Help! Scary hair colour I don't know what to do!

Oh my what a DISASTER!
I went to the hairdresser to get highlights but they bullied me into getting them really blond. Plus the front section is uneven and looks like I need my roots done!
Hair is just longer than my shoulders.
My original hair colour is dark brown. I've been dying it for 15 years as I'm going grey. I had about 5cm roots, and the real colour is a lot less red than my (old) hair dye.

So I thought highlights to merge in the grey & make it look nice.

No no no! It is colour 9 on top of my colour 4. Way too much contrast.

What can I do?

1- get a bleach kit from boots & tidy up the roots (risky I've never done that before)
2- dye it all back to brown & start again going grey
3- colour it all with a 7c ash, then roots with 4c so it's an ombré effect.

(I can't go back for fixing coz I got it on a deal & my friend works there, and I can't afford to go to a normal hairdresser. Plus I've never managed to get what I want at the hairdresser in all my years going there)

Please help me style & beauty mumsnetters!

If you dye over the bleached bits without putting gold/red back it will turn green.

Can you go short?

Justgotosleepnow · 10/06/2014 07:44

What? You are kidding me!
But what about this toner stuff? I had a 9 toner after the bleach was washed out.

What about if I put a 7 on all over, just a wee bit darker, would that work?

Have you got any pics of your hair?

Wishfulmakeupping · 10/06/2014 08:08

I'm a bit confused but would advise you go to a different colourist and see what they advise. I would imagine they will want to do an overall warmer colour to make it all match think its worth the expense now to get it properly sorted. And make sure you complain to the hairdresser that did this!

TessTackle · 10/06/2014 08:15

Go back! They legally are obliged to fix their cock up.
You don't even have to see the same stylist.

Do not do a home bleach or just whack a colour on. You'd need to do what we call a pre colour to add tone back to the bleached hair so a colour all over will take properly.

If you put a semi in an ash brown tone over the lot of it that's the safest thing to do. Your hair is probably quite chemically stressed at the moment so even the hairdresser might not be able to do much for a few weeks until it calms down. Also lots and lots of conditioner!

Thanks for all the info everyone.
It was the local training college. I thought I was getting gnvq level 3. Nope. My girl was a level 2. I wouldn't have gone ahead with the colour, just the cut if if known this!

All the more reason to go back and complain then!

Justgotosleepnow · 10/06/2014 08:26

She was really pushed for time and I was persuaded by her manager trainer to go for toner 9n instead of the 7 I had asked for.

The bit at the front is all bleached really, not just highlights. And 1.5 cm of roots.

Some of the colour is different colours, not sure why this would be.

Yes an ash semi over the top sounds good to me. Lots of coconut oil & no ghd I'm guessing.

But my friend works on reception & I'm embarrassed to go back and complain. I did say to the girl taking the money that I wasn't happy getting level 2.

I'm getting really upset about this.
I have ruined my hair Hmm

DO NOT PUT ASH BROWN OVER BLEACH.

If you are going to do this yourself get a permanent colour and go for something at least a .3 so something like a 5.3 in Loreal Excellence/
Preference. You need to put some warmth back in as it has been stripped from your hair during the bleaching process.

If you go for a Golden/Chestnut Brown it will look like a neutral brown but with subtle gold glints once you wash it dye off. It does look very red whilst processing but don't panic.

I would then start again with the grow out and go cold turkey but use Roux Tween times to help get through the badger. Having highlights doesn't work as they oxidise and turn brassy.

TessTackle · 10/06/2014 10:08

Seconding the no ash brown! Used to be a hairdresser.
You will get green hair

Justgotosleepnow · 10/06/2014 10:50

What about an 8n to make it less light would that be ok?
I'm thinking of naturtint

Are you just going to go over the bleached sections?

Neutral base alone won't cut it over bleach.

If you are going to go over it all the 6N will not have enough peroxide strength to lift the already coloured hair if it is darker.

Naturtint have a habit of going really dark and then washing out quickly.

What level is the majority of your hair?

Justgotosleepnow · 10/06/2014 11:34

Well it was 4 or 5n but the highlights were nearly a whole head of hair so the top is really more than half highlighted. I want the highlights to be less bright, more brown, so the regrowth isn't so bad. And not orangey at all.

Milmingebag · 10/06/2014 11:42

Use a level 5 then but do go for .3 or above. If you go for a chestnut/golden brown it will look very neutral as the blonde will drink up the warmth but it won't look flat. It won't look orange.Level 4 will be too dark and may turn black.

It will lighten up a lot too after a couple of washes but will be toned nicely.

HTH
