Shaped like a brick and need a dress

Just that really. Need a dress for DB's wedding and I am literally a brick on legs. Large size 14, 38B, 5'7", slimmish legs and podgy tum. My waist and hips really don't have much difference, maybe an inch?

Anybody have any experience of dressing my odd shape? If any of you fabulous fashionistas have any ideas, I'd love to hear them Smile

Yes actually I can see that that might work. I'm wary of Boden I guess cos I seem to spend more time returning to them than buying from them haha. I may well try that one. Thank you Smile

this is dressier and might be worth a shot as the waistline sits higher.

Bargain too!

I have a friend with a similar body type. I always think she looks best in flapper-style clothes (eg, flowy and with a dropped waist.

autumnsmum · 04/06/2014 08:24

Interestingly I have a rectangle shape and I avoid flowing clothes as I look completely shapeless

Milmingebag · 04/06/2014 12:51

The Boden jersey maxi looks hideous. The material is cheap so it looks sheer in places and too voluminous in others like you are six months pregnant. The band under the bust comes down right to the bottom of the rib cage and then the material pouffs out so not only do you get a maternity line but it diminishes any bust too.

Another clothing retailer who is compromising on material quality. Such a shame as I have dresses from them that are really good value and have been worn a lot.

travel I love that mint velvet dress

hamptoncourt · 04/06/2014 13:14

dibbler you just cost me £149 as I just had to buy the Damsel in a Dress dress for a wedding I am going to even though I had already bought a dress for it but this one is much better

whispers Thank you!!

CMOTDibbler · 04/06/2014 13:36

Hope you love it Hampton - dh picked it off the rack for me and I was Hmm but it looks amazing on, and the print gives me a waist and curvy bum

hamptoncourt · 04/06/2014 13:50

Excellent. The problem I sometimes have with dresses is that they are too short in the body for me and the waistline is around the bottom of my ribs, although I am only 5ft5!!

I am hoping that this will be a better fit.

I had better get some nude/blue shoes now I suppose!!

CMOTDibbler · 04/06/2014 14:08

I'm 5'9, and the waistline is fine. My shoes were from M&S

hamptoncourt · 04/06/2014 14:19

Did you get nude or blue ( or something else?) Show me the shoes!!!! I probably need a shrug too!!

I have a bright blue Cambridge satchel so that is sorted.

CMOTDibbler · 04/06/2014 14:27

I got these, though I did contemplate my faithful Next nude peeptoes

hamptoncourt · 04/06/2014 14:38

Lovely colour. I feel the cold really badly though so rarely wear sandals. I will have a look around.

CMOTDibbler · 04/06/2014 14:45

They have some closed toe blue suede as well

hamptoncourt · 04/06/2014 15:35

I have ordered these but I feel bad for hijacking fairlys thread.

Sorry Fairly and I hope you find the perfect dress. House of Fraser would be a good starting point. Reiss also have some lovely flowing dresses right now.Sort of grecian look like this one?

Some of those Phase Eight dresses look lovely but whenever I try one on I find I have a big lump of material across the back, like enough I could fit a hump into. Is this because of my impressive norkage I wonder?

fairlytiredtonight · 04/06/2014 19:52

hampton please report back on that dress when you get it. I'm loving the sound of a waist and a curvy bum a la dibbler Grin

Do HOF still do those Mary Portas dresses?

I got one last year for a wedding, it was so easy to wear and converted my usual square shape into a "Mad Men" type creature....

hamptoncourt · 04/06/2014 20:02

Will do fairy

Here's the Mary Portas dresses

WallyBantersJunkBox · 04/06/2014 20:02

Yes, just checked - I would recommend trying the "no brainer" dress and the Kate Bodycon. They are very cleverly cut and look amazing on.
