So I'm looking at getting a breast enlargement...

And I found loads of older threads on here about it-but not anything recent.

I have NC, because a few of my family members are on here and I haven't told anybody about this, apart from DH and my Mum.

I've been contemplating this decision for about 6-7 years and haven't gone for it. I've done a tonne of research and still, I know I want it done.

I'm scared of surgery, I've never had a general before. Also I keep talking myself out of it along the lines of 'It's surgery I don't need', 'It's selfish/narcissistic', 'I like other parts of my body', 'It's expensive' etc etc. But still deep down I know that as I age I'll be more regretful if I DON'T, than if I DO.

I actually really like my body apart from my boobs. My boobs sap my confidence-they're not particularly saggy so not sure I'd need an uplift-but they're small and not a nice shape-kind of like two pointy bits of flesh stuck to me-my nipples point downwards.

I've arrived at the decision that life's too short to be unhappy when I can do something about it. It's small-risk surgery and I've always put money and effort into things that help others-I know I'll feel confident and less body-conscious, and dare to wear clothes I know look crap at the moment.

DH wouldn't care less if I didn't have it done-all he says is although he likes my breasts as they are, he sees what I mean, and he wants me to be happy.

Anyway the reason I've posted here is , I'm confused on where to go for it. I know quite a few women who've had it done and they've all gone to mainstream cosmetic surgeons (MYA, Transform etc) but on researching, a lot of say is to go to a plastic surgeon or hospital, not cosmetic.

Has anybody had it done? Can anybody give me any advice?

I am more worried about the GA than anything else!

I'm in the NW-can travel for the right surgeon.

Thank you!

Watching with interest, I'm beginning to think about having mine done, dc2 is a year now, I only managed to fb this one for 8 weeks, but I've got boobs like spaniel ears, I've lost all the baby weight and a little more, the rest of my body looks great, but there's nothing that can be done about my boobs other than surgery.

Interestingly, no one questioned my desire to get back a pre-baby arse/waist/legs, but wanting pre-baby boobs again is a feminist issue or a counselling issue...

I wouldn't know where to start with "do your research", is there places to find local hospitals that do it? Work backwards from there?

SeekingCosmeticSurgery · 08/06/2014 19:08

Something funny happened when I told my Mum I wanted a breast enlargement. Annoyingly, even in her late sixties, my Mum has big, round, breasts-they don't sag and are firm (not that I've felt them, we've discussed it!) and so has my Sister. Envy

Anyway my Mum was saying I didn't need one, and I was being silly etc-I was trying to explain what my boobs were like, and was wearing a halterneck top with no bra so I said 'ah sod it, see for yourself!' And I lifted my top.

She looked taken aback , and Confused and then said 'Er, actually , yeh. Can see what you mean-go for it'!

Happy to have been of (possible) help Smile

SeekingCosmeticSurgery · 08/06/2014 19:17

Thanks YellowStripe. Really informative- How long before you could do 'normal' things?
I never put weight on on my boobs-if I go bigger I just get a beer belly Blush

I hate having my nipples touched anyway, so no worries there!

Mary I think It's because breast operations just throw up images in people's minds of glamour models and 'airheadedness' , and vanity? Other cosmetic surgeries don't have that 'reputation' ?

I had a breast enlargement 5 years ago. I had it done in a local private clinic, did lots of research before hand, met the plastic surgeon etc and had absolutely no problems at all.

However, I am sure you have heard all this before but just be very sure it is definitely for you. I have never really been happy with my breasts even since I had the procedure and sometimes I feel like I just wasted a huge amount of money!
I know others who have had breast enlargements and the majority are very happy with them for me it just wasn't the result I was expecting I guess.

SeekingCosmeticSurgery · 08/06/2014 19:34

Sorry to hear that, pretty... Sounds as if you did make an informed decision, though-so even more of a shame that you weren't happy with the results! I'd be gutted if that happened to me.

This is the first time I've discussed it openly. I've found a local hospital online that I've never heard of before-but I'm a bit put off by the price, It's very cheap!

OP posts:
YellowStripe · 08/06/2014 19:37

SCS - yes, even now if I mention I've had an enlargement, people seem to expect something of Katie Price proportions.

I think I had either 350 or 400 ml implants but the consultant (and a nurse) were saying I could carry off a further 50ml. However, for me it wasn't about the size, more the appearance. Mine had sagged almost flat against my chest, with the nipples at the lowest point; I just wanted them to be fuller and tbh I think I would have preferred them slight smaller than what they ended up as, but he needed to use that size implant to get the nipple into the right place iyswim (without messing around, cutting nipple stalk and repositioning etc).

SeekingCosmeticSurgery · 08/06/2014 19:40

I really am perturbed at the thoughts of nipples on 'stalks' :D

But yes I know what you mean!I'm a b cup now but it is more the shape I'm concerned about.

OP posts:
WitchWay · 08/06/2014 19:49

I would have considered breast surgery if my boobs had ended up with downward-pointing nipples. Fortunately, although my small breasts are even smaller & softer, the shape is still OK & the nipples point in the right direction.

Make sure you research your surgeon thoroughly then go for it Grin

I am thinking this guy is sounding promising...

Thanks witchway

Why am I so scared of GA. I'm scared of not waking up and/or waking up during the surgery. I know this is irrational. ...

OP posts:
Prettyinbeige · 08/06/2014 19:53

The results of the actual procedure are great. When my boobs were smaller I was very conscious and always tried to hide and cover them as much as I could. Now there are bigger (went from a B to a DD) I still feel I am trying to cover and hide as much as I did before. I think for me I should have tried harder to be happy with what I already had. Sounds silly I know.

I wouldn't say that cheap necessarily means bad, just do your research. Most places will let you come in, speak to staff and have a look around. You can usually get a feel for a place by doing that. Also try and speak to other who have had procedures with the clinic you are considering.

HayBale · 08/06/2014 19:54

nc'd

I had this done about 14 years ago - on just one side to correct a 2 cup size difference.

Surgeon was a colleague of my Dad's (also a doctor) so I knew that he would be fine. (Surgeon was a Consultant in the NHS and I had it done in a private hospital.)

Implant I had was 50% silicon and 50% saline. Had a valve put in my armpit so they could over-inflate it and then take it some out a few weeks later, so the breast would naturally "droop" (so more teardrop rather than semi-hemispherical shape.)

I am a 38F and you would never guess one had some help from looking - Scar is hidden underneath. Was also able to breasteed.

One thing to note - as I have had one done and not the other, so can compare, is that you lose sensation - for years it was numb, and sensation in the nipple is not that pleasurable - sorry for TMI. not sure if that is the case for other women.

HayBale · 08/06/2014 19:56

My dad is an anaesthetist - you are monitored every second you are under and then a nurse stays with you in recovery until you come round.

Sunnyfeet · 08/06/2014 19:59

I went from an A cup to a D cup, and even thought that sounds like a big difference, it's actually less of an increase than you think, and they look totally in proportion with the rest of me. I told very few people, and (to the best of my knowledge) no one has ever guessed, as I generally wear modest tops. I wish I'd done it years ago, but I couldn't afford it.

mulberrybag · 08/06/2014 19:59

yellow stripe can I ask you about what happens to them long term ? I read recently that they must be removed in ten years or so, which totally put me off even day dreaming about them. I deep down disagree with messing with my body but at 35 i have wrecked boobs from breastfeeding two babies who are now 7+ . i have a small frame and the skin where my boobs used to be is now boobless and just awful saggy skin. its a total confidence wrecker. really gets me down if I dwell on it. I just dont know if I could ever tell my daughter I'd been vain enough to risk ga & poss complications for the way I look iyswim. sorry to hijack

MaryWestmacott · 08/06/2014 20:02

How cheap is cheap? I'm just at the start of debating if this is right for me, and I had in my head a sum around £8-10k, but my initial investigations are suggesting anything between £3-6k. That all seems a bit cheap to me...

RiojaHaze · 08/06/2014 20:09

I had mine done in 2004 at Transform in London. It cost me £5k, I had tubular breasts that I had hated since I was old enough to be aware. I told myself that to prove I really wanted them I would save to pay rather than get a loan and that's what I did!

It was the best thing I ever did. I've always been confident but it just made me a bit more self assured.

It didn't hurt, I was home the next day but bizarrely I was worried most about having the stitches out! No need though, just felt like a little tickle.

I've breastfed 3 children, they don't look as good as they originally did but with a little bit of sag look really natural.

Re shelf life, my surgeon told me he had ladies who'd had the same ones in for 18 years and I'm still not at the point where mine need to be changed.

YellowStripe · 08/06/2014 21:07

Mulberrybag - quite wrongly my head is deeply in the sand about that - it seemed so far away when I had them done.

YellowStripe · 08/06/2014 21:10

Oh, and my twat of an exh informed our daughters of my op after we separated.

SeekingCosmeticSurgery · 09/06/2014 11:48

pretty so you feel like there was something else making you unhappy with your body? I hope you have acheived a good self-image now.

I think because I have 'waited' years to come to the conclusion fully, that I want them-now I have-I'm becoming very impatient!I just want to find a clinic and get it done. I know I can't, though.

Transform or MYA are out from what others have said.
haybale I've never heard of an armpit valve. I think I'd want the teardrop ones, too but I've heard they're more dangerous..Then again I heard that from my friend who has round ones-and she may not be the most reliable source of info!

And thnaks for the GA reassurance.

There's a clinic near where my Mum lives, that I found on google, and they only offer local anaesthetic. I'm a bit put off them because of that I don't know why, and also because the website isn't very detailed.

That was £3K, marywestmacott. They aren't as expensive as I originally thought, either although I know you can put an infinate price tag on them.
rioja that's a great story!

yellowstripe what a dick !
Hope their reaction wasn't too bad.
Angry

Okay this is the clinic near my parent's house. There are no mentions of surgeons, no GA, no prices on the ssite, and one of the surgeons got into trouble a while back for practicing whilst suspended. Is that enough to put me off...

I wouldn't completely discount Transform - just do your homework on the different surgeons.

SeekingCosmeticSurgery · 09/06/2014 12:26

Thanks YellowStripe I'm in a bit of a tiz here-yes of course It's the surgeons not the company, that I should be careful of.

This seems unbelievably cheap to me,but I'm going to research the surgeons who do it nonetheless
