Short hair for convenience

I currently have hair past my bra strap, so quite long but am due to start a professional job at 8am everyday soon (so I can't look my usual scruff!). It currently takes around an hour to wash, dry and straighten and even then it doesn't stay looking neat and tidy.

Would you recommend having it cut short to make my mornings easier, and overall look smarter? I really like Frankie Sanfords hair and I have a good hairdresser so confident they wouldn't make it a disaster.

Any other suggestions are welcome though! Smile

I had mine chopped to shoulder length. It's much easier and I tie it back/put it up in a clip when it's a bit grimy/can't be arsed.

Maybe try that first?

InanimateCarbonRod · 10/06/2014 11:05

I did this and instantly regretted it. It took two years for my hair to grow long again. I suggest you try better products to keep it in place and only then if you're still not happy get it cut.

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 10/06/2014 11:08

That's a fear of mine inanimate I would hate to cut it off and regret it though I have been considering it a while. Do you have any products to recommend?

That's a good idea caspar I think my hairdresser would suggest that too.

I'm not overly keen on having my hair tied up tbh travel. It irritates me to feel a bobble/clips in. It's a good point though about time and money spent on maintenance.

So much to consider!

I have long hair, and wear it twisted up in a single ibis clip - it takes 2 minutes to do, and a blast of dry shampoo will make it nice after a couple of days. When I had short hair, it had to be washed and properly styled every day which was a PITA

InanimateCarbonRod · 10/06/2014 11:18

I use a volumising mousse when it's wet. No one in particular - whatever is on offer. Then I use Aussie conditioning anti frizz milk. It's fantastic. Second day I use a blast of dry shampoo and do a ponytail or plait. www.aussiehair.com/uk/products/dual-personality-anti-frizz-conditioning-milk-styling-cream.php

Have you tried a Brazilian blowdry (straightening treatment)? I had one done a while back and it saved me a lot of time straightening it and styling it in the morning, I could just dry and go. It wasn't that cheap but lasted around 3 months.

Also, invest in a properly decent hairdryer. I highly recommend Parlux. A good dryer makes a huge difference and saves time.

SavoyCabbage · 10/06/2014 11:42

I love my short hair. It's so easy to look after and I definitely look more "pulled together" than I did before.

I got it cut when I realised that I was putting it back every day.

CursiveLetters · 10/06/2014 11:49

Short hair isn't necessarily easier - if you straighten because your hair is frizzy you'll have the same problem. I agree with Brazilian blowdry suggestion, I LOVED mine. Really does look like a blowdry with no effort!

I had hair past my shoulders but had to tie it up for work.
I had a shorter layered cut but it didn't work with my hair.
So, I went for a crop (slight length on top still) . Yes it needs washed every day but I'm in the shower anyway,
It does need cut again ( I think it was cut 6 weeks ago , so there's the extra maintenence that way)

And it doesn't save money - I used to wash/condition once a week when it was longer. Now it's 7 times the shampoo/conditioner .

Nocomet · 14/06/2014 15:44

DD(16) wants to cut hers, we've agreed on long layers that won't plait, but will l

Nocomet · 14/06/2014 15:49

Sorry.
But it will still pony tail, messy bun and go in various 1/2 up styles.

She is a zero maintenance teen. If it needs, gel, straighteners or even a hair dryer it won't happen.

My own hair is impossible short. Wants washing everyday (which I can not be arsed with) and looks like a baisin regardless of it's official style.

Sicaq · 14/06/2014 20:53

When I had short hair, it took even longer! If your hair has a wave, I would not advise short-short if you're after low-maintenance. Would you think about a bob? Whack a bit of defrizzing mousse through and dry naturally?

Nocomet · 15/06/2014 01:15

Never heard of defrizzing moose, that sounds interesting.

Skinheadmermaid · 15/06/2014 01:21

Just tie it back. There are so many different styles you can do; side plait, french braid, high bun, ballerina bun, high pony tail etc etc

Skinheadmermaid · 15/06/2014 01:22

Why bother straightening it everyday? Scrunch a bit of salt spray/texture creme in it or plait it when its wet and have it wavy.

Sicaq · 15/06/2014 15:05

I think all mousse is defrizzing to some extent. Asda do a nice "weatherproof" one.
