if you can do a fishtail plait then you are several steps ahead of me! I can do a fishtail loom band but not a plait. Pinterest has lots of ideas. Gibson Tuck or French Twist looking good for me at the mo.

I got a slide think from boots that holds your hair in place to do a fish tail plait. Can't do it without it! Best £4.99 I've spent in a long time!

It your hair long enough to put into a high bun without bits falling down at the back? If so you could do that, or otherwise you could go for a low bun, which looks just as nice.

You will need to blow dry your hair with a brush first to get a tiny bit of volume, then do a small amount of back combing at the crown. You then brush the top layer of hair smooth, so it just looks like you have volume. Put a little hair spray in the hair at the back so it hold the grips better. But not too much. You don't want to be a walking fire hazard.

The you can start to put it up. The lady in the picture below would be a good inspiration. It looks like she has curled her hair (save her fringe and the front bits) before pinning it up, to give it a bit more volume and interest. But that aside, this looks very simple!

Have a look at the hair tutorials on the Small Things blog (sorry on phone can't do link). She's great at Mid length up dos that are v easy to do.

Eminybob · 19/06/2014 20:57

Claire's have gadgets to help make various up do's.

I find a bun made with a bun ring always looks nice and smart (unless it's a mahoosive drug smuggler one) and dress it up with a sparkly clip

SunshineofRay · 19/06/2014 21:02

What about a half up do? Just take a bit of hair from each side and pin up, very easy and you could maybe curl the down bit
