Anybody use Biotin (& a bit of waffle about other supplements)

Friend recommended me biotin because I have horrible fine straggly, 'doesn't grow' hair, however I have heard that It's bad for your skin, is this true?Has anybody ever used it and have any experiences to share?

I've always had fine hair-but when I was young it was silky and nice-then I had it cut as a teen and dyed it repeatedly and now It's dry, brittle and even finer than before :(

Also, I take L-lysine regularly, and I have always had very good, flawless skin (count our blessings, eh?) and then a few months after starting L-lysine I began to break out-but only on ONE Side of my face.

It was only after hearing somebody say about Biotin being bad for causing pizza-face symptoms that I thought maybe It's the L-lysine that's caused my breaking out..But why only on one side? I can't think of anything else. I was blaming DP because that's the side I rest on his chest when we sleep-but I think I was being a bit mean, there.

Sorry for waffly post, in a rush but really needed to ask this question before I go out :)

No idea about skin, but I used to feed it to my horse and it did wonders for his hooves! Grin

Biotin is one of the supplements in Perfectils Hair, skin and nail products. There are many others similar, I think Vitabiotics do one too. I doubt they would put an ingredient in that wasn't good for skin, given it's one area that they're trying to improve.
I've been using it and it hasn't affected my skin at all but then again, it is quite hardy Grin

Haha my hooves are already splendid, hopefully !

Thanks both. Going to give it a go 'cause I'm SICK of my hair.

I take it, have been for about 3 1/2 months. I think it can take about 6 months to make a noticeable difference to hair because of 'hair growing phases' or some such.
It's defo doing something though, my skin, nails and hair are better than than they were at Christmas. This is one thing I am going to persevere with.

HexBramble · 06/06/2014 19:28

I'm still in early stages of biotin (2 weeks in) and I'm unsure. My hair sounds similar to yours, OP.

I've noticed a few rogue pimples here and there but nothing shocking...

...but.

Last night, I had a really sharp pain inside my nostril - like a sore. This morning, my whole nose tip is red and sore and starting to swell. I think I have a boil starting and it's hurting like you wouldn't believe. Can't even blow my nose.

Could be related.

Cod be klaxon time Sad

HexBramble · 06/06/2014 19:29

Cod?

COULD.

Sunflower49 · 07/06/2014 09:45

Wildthong thanks-that sounds promising!
Yes hair grows in cycles, doesn't it...I bought some today

Hex poor you!Good luck with sorting that out. I've sorted boils out before with hot flannel compress and LOTS of salt water (seasalt) but It's so unpleasant!

Thanks!
Sorry to de-rail OP but my nose is bloody painful. Even brushing it with a tissue makes my eyes water in agony.

This is going to be a boil and a half. Just hope it's not the biotin Confused

I have ridiculously fine, really long hair. It didn't recover after pregnancy, so it is interesting to read about biotin. ATM I am taking some skin, hair & nail supplements, however last time they brought me out in a huge rash!

I currently wear extensions, I have half a head microbead weave & strangely enough apart from it being so fine, my hair has never been in such good, healthy condition.

sulee · 08/06/2014 00:38

Ah-that's interesting! I've been taking H&B biotin for a couple of weeks as I heard they were good for hair(too early for any results yet), and

have had some horrid break-outs of spots for the first time in years. I think I will stop for a while to see if there is a link!

Coumarin · 08/06/2014 02:15

Biotin and other b vitamins taken as supplements always break me out in spots.

Best vitamins for skin, I've found personally, are zinc and vitamin C.

Someone on here mentioned their Dr recommending they take selenium after they suffered hair loss.

Coumarin · 08/06/2014 02:17

Also eating lots of protein and taking fish oil does wonders for both skin and hair.

netty36 · 08/06/2014 02:48

I tried biotin, a large dose to be fair, and it made me have break through bleeding in my monthly cycle. I stopped taking it and the bleeding stopped. I googled this and other people have experienced this. So be careful. I now take 4x1000mg high strength fish oil a day and this has helped my skin, hair and nails... And mental clarity.

Sulphur is suppose to be best for hair also ergothionine not too sure about human supplements as had great results with horses using TNS formulas containing mushroom extract
They do have human supplements just not used them so can't comment on them
