Woud you buy a product just because it was endorsed by a 'celebrity'?

I have just read that the model Lily Cole has 'designed' some trainers.
This has annoyed me as my daughter is currently undertaking a four year design course after which if shes lucky she may get a low paid design course ( or have to do an unpaid internjship). Lily Cole will probably earn more for this than my daughter will in 20 years.

However this must be finacially viable for the company involved in increased sales etc. So would you buy a beauty/ fashion product endorsed by a celeb? If so why what do you feel you will get out of It?

I stopped using L'Oriel because they used Cheryl Cole. Dreadful woman.

MissMilbanke · 08/06/2014 17:13

I wouldn't but there again I am old, I just don't get it.

Having said that if it were Mo Farrah or the like designing the trainers I might be tempted, as they could make me run faster Grin

But a pretty face… Nah

I remember walking past a hairdressers (Regis I think it was ) I was going to call in and that whatsername… caroline flack was their face

I just walked on by and have never been in to this day.

Mintyy · 08/06/2014 17:14

Never, ever, ever.

CoconutAmericano · 08/06/2014 17:17

God no. If 20 women here swore that a certain product was brilliant i may be tempted to try it. A celebrity endorsing a product would do nothing for me.

UncrushedParsley · 08/06/2014 17:19

Nope. :)

NorbertDentressangle · 08/06/2014 17:20

haha MissMilbanke, I couldn't believe that Caroline Flack was the face of a hair company either - she has the most awful scraggy, bad condition hair!

To answer your question though OP I buy what I like and want regardless of whether or not anyone endorses it.

I can imagine situations where a particular celeb might actually put me off buying something but could never imagine buying something purely because of an endorsement.

It must be frustrating to see someone like your daughter struggle to get her ideas and designs noticed when a random famous face earns megabucks for nowt (as I guess most of them have no part in the actual design!)

gaggiagirl · 08/06/2014 17:21

What coconut said!!!

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/06/2014 17:26

No I'd be less likely to. Have no wish to be patronised.

BackforGood · 08/06/2014 17:27

No, but it's more subtle than that, isn't it.
There's a huge advertising industry that puts a lot of research into this kind of thing, and, if it didn't work, they wouldn't keep doing it.

PS Who is Lily Cole?

Smartiepants79 · 08/06/2014 17:28

No.
I might be more interested in a 'cause' or charity if someone I respected got involved but that would be more to do with raising the profile.

Thumbwitch · 08/06/2014 17:30

No. But I have no interest in Sleb "culture".

DurhamDurham · 08/06/2014 17:32

It's more likely to put me off to be honest.

I'm very cynical and think that the slab has usually had very little to do with the development of a product but just has their name stamped on it.

I HATE slab perfumes and aftershaves with a passion Grin

DurhamDurham · 08/06/2014 17:33

Ahem sleb not slab!! Grin

No

botanicbaby · 09/06/2014 00:41

nope wouldn't buy anything endorsed by a celebrity and nor would I buy any beauty product endorsed by India Knight.

princessdave · 09/06/2014 11:37

I'm with rideronthestorm - won't touch L'Oreal products because of Cheryl Cole.

Agree with theawfuldaughter though that Lily Cole does seem a good fit with Veja. Must have all read the same article in Marie Claire (or was it Red? I forget)!

Milmingebag · 09/06/2014 11:45

India Knight is irritating.

VanGogh · 09/06/2014 11:46

I actively avoid products that are endorsed by slebs I think poorly of.

I wouldn't buy anything because of a sleb endorsement.

I'm much more likely to listen to friends, colleagues, MNers and take a decision based on that.

SuperFlyHigh · 09/06/2014 12:06

Davina and her gushing over Garnier skin/haircare products I can do without thanks very much - though I do like some of Garnier's cleansing stuff.

same with Claudia Schiffer. sorry love but you don't colour your hair (I don't think so) as stated in your promo blurb I read in a magazine the other day.

Onesleeptillwembley · 09/06/2014 23:57

I feel that if they need to use a 'sleb' to endorse then it's probably shit ant they're trying to market to the thickos and obviously will avoid.

specialsubject · 10/06/2014 10:19

of course not.

I would say 'does anyone actually buy things because they think it will make them look/smell like (insert name of pointless person)' - but clearly many do! Scary!

as for Lily Cole - she is proof that you may be quite intelligent, but there is nothing like modelling to make people assume that you are an air-headed, spoilt fool. And I don't imagine she really knows how to make shoes.

MarshaBrady · 10/06/2014 10:28

No. It puts me off.

I like VB stuff but, ignoring the outlandish prices, that it's VB makes me rethink. Not because it's her but because I want a someone who designs. Although the bags are nice.

And at the more gimmicky throw a name at something end, not interested at all.

Deathraystare · 10/06/2014 15:10

Nope. Especially not L'oreal for the above reasons - massively hate the Cheryl Cole creature.

It always amuses me in magazines when slebs are asked for beauty tips and hey presto! they mention the creams/make up they are endorsing!!!!
