Water, sugar or sleep?

Had any one increased water and sleep and/or eradicated sugar and found any of the above has made a difference to their skin/weight/health?

Low carbing made me look fantastic - my skin was gorgeous and I looked really healthy. And lost all u baby weight. I can't tell if it was no sugar or sinking lta of water though as the diet involved both.

I got back on the carbs and look much worse for it. I start again on Monday!

CaulkheadUpNorth · 14/06/2014 10:23

Increase of sleep and water makes me skin better. It has a sort of glow/nice colour rather than looking paler.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 14/06/2014 10:23

*my skin

Excuse millions of typos Blush

Drinking more water has actually improved my sleep, and both have improved my energy loads. My skin? Not a jot of difference. I'm thinking of cutting out sugar next, too, as an experiment....

ThisBitchIsResting · 14/06/2014 14:02

It's def a combo - when you want something sugary, have a glass of water or herbal tea instead. And if you normally snack or booze in the evenings, get in the bath and defuzz / scrub / soak / generally pamper yourself and then an early night with a good book / MN! Low carb and high protein and fat works wonders for skin.

Have reduced sugar. Skin much better. (my cheese habit though has become much worse)

blueberry2310 · 14/06/2014 21:19

Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to start on the water and sleep before tackling sugar and carbs. Would love to cut the sugar out completely but think it may have to happen slowly.

Trying to cut out sugar & have started taking acidipilus to increase my gut flora which in turn helps with the digestion.

Have increased my water intake & am sleeping all the way through so I feel a lot sharper than before.

callamia · 14/06/2014 22:59

Is like to know how you get on. I wonder whether i should just accept looking crap as a condition of breastfeeding and not sleeping much?

Breastfeeding makes me ridiculously hungry (my diet is currently fairly carb heavy, but I do drink tons of water), and I've lost all of my baby weight + half a stone. My skin is monstrous though.

Coumarin · 14/06/2014 23:21

I've done all three and seen a huge improvement in skin and my mood. I think cutting out sugar makes the biggest difference but very closely followed by water and sleep.

I wish I'd started years ago.

I still have fruit btw.

Coumarin · 14/06/2014 23:22

Oh and I eat carbs, just not white ones.

SunnyUpNorth · 14/06/2014 23:33

Ooh interesting, I've just started reading the book 'I Quit Sugar'. It's very convincing but I can't quite bring myself to go for it. It is pretty anti fruit and I don't think I could give up fruit. Might try and go more low carb though and make an effort to avoid hidden sugars in sauces/drinks/cereals etc.

I've been taking iron and vitamin D supplements and I think the vit d has really helped with my skin, and the iron with my sleep and tiredness.

Sleepwhenidie · 14/06/2014 23:41

I work in the nutrition field, I don't think you need to eliminate fruit, but keep it to 2, max 3 portions per day. Then minimise sugar, (yes, juice, soft drinks and cereal), processed food, white carbs and anything with ingredients you don't have in your kitchen. Vit D3 (Oct-May) and omega3 supplements can make a big difference but IMO the biggest enemies re health and weight are sugar, stress and lack of sleep.

Skinheadmermaid · 15/06/2014 01:17

Eating less sugar and junk food in general has improved my skin immensly. Even my hormonal break outs are less.
When as I eat something 'bad' my skin erupts the next day!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/06/2014 01:26

Same as coumarin!

blueberry2310 · 15/06/2014 04:33

I don't think id give up fruit. Just mainly the obvious sugar such as cakes, choc, sauces. I'm pretty fit, I run a lot but my chocolate weakness lets me down. I've cut it out before and not actually missed it after the first few days. It's my skin that looks terrible at the moment. I'm failing already on the water, it's lunchtime (Southern Hemisphere) and I've barely drunk anything. Right to the tap...

Oh and I think the lack of sleep and eating crap often go hand in hand.

Around Easter time I decided to give up/reduce white carbs and up my water intake. I feel so much better for it. I have a lot more energy. I've always slept well 7-8 hours a night and I've never really eaten much sugar. It's definitely worth a try.

specialsubject · 15/06/2014 12:28

simple carbs (sugar, sweets, biscuits) are empty calories and the things we all need to eat less of. No food is bad per se.
complex carbs are an essential part of a normal food intake.

dehydration will make you feel rough.

santamarianovella · 15/06/2014 13:10

Def sleep,If I have a good night sleep,I wakeup with a fresher brighter skin, sleep increases collagen production and blood circulation, and keeps skin plump because it keeps moisture in,

I could never cut out friuts, and I still eat carbs, just not the white processed stuff(cereals, white bread,biscuits..etc)
