Less is more with skin care

Is it true do you think that less is more when it comes to skin care?

One person's less is another person's more so hard to say.

What do you mean by 'less' exactly?

I agree in part but it depends on your skin type and if you are looking at anti-ageing or a teen skin.

I watch QVC where they have the French brands like Decleor and Gatineau and I would have to spend a full day putting all the products on my skin that they recommend Confused
There's the cleansers, the exfoliants, the eye cream/eye serum , neck cream, the oils, goodness knows how many different moisturisers.

I cleanse (hot cloth method) at night and apply my cream or a gel (Collagen, Vit E , Vit C depending on what I need)

In the morning, wash off non-soap cleanser and a serum.

End of. No toner. No masks, don't need scrubs because I use the cloths.

But even I get drawn into the new products "What if that's what I've been looking for all my life, and I've wasted years using XYZ"?

I've simplified my routine as I have got older. Partly due to trying to cut back on spending a fortune on 'miracle' potions that don't work, and partly because my skin has become more sensitive (slight rosaecea, dryer) and doesn't react well to using loads of different products.

I use Superdrug Vit E hot cloth cleanser at night, then the Vit E night cream. If my skin feels very dry, I massage in a few drops of Weleda almond facial oil before the night cream.

I wash my face with warm water and a soft flannel in the morning, then use Vit E moisturiser, and in this weather, a factor 50 sunscreen on top. Sometimes use a few dots of eye cream if my eye area looks dry.

I have stopped using face scrubs, as they irritate my skin. I use Chanel hydramax moisture mask once every 1-2 weeks. Thats it. Quite simple.

In the morning I just splash water on my face and then use some some serum and moisturiser.

In the evening however I use the following:

hot cloth cleanse
liquid exfoliator
serum
facial oil
night cream

My skin is the best it's ever been.

Definitely. I used to love fancy skincare stuff but my skin was still pretty rubbish. I now use Bodyshop aloe vera cleansing lotion, Nivea (thick old-fashioned one in blue pot) at night and Astral (like granny used to use) in the day. Skin's better than with the fancy stuff. I still need to drink more water though...

I don't exactly find that less is more, but I have definitely found that nothing I put on my skin makes as much difference as what I put in my body. Clean living makes for clean skin - depressing but true (for me, anyway).

Bonsoir · 06/06/2014 13:04

Yes, less is definitely more! I have cupboards full of French skincare - my DP sells the stuff in his shops, gets bagfuls of freebies at press launches and supplier meetings and brings them home to me Smile.

I obstinately bought a Clarisonic (chez his main competitor Hmm) and think it is fabulously simple! Just whack on a little cream after cleansing and hey presto!

Greenstone · 06/06/2014 13:26

Ah, it really depends on your skin and age. But in general, yes, I think that a lot of women are making their skin more sensitive by loading on product when a simpler routine would work better.

Sunshine makes my skin a million times better, for example: clearer, glowier, zaps away the acne. It's a crying shame because I have fair freckled skin that will go wrinkly in the sun if I let it. :(

What works is different for everyone, but I would always say to those with acne to stop buying harsh stripping anti-bac stuff because that shit ruins your skin.

I'm getting my best results with very little at the moment. Avocado oil, honey, muslin cloths, hot water, a day cream with good spf and some lip balm. I use a face mask every week or two.

OneLittleLady · 06/06/2014 13:34

I use very little. Superdrug Vit E hot cloth cleanser morning and night followed by Vit E intense moisture cream and sometimes the eye cream. I exfoliate once a week with the Vit E exfoliating cream and that's all I do. I have pretty good skin with the odd hormonal breakout, no wrinkles or fine lines. Seems for me that less really is more.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 06/06/2014 13:37

I wash my face with a facewash in the morning, eye make up remover wipe and baby lotion.

I may use a baby wipe at night if I can be bothered.

I'm waiting for this to bite me on the bum but less is more might apply!

Lottapianos · 06/06/2014 14:02

'I have definitely found that nothing I put on my skin makes as much difference as what I put in my body'

Completely agree with this. The things that make my skin look the best are not products but lifestyle stuff - eating avocados, eating almonds, using olive oil on salad every day, lots of veg, cut right down on sugar including booze, drink loads of water, get loads of sleep. Exercise. And stopping smoking.

My skincare routine is simple too:
oil cleanse with sunflower oil and a flannel in the evening
followed by a few drops of sunflower oil to moisturise
thin layer of Nivea (dark blue pot) before bed

morning:
clean face with warm flannel
Superdrug serum
SPF 50 if it's sunny
Astral day cream
Then make up
