pre-empting him popping the question when we are on holiday in a couple of weeks time, he's already said he'd want me to choose

I have already looked on not on the high street, nothing that blew me away.

I like opals even if its bad luck, something fairly chunky- my hands aren't delicate. Not fussed on the metal. I would like something vaguely traditional too though.

Im sure you lot must have some suggestions...

Etsy.

HowsTheSerenity · 04/06/2014 22:51

Second that. Etsy is fab.

Antique shop. For all jewellery! Find one that you trust and you'll spend a fortune but save a fortune!!

expatinscotland · 04/06/2014 22:54

Antique shop.

Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. They will make to your design.

Hemswell is great for vintage jewellery- good prices, too.

It's in the middle of nowhere, though Grin

If you want something made, I second Etsy- otherwise, now is the time to trawl some jewellery degree shows and commission something.

Lots of independent jewellers in the Lanes in Brighton, if you're in the SE.

emsyj · 04/06/2014 23:03

My antique engagement ring was from Berganza in Hatton Garden - they have lots of antique jewellery from different periods.

Theoldhag · 04/06/2014 23:07

I second the lanes in brighton, mine came from one of the 30 plus jewellers there. There are a mixture of antique, new, one offs etc. or you could look up a local artisan and have one made to your specifications?

bluewisteria · 04/06/2014 23:20

Mine was from Berganza too! Gorgeous shop!
Don't overlook auction houses... A bargain to be had there
Congratulations!

DF had one made in Birmingham, they just pulled out a draw of rubies, she chose one and they set it in her choice of ring.

She was a student and hers was a pink Ruby with six little diamonds (the same in fact as my blue topaz one), but I'm certain they would cater for all budgets. She certainly had more fun than just buying a high street one.

I'd definitely go to The Lanes in Brighton or the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Etsy is a good choice but I'd find what you like irl, then shop for it on Etsy to see if you can get it cheaper iyswim? I think trying before you buy (for heaviness, the feel of it etc) is important for something you'll be wearing all the time.

BringMeTea · 05/06/2014 08:03

Got mine in the Lanes in Brighton too. Lots of options there.

Mines Art Deco, bought from a little second hand jewellers in town. Love! Otherwise, have you seen Rust? They make gorgeous rings. Wish we had got our wedding rings from there
