It's the dreaded holiday shop - Shorts (aka the work of the devil!!!)

I can't avoid it much longer - I'm going to have to go on the dreaded hunt for shorts again soon :-(

I hate shopping for shorts, I am a pear shape, I have a huge arse and thighs and I hate shorts but our holiday is coming up soon and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and but some. So can anyone recommend where they get theirs from please?

And I get my shorts from Gap, btw. I find the shorter styles more flattering as I am 5'4

Gap here too. I don't love shorts but I wanted some for holidays last year. Got some in bright green and some on stone. They do the job just fine.

I got a couple of pairs in Matalan, recently, more like a skort really than shorts.

A linen pair in M&S a couple of years back.

And yes, I re-incarnate my old jeans into shorts. If the jeans are on their way out, I'm not losing anything. And there's no way I'd pay £40 for rough looking denim shorts when I can hack up my rough looking denim jeans Hmm

Could you wear a knee length skirt or a maxi rather than a mini skirt then you won't flash your bum at anyone.

I share your pain!
I recently got these in the sale and are quite flattering.

We are going away on a sort of adventure holiday this year, I can't see me rock climbing, or climbing in and out of canoes in a maxi dress or skirt.... perhaps more for evening / meals out etc but I really do need something more practical for daytime wear.

I haven't worn shorts in years but did this year on our holiday. I got these ones from H&M. They are longer than they look online. I'm also pear shaped but thought these looked quite good.

I'm a pear shape who failed to find new shorts to buy for a holiday last year. In desperation, I bought some at the airport, from monsoon and they are more flattering than any shorts I've been able to find in recent years. They are chambray and have very slight pleats in the front, which stops that horrid pull of fabric across the the thighs that you get with flat fronted shorts. They don't have the exact ones in Monsoon this year, but something similar.

I'm a bit peer shaped and have awful knees. Shorts are the most hideous things on me and I haven't worn them for a couple of decades. Shorts seem to point to my knees so that everyone notices how shit they are.

I got these beach shorts www.next.co.uk/x53230s4#661295x53 this year and they're more flattering on me.

Don't wear shorts. They look awful. I wear dresses and skirts in summer. Even on holiday. Nice cotton or linen skirts and dresses can look casual worn with flat sandals, trainers or whatever.

No to shorts unless you're very very slim and tgeyre short shorts. Naff mid thigh length shorts are just awful. Stick to skirts or better still, dresses.

If they are for rock climbing and canoeing then I would get some kind of technical shorts rather than 'fashion' shorts.

I'm buying these when payday comes. They were flattering on and longer than they look on the website.

I think different things suit different people. I think my body shape suits shorts and playsuits, but have geat difficulty finding jeans that look good. Likewise with dresses and skirts: some look good but others just frumpy.

Will quite happily wear short shorts with tights but when the weather gets warmer I like something a little longer and less tight.

Oh, I forgot. This is for going on holiday. Wear what you like! I'll be wandering around the beach and surrounding area in a bikini and I know I'm no supermodel!

Here's an interesting blog post on shorts and less than perfect legs. What's your conclusion?

Tennis skirts are great for active holidays as they are a good length with built in shorts underneath. And lovely big pockets too.

That blog post was really interesting, 50 Shades

I can't help thinking that the problem is not 'women with imperfect bodies wearing shorts', but 'women wearing shorts that don't fit'.

No matter what size you are, or how taut and cellulite-free, everyone looks better in shorts with a bit of room in them. And ones which don't flash butt-cheek. Same goes for all clothes, really.

JMO, but I'm old.

You might be better with a golf skort rather than one for tennis as the golf ones tend to be longer.

My thought exactly Koala. One of the comments under the post says something like, it's not really women with bad legs but women with bad shorts.

I'm all for short (ish) shorts, but anything tight around the top of the thigh probably doesn't help. And I don't want to flash my bum cheeks because - bikini on beach excepted - I don't want to flash my bum cheeks!

I've really gone off shorts of late.
I prefer sun dresses, mini/maxi skirts and capris.
I suppose they're ok for the beach though.

50 - my conculsions on that blog are that absolutely every picture of legs was better than my fat ugly legs!

Well I ordered several hundred pounds worth of shorts - found 1 bloody pair I like! Grrrrr. Even the skirts, they all seem to have bulky pockets built in which just adds bulk where it's not needed :-(

I've just ordered these in navy and peach.

I bought some denim shorts from Dorothy Perkins a few weeks back. I put them on yesterday to slob about and both my teens said they looked good! Shock
