Right then, what do I do with my hair?

Right I'm going to try and give myself a make over, hair, make up, clothes. Going to start with hair.

My hair has never gone much below my shoulders. I've always had it coloured and quite often with funky colours. We moved abroad a couple of years ago and I haven't found a hairdresser I like so I have been giving myself the Mumsnet haircut and letting the grey come through. Since we've been here my hair has grown way down my back and is showing a natural wave when I wash it and let it dry naturally and don't brush it. When its brushed it can be a bit fly away and all over the place.

Now I love my hair being long at the moment as I never have had the chance to have long hair. So what sort of style should I have it cut into around my face? Should I have a fringe? Should I carry on growing the grey through? Should I go for having it coloured? Either the blonde that is my natural colour or another colour? What sort of shampoos/conditioners/ products should I use to encourage the wave? Or should I blow dry it straight? All I do at the moment is wash, condition, serum and dry naturally. I don't brush on the first day. Brush second day and then wash a d don't brush the next and so on.

Also can anyone give me any tips for putting it up. In cack handed so quick, simple, no fading ideas would be great.

I'll be 50 next year and I have just gone back to work after many years as a SAHM.

Right then, what do I do with my hair?

Hi, I think you hair looks lovely!

I would be tempted to get an inch off, on the picture from the back you can see lots of thick hair then a few scraggly bits at the bottom. So would just take it all to the thickest part (really not a lot though)

I'm also liking it without a fringe, how about switching it to a side parting for a little change?

Colour wise I would keep the blonde but would possibly add a darker blonde (not brown!) just to break it up and give it some depth.

I'm not too sure about products for hair with a wave, maybe a touch of sea salt spray? Or a handful of very light mousse.

I agree with everything Fcukfifa has said above. I was going to say exactly the same things! Smile
A side parting would make a really big difference I think. It's quite hard to wear middle partings with long hair for most people I've found. Especially as you start to get a little older.
I'd say cut 2 -3 inches from the bottom of your hair just to make it look thicker and healthier at the ends.
Also agree that a slightly darker colour might be nice.
You have a gorgeous wave to your hair. It's lovely!

For putting it up, have you thought about something simple like a sock bun? The added bonus to this is that it can help give your hair extra wave when you take it out, and it only takes about 60 seconds to do. There are lots of tutorials on your tube on how to do it.

You've got lovely hair, yy to what the other poster said about the colour. Mix it up a bit, give it some depth mad texture. Keep to ashy/caramel shades and lop about an inch off.

On a separate note. I think you could change your glasses to and go for something with a frame, some d shaped frames in a slim plastic, tortoiseshell or navy? Jail sander has some nice ones?

Lucky you having such lovely hair!

Thanks folks. Sorry to not get back to you earlier but our weekend is Friday and Saturday and yesterday we didn't stop, out early and back late. Just finding 5 minutes before w head out today.

Thanks for the compliments on my hair. Will be cutting my hair in the week and will do as you suggest. Side parting and an inch or two lobbed off. Will post a picture when done.

For the colour are you suggesting hi-lights? If so, would you cover over the grey with a block colour and then hi-lights or just put the hi-lights through with the grey? Does that make sense?

Will sit down tomorrow and look at sock buns on You Tube. Thanks for the tip. Any other ideas?

Have Gooogled sea salt spray and will put that on my shopping list, thanks.

Nilby, I burst out laughing when I read your glasses thing. They were my first thing on the new me list and they are only about a month old Grin they're Burberry and cost me about £250. Looks like I made the wrong choice :-/ . I'm going to have to wear them now until I can afford to change them in a year or so.

Sorry another question, any recommendations for for a comb or brush?

Hiya, I'm not too sure ab

Fcukfifa · 14/06/2014 09:47

Sorry, my stupid fingers pressed the post button too soon!

I'm not too sure about the colours blending with the grey, it might be better to have a consultation with the hairdresser. If you get two or three shades of blonde the grey might mingle in well.

Also, have a look at tangle teaser brushes, they are supposed to be good =)

YellowStripe · 14/06/2014 10:40

Hair - I think about three inches off, and fine highlights (or would they be lowlights?) in darker blonde/caramelly colours through the grey - maybe opt for two or more different shades. What sort of brands have you got access to in your shops?

Have a look on youtube or Pinterest for ideas on how to put it up - big clips/barrettes etc.

Glasses - they look very similar to my latest rimless ones (also £250!). Tbh, I think once you sort your hair and make up, they will look fine (not that I think they don't already!).

PS (said with love!) - when taking a selfie, don't look down into the camera voice of bitter experience

We can get just about anything here it's just that the malls are miles apart and rather than one mall having a selection of Boots like shops each mall has a different one, if that makes sense. At the moment if I can I'm thinking about stuff I could possibly buy in Boots or Lush. Will get a tangle teaser when I am back in the UK at the start of July.

Am going to get it coloured when we get to the UK and then I think I've got a good hairdresser I can co to here when we get back.

Thanks for the selfish tip. Never done one before so wasn't sure how to do it and its accepted in the spirit in which it was given.

I'm a similar age to you and my hair is your length, though dyed a browny blonde and without your gorgeous waves.

I've never had long hair before either, so have struggled a little with it.

However with the aid a various chunky clips, from Claires, I can now pin it up like a pro. I usually put it in a ponytail first, using an elasticated hair tie thingy, then twirl it round and round and clip it up. Get a widish plastic clip with big teeth. Enjoy!

andream34 · 14/06/2014 18:42

I have never experimented with hair colour, or had much re-styling done with my own (though that's about to change!), so I don't know if my comments will be of any use.

You have quite a pinkish tinge to your skin, and I think the current blonde shade highlights this too much. I agree with some posts already made, I would not go any darker than caramel, but honey blonde might be nice too for you. But do NOT let the grey grow through, you are a girl, you deserve to look as young as you can for as long as possible!

Length, I'd only take a couple of inches off it, you have lovely soft and wavy looking hair. I don't know about a fringe, have you ever thought about it?

nilbyname · 14/06/2014 19:04

op I'm so sorry about your glasses! It's probably the picture, hard to see them well.
