In my 40s, combination skin but is starting to feel a bit tighter. Used to hardly ever get spots but now seem to be getting hormonal ones. Looking for a cleanser and a moisturiser and want to keep things as simple as possible.

Am wondering about:

Cethaphil
Avene
La Roche Posay

Anybody use? Any recs?

Thank you.

Ooh, that's not good, Remus - can you contact those three companies and ask for samples?

I use the LRP creamy cleanser and I use a muslin to get it off. I have similar skin to you and I prefer to use a gentle cream or oil cleanser (as opposed to a foaming wash off one). I recommend the LRP Effaclar Duo as a moisturiser if you're getting spots. Avene is nice too but I don't think I've tried the cleanser.

Just visited the Avene site and it says Boots will be doing 3 for 2 from June 12th - so think I'll wait a few days!

Reporting back.

It's on 3 for 2 in Boots now and I have bought:

the Really Gentle cleanser
a light factor 20 moisturiser
one of the water spray cans

The cleanser seems lovely - really light and pleasant to use. It's a sort of gel texture, rather than a runny milk texture, which I'm pleased about.

The moisturiser is only a tiny pot and again seems light and pleasant - I wonder if it might be too light, actually. You don't seem to get much for the price.

The water spray is really lovely - I am going to buy a couple of the tiny ones to keep in my handbag!

The Avene water sprays were brilliant during my 2 pregancies (and hot summers). Colleagues thought it amusing, though, that I would spend so much on water when "a plant sprayer and tap water" would do!!

I use the Avene mineral water spray - always thought it was a waste of money until I tried it, it does calm and soothe skin.

I've got chronically oily skin and use the La Roche Posay Effaclar range, it's fabulous stuff as far as I'm concerned!

I use the the purifying cleansing gel, clarifying lotion and sebo-controlling moisturiser.

I sometimes use the odd Vichy Normaderm product as well. They do a nice scrub which I like to use occasionally.

LRP Effaclar duo is fab stuff. I've run out of it (I actually cut the top off and scooped the remnants out) so will go and do the 3 for 2. It is brilliant for that week in the month when the hormonal spots come-a-calling. I'm nearly at the end of the Avene Cleanance wash- now I am tempted by the Effaclar wash and some Vichy. These French pharmacy brands are just fantastic and knock the spots off higher end skin (in my humble opinion).

Day two and still liking the Avene stuff a lot. I need something for night time though - is there anything in the Avene range which people would recommend? I get paid at the weekend and fancy buying something else whilst it's still on offer!
