On a 40 year old

Sorry, more age-related posts. Would this dress look good on a younger woman but make a 40 year old look like "mutton"?

i agree with Noddy, if something doesn't suit you any more (and it does happen) you can say so without calling them 'mutton'. I think it's a horrible word.

Bonsoir · 03/06/2014 08:04

I think the dress in the OP isn't going to do anyone any favours!

Eliza22 · 03/06/2014 09:24

Too short. Even if you're a skinny lady, I think this bottom-skimming look is only do-able for the very firm of flesh! Sorry to be ageist. Umm, why do you want to wear something SO short? I'm not old but can't (and wouldn't want to) wear that, personally.

MarshaBrady · 03/06/2014 09:26

It is very short. I think anyone would have trouble in that.

Blackjackcrossed · 03/06/2014 09:32

Not even for a 20 year old, it's too much.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/06/2014 09:33

I am 30 and 5'2" and I think it would be very short even on me. I am also large of chest so it would probably look incredibly slutty on! It's really hard to tell how clothes will look until you try them though, so if you like it I would order it and try it.

cardamomginger · 03/06/2014 09:52

I'm 42 and don't think I would ever have gone for this at any age - it's the print that kills it for me rather than the style or shortness. And I reckon the fabric will be very unforgiving. That said, I could envisage it with opaques, chunky boots/black flats and biker jacket and it looking very cool on someone (with the right figure and attitude) at any age.

specialsubject · 03/06/2014 11:05

as others note, ghastly dress for anyone.

but if you have the legs and are slim (and being 40 will not stop either of those, it seems to be the 19th century on here sometimes) then a similar style would be fine. In a less cheap-looking print and slightly longer as that is an impractical length.

madammecholet · 03/06/2014 11:16

Depends how you wear it. Teamed with a fitted black blazer and block heel courts, a pair of black tom ford sunnies and a black silk scarf, oversize black tote, you'd prob get away with it.

teamed with black stilettos & red lipstick, you wouldn't... nobody would.. even the model looks uncomfortable tbh. Grin

Notfootball · 03/06/2014 11:48

Thanks for your (very) honest opinions, some made me laugh - the 40 year old hooker one in particular. The model must be tall as I'm 5'7 and it comes about 2-3 inches above my knee.

I also dislike the word mutton which is why I put it in speech marks, I just mean all things negative: too try hard, too cheap, too clingy, too look-at-me-boys. It's something my husband would appreciate but I'm not dressing for men which I why I asked MN.

I'm toned and slim but it still looks a bit tits 'n' arse on me. I'm going to take it back.

burnishedsilver · 03/06/2014 12:51

Mutton.
It looks too cheap. I think a better quality look (not necessarily with the matching price tag) looks better at our age. Cheap and chearful looking is for the young'uns.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 12:56

I think that is very short -on anyone tbh. Bit Bet Lynch iykwim? If you are toned and slim there are tons of nicer dresses out there that will suit you :)

TSSDNCOP · 03/06/2014 19:16

Legs or boobs, never both.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/06/2014 20:17

It's short on the model, but the model is probably a giraffe. I am older than 40 and frequently wear short dresses (Never show any cleavage though). The biggest problem is likely to be with the fabric, which will probably be cheap and clingy. The length in itself wouldn't be an issue to me (waits to be called a hussy!).

ThisBitchIsResting · 03/06/2014 20:20

I think it looks dated. I would have worn something similar to my hen do ten years ago. Leopard print now seems to be more just for loose boxy tops and dresses, and the shape is dated too. I like it actually but no way in hell would I wear it, and I think it would def look hooker-ish! Mostly due to the style being dated though I think - you could expose a similar amount of flesh in a dress the same as that but sleeveless, block coloured, it would look more current.

noddyholder · 03/06/2014 20:41

The hookers I know dont wear dresses like that

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 03/06/2014 22:33

I am 40 and I wear that length and fit all the time and look fantastic fine (not just IMO - honest guv). However the issue is the cleavage rather than the shortness. As a PP said, the wrap look around the bust is quite dated. If it was a crew or slash neckline it might work with opaques and boots.

Also the colour is quite hard to wear in summer if you are pale of skin like me. And at that price, I bet the material is sweaty.

TheRealMaryMillington · 04/06/2014 09:29

lol at noddy's hooker mates (the ones I know don't either)

but weirdly the dress might be a bit ageing somehow, the wrap, the neckline, the length, the print all in combo. tbh its almost retro. i still say no.

noddyholder · 04/06/2014 09:49

I wouldn't wear it myself but defend others right to if they like it

noddyholder · 04/06/2014 09:50

I only know one 'hooker' and she is all gucci sandals and suits

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 04/06/2014 12:12

When I lived in the red light district they all wore anoraks, hot pants with tights and trainers. It was a cold northern city though. The only time I've ever seen hookers dressed in the stereotypical way was in Naples.

PeachyParisian · 04/06/2014 12:47

I'm 23 and wouldn't go near it, but I'm just shy of 5'10" so it would be above fanjo level!
