Call me crazy but I am going to attempt to highlight my hair at home!

Just that really,

I can't afford to get my hair coloured professionally. It's just too expensive!

I'm a mousy brown colour naturally and anything darker washes me out. I don't feel good as a brunette either. Th last time I had my hair coloured at a hairdressers was 8 months ago. I had a natural base colour and lots of blonde/golden blonde highlights put through. It looked lovely.

My roots are bad, I need to do something. If any one could help me with some questions it would be greatly appreciated.

Is there anyone here who home highlights? Do they have any recommendations?

Any tips? Do most people use the caps provided? I don't think I could faff with foils.

How about maintenance. How do you touch up roots? Put the cap on again and highlight all the hair?

I'm slowly getting myself out of a style rut and this is my next venture :-)

I'm a natural mousy brown too and use this:

You can spray all over or just bits of hair. Makes my hair go a lovely colour and everyone comments on it. Hairdresser said that only a profession could tell that it wasn't done in a hairdressers.

Is the lightening spray mentioned by bouncychair similar to 'Sun In' ? That stuff never seemed to do my hair much good - brittle and straw like. I do like the sound of the J Frieda one, but am rather wary.

L'oreal preference has a new highlighting kit - not the ombré one a newer one - can't find link but is on special offer on super drug x

I used to do it at home with a cap when I was a student - it was hideous! But then I have long hair - with short hair it might be do-able. I'd go for an all-over colour for home dying these days.

I highlight my daughters at home with a cap.. and it looks lovely.. She has very long hair which is dark blonde in some places with natural light bits and I do very fine highlights.. she has been asked many times where she gets it done . It looks natural and not at all stripey as I think foils sometimes do.

You need someone to do it for you tho.

As her hair goes blonder in summer anyway we tend to just do it in autumn, mid winter and spring:)
This is her hair recently (but before the sun this week.. she's blonder already!) I don't think it looks home done, and I'm no professional!

Wow medusa she looks gorgeous! Can you tell me how you do the fine highlights? Do you weave them? That looks like really expensive 'natural' highlights.

I sit her on the floor with her head between my knees, ram the highlighting cap on (either the cheap ones that come with the dye or if can find it a rubber one ..you can buy them) get that hideous crochet hook thingy and start pulling! I start at the front and pull thro lots and lots of tiny strands... really fine.., through each hole, with slightly thicker ones further down..I concentrate in the top and front sides like hair lightens naturally.

Then slop the bleach stuff on and leave her to cook for 40 mins :D
I always buy the boxes that come with a cap (I like Wella when I can get it) and her hair is mid back length ..one box does fine.

I love that pic..took it at Easter when the rape seed was out so we snook into a farmers field with my camera ! Said beautiful child finished her 4th year medicine student exams today and is currently out getting shit faced Grin Bet she won't look like this tomorrow!!!!

Haha bless her, hope she passes with flying colours!
