Eye make up making eyes watery

So this is a problem I've had on & off for a while, I love eyeshadows/ liner but I just don't think that they love me. I am careful not to get anything into my eye but pretty much half hour after applying a shadow or liner one of my yes will start watering. It won't look red or sore but just watering pretty much smudging & ruining what I've done as wel as leaving my skin around eyes quite sore by the end of the day.

Any ideas? Is it possible I have sensitive eyes and if so are there products that would be better to use? Or am I doing down thing wrong.

Have you started to suffer with dry eyes? That happened to me and suddenly I couldn't wear eye makeup without watery eyes. I take care to avoid any eye shadow containing bismuth as that immediately sets me off.

Try Clinique. All their products are allergy tested, no known allergens used, so are generally good for people with sensitivities.

Their eye makeup remover is the only one I can use.

Also try hylo-tear eye drops when you get a reaction.

Thank you, hadn't really tried Clinique before. Do they give small samples of shadows for you to try? I imagine their shadows aren't cheapest - also do they come in any exciting colours?

Thanks for the tip about the eye drops- are they the sort you can pick up in boots/ Superdrug

I get this. Clinique eyeshadows are nice as is their naturally glossy mascara. I think my problems are related to dry eyes (I used to be able to wear contact lenses but can't anymore because of my dry eyes - I don't know what causes it or how to fix it). I find a gel eyeliner (the Maybelline one is good - you don't need to spend ££ getting the Bobbi Brown or MAC one in IMO) is good as it really stays put and doesn't run into your eyes. I also find that the products I use on my face make a difference. Under eye concealers and highlighters like Touche Eclat are the worst for making my eyes stream. Oily eye make up removers really irritate my eyes too.

Lizard they can apply, or let you apply the eye makeup on counter and wear it for a day if they have no samples.

Talk to one of the consultants at your local counter and explain, they are generally really helpful and knowledgable.

They will refund or exchange anything that causes an allergic reaction too as far as I know. I've never had to do this but my DSis did and it was no problem at all.

I get hylo-tear on prescription but probably worth having a look in boots or the like.

It could be blepharitis. I get this, it's horrible. Buy an eye bag for blepharitis and use it 3 times a week when your eyes are ok and twice a day when they're dry and itchy.
Heat and gentle eye massage is essential.

I agree that Clinique is very good. I have a friend with very sensitive eyes and she only uses Clinique mascaras.
La Roche-Posay and Almay are also supposed to be very good brands for people with sensitive eyes.

There are loads of brands that claim they are 'hypoallergenic', but this term isn't regulated and therefore any brand can claim that they are 'hypoallergenic'.

Dirty brushes and old makeup can also cause irritation because of the bacteria.

I personally would be a bit worried about using the testers in stores on my face as I've seen loads of people using them/having them applied and the products not getting sanitised before and/or after.

I had this problem for years - although of course it may not be the same thing...

I stopped putting moisturiser near my eyes (just used serum) and learned how to use pressed powder. It immediately stopped. No watering or smudging.

I was always a bit dozy about applying make-up though!
