Growing out a short crop

I have a short crop just now - like this kind of length www.electric-hair.com/public/images/NEWS/cropEmmaWatson.jpg (though sadly I am nowhere near as pretty as Emma Watson).

I am getting bored. And contemplating growing it. But I have no idea what to aim for during the growing phase, iyswim. One reason I want to grow it is that it is getting more and more dark mousy colour, where it used to be blond, but it's currently too short to really be any good for highlights (too expensive given that they are gone in 2-3 haircuts).

Any ideas on cuts whilst I grow it out?

Funnily enough, I was thinking the same thing yesterday! I have the same kind of crop and my hair is naturally wavy so it has a tendency to sit around my head like a fluffy cloud if it gets even slightly long.
How about taking the layers slightly longer and seeing how that works?

I've done this. There will be a certain amount of teeth-gritting needed, I'm afraid, and kirby grips will be your friends.

What worked for me was getting the back trimmed while it grew, so I didn't get a mullet, until it was the same length (more or less) all around, in a very short bob almost, then growing it out from there. Scalp massages in the shower will help stimulate more growth, and I found taking pre-natals made a definite difference. If you have any natural wave, don't comb it out as it helps disguise wonkiness.

If it is a crop though you could just pop a lighter colour on and have more layers put in for texture and muss it up with wax. I personally think the Emma Watson pixie is a bit skullcap.

If you want to grow it out painlessly you will need regular trims to grow the canopy down but keep it short around the ears and nape of neck or the mullet will be upon you.

I shaved my head 5 months ago and am growing it out.

Agree with the other posters about keeping the back trimmed. I had a big old mullet until I had mine cut at the weekend. I now have a bob shape albeit a very short one.

I'm going full 90's chick at the minute and using kirby grips to twist and clip the front off my face until it grows sufficiently.

And I'm never ever having short hair again!

I'm in the process of doing the same thing with my crop, pixie with a heavy fringe. (I love it, I'm just a little bored of it now). My hairdresser just trims the back and lightens the layers when I go in to get rid of the dreaded mullet.

I'm hoping to have a graduated bob (short at the back, long at the front) by July/August. At the moment I have a crop with longish tufty bits by my ears.

Oh and you have to be prepared that after the first few mullet trims it will look quite short. I was a bit Hmm the first time as it looked like I had got it re-cropped but it's the only way of getting it to grow evenly at the back.

Thank you all. Sounds like I need to steel myself for a few months of 'aarghhhh' hair days!
