Shaping / control slip experiences please?

So I have bought this ever so attractive control slip to wear under a dress, as I looked at spanx recommended on here but can't afford it Sad.

The website said a size small was UK 10-12 but the label on the garment says it's US 4-6. Is that the same size? It took about five minutes of wriggling to actually get on. Do I need to stop deluding myself and size up or is this how shape wear is supposed to be? Once on it feels comfy though I'm not sure it actually takes any inches off. Maybe I was hoping for miracles Grin

Any ideas please?

I would have thought a US 4-6 was closer to UK 8 - 10.

I've no idea how a control slip is supposed to feel though.

A control slip wont take inches off!

It will smooth lumps and bumps and slim the silhouette a little but not massively.

They are not elegant or lady like to put on OR take off and normally involve shimming into rather interesting positions.

They should feel COMFORTABLE but SNUG, inho.

SmileAndNod · 18/06/2014 11:51

Oh I was hoping for too much then Sad.

It is very comfy, but it is very snug. And it was a right old faff to get into, having to wiggle this way and that and it took a while to stretch it up over my hips. Should it go on easier than that? Nothing moves once it's on.

Going to the loo will be a bit of a mare I should imagine Shock

It sounds like it fits ok.

Going to the loo in shape ware is a nightmare full stop.

I have one of the spanx ones which has a double gusset so it is just about manageable for a pee but still requires some careful planning!

What is the dress you are trying to get into is it too small or just not quite the right shape?

I use shape ware for under things that need s bit of extra support without lines showing through rather than if a dress is too small iyswim?

Dress is ok, it's more for me trying to feel nice about myself. Have had three children and hate the way I look, fat, frumpy, knackered and old. Confidence is zero. It's a family wedding I'm going to and don't want to let D B down. Dreading it though...

Oh bless you.

I bet you will look great, you will NOT let the DB if you turned up in a sack they want YOU THERE, because they LOVE YOU.

How old are you? I know I certainly feel fat, frumpy, knackered and old some days and just want to hid under the duvet and smash all the mirrors in the house!

What about hair, make up, accessories and shoes? Bet we can find a combination that makes you look and feel fab.

Do you have a link or photo of the dress?

SmileAndNod · 18/06/2014 19:32

Thanks for responding. I've posted loads of times about the dress and have had lots of helpful suggestions, it's the blue slinky knot House of Fraser dress. Still undecided about my hair as it's not long enough anymore to do anything lovely with.

I'm 41 and definitely feeling it these days!

Do you mean that Pied a terre one?

If so that dress is STUNNING!

Yes I would probably wear a control slip underneath it because being a little more support would definitely help. The draping is OH so flattering anyway and if it is the electric blue one the colour OH SO AMAZING!

That is a FAB dress, you will ROCK IT!

Ok, my top tips. Control tights in a light shimmer or control micro nets to make your legs look there absolute best. A slightly higher heel than you would normally go for to thin you down even more, a great fitted bra to lift you up even more.

A statement bracelet to pull attention to your hands and wrists

A short necklace because that neck line is amazingly flattering on everyone women.

A clutch to die for

A blow dry for your hair and maybe something glittering to wear in it a fab clip, or side tiara even will make even the shortest hair look seriously glam.

Make up to enhance your best features (eyes, lips, jaw line whatever)

Now the difficult bit, stand in front of the mirror and SAY I LOOK FAB, I HAVE amazing x,y,z (pick your best bits we all have them) and repeat it everyday until you start believe it! Because the one thing that will make you look amazing is ATTITUDE, if you feel amazing you look amazing.

Go for it have a good time, and remember you are a wonderful person and you look a million dollars.

I bought exactly the same thing last year from Figleaves in a medium and I am the same size as you. I wear it very rarely as it is extremely snug and mid-thigh bulge (where the garment finishes) is pretty obvious in skin tight dresses but I buy Duo Boots for thin calves and I know my thighs are slim!
They are a necessary evil for me in dresses due to my stomach.
I am confused as to where the front bit is supposed to go though....around the side of the boob i imagine as it digs in anywhere else and leaves lines?

p.s. from experience, always lock the loo door. Actually ...never go to the loo!

ygritte · 19/06/2014 22:37

I am a 10-12, not sure if I just assumed that you were from your post?

SmileAndNod · 20/06/2014 13:25

Me again. Yes it's the pied a Terre dress, in the bright blue.

Newname I had not thought about tights, I was going for bare legs but with some fake tan or leg make up. Shoes I think I've narrowed down to silver or nude and I'm toying with idea of a small hat or something as it's a wedding, I love hats, and I never get to wear one. If I do I think I will play down the shoes and clutch? Also on the look out for a fab bracelet. I tend not to wear necklaces as they annoy me, and Dd has a tendency to grab when feeding! Have tried on what I have and still feel a bit meh. Have been sat with someone whose just had their tummy sorted so going to feel extra crap about myself.

Ygritte yes I'm a 10/12. Wondering if the medium would be easier to get on? I went with the figleaves sizing so I'm not too sure now Confused. I don't get any bulge where the legs end (I think) but I will check again!

I'm going to bravissimo next month hopefully for a fitting, the bra ladies have suggested some styles that may work for me. I'm quite hopeful but again I'm expecting miracles
