I'm trying to help my mum, which is easier said than done as I am incredibly un-stylish. She is mid-70s, slim, and needs an outfit for my brother's wedding in the summer. what kind of thing is fashionable in that respect?
I live a long way from her so haven't been able to actually go shopping with her yet, but we are planning it for a few week's time. She has already tried Jaques Verte and looked in House of Fraser and John Lewis with my dad - but I suspect they have missed the ideal outfit in one of those places.
Fashionable people, please help!

Or these

Sooty would let me upload anymore photos. There is also a style guide on the phase 8 website

Can you give us a bit more to go on? What sort of things does your mum normally like? Do you know her shape? size? colouring? budget?

Poledra · 09/06/2014 09:08

My granny always said that, as the mother of the groom, you wore beige and pearls, and kept your mouth shut Grin

tethersend · 09/06/2014 09:08

Does she want a dress or a dress and jacket style thing?

I like this with A Proper Hat.

X post Poledra Grin

I think she's more likely to go for a skirt, top and jacket ensemble. She wants a hat, which I tried to talk her out of, but she was adamant! She's very traditional.
Budget-wise, I think about £300 tops for clothes (not in chat and shoes).

Tethers, that is nice. What's your opinion on an older lady in a knee length skirt? I think she'd want tights on.

Just going to look at Phase 8...

Wallis always used to be very good at Mother Of The [Person Getting Wed] outfits: www.wallis.co.uk/?geoip=home

I like traditional wedding outfits, TBH. Hats, jackets, the full shebang. I'm with your MIL Grin

Knee length skirts are fine, just get some thin tights if she feels self conscious about her legs.

What size/colouring is she?

Floisme · 09/06/2014 10:37

I can't link at the moment, I'm afraid but from what you've said, I would second Phase 8 and also try Hobbs, Jaegar, Kaliko, Coast, LK Bennett, Damsel in a Dress, Fenn Wright Mason, Planet.
East might be worth a look - not sure if they would be structured enough for your mum's taste but they do good colours and they think about things like arm coverage.
Monsoon can be quite good for traditional weddingy stuff for all ages.

Knee length is fine, provided your mum is comfortable with it - lower legs tend to hold their shape very well.

Floisme · 09/06/2014 11:19

And she must definitely wear a hat. I can't wait for my son to get married so I can buy the most mahoosive hat going. Pity he's still only 16 Grin

Crutchlow35 · 09/06/2014 18:47

Get her appointments with the john lewis and house of fraser personal shoppers. They are free.

crazybutterflylady · 09/06/2014 18:59

I was going to say the same as Crutchlow. My DM did this for my wedding (at John Lewis) and came away very happy. I'd advise going with her though! If you have time.
