Hair cut problem

Itsfab · 01/06/2014 14:35

I haven't had my hair cut since August other than a couple of fringe trims. I stopped using my last salon as I didn't feel it was worth what I was paying and tried a local pop in and get it done place. Lovely hairdresser, did a good job but I couldn't get an appointment with her when I asked so I popped into another place for a fringe trim and came out 4 inches shorter Hmm. She said it would take months to get it as long as I wanted and then cut it all off with me not realising. Style was so not me and very predictable.

Went back to original salon and got someone a bit cheaper. First cut was okay and girl was nice. Next one she was patronising and then she abruptly left in between that cut and my next due appointment. I was seen by someone more expensive but paid the lower price as per the old hairdresser. He was okay but I am not prepared to pay his prices.

My hair needs a cut, it must do since it has been 9 months since it has had one but I have no idea where to go. A friend has recommended her salon but I have noticed her hair has got shorter and shorter and I don't just want her to cut loads off which is what a lot of hairdressers seem to want to do when presented with someone with long hair.

My original hairdresser won't do what I want and I have no idea what to ask for instead. I hate getting my hair cut as it is rarely a good experience but when I do find someone who is nice and friendly and does a good job I am loyal. I hate change so would like to find someone who can cut my hair for a long time.

No one to ask for recommendations really and now it has been so long I have almost developed a phobia about getting my hair cut ConfusedHmm.

A mobile hairdresser its what you need! Much more likely to listen and do exactly what you want.

Why won't your original hairdresser do what you want?

Itsfab · 01/06/2014 15:13

I had a mobile hairdresser years ago but she responded very rudely to my needing to change the appointment so I stopped using her.

I have no idea why the original hairdresser won't do what I wanted. Just said no. Not available I think Hmm.

Mobile hair dresser was the first thing that popped into my head too.

(And I have had and am having similar hair cut/hairdresser issues. I feel so grumpy every morning trying to salvage something decent out of my hair)

itsbetterthanabox · 01/06/2014 15:17

Show them with your fingers how much you want off. Or say a precise measurement that they can aim for like 3 centimetres. If you only want a trim you should get just that! It may be an idea to go somewhere that does dry cuts as hair springs up shorter as it dries in wets cuts.
They should be doing as you ask. That's what you are paying for! A place gets repeat business by making customers feel listened to and have the results they want. Be firm!

I started going to a barber shop that also does womens haircuts - about half the price of my old place and the hairdresser listens to what you want and advises whether it will work given the type of hair you have.

No real help I'm afraid as I don't like going to the hairdresser myself.
I don't like having my head touched.
I can't abide the loud music (I want a salon not a disco)
I have an idea of what I want but it's difficult to translate.
And when I'm sitting in the chair with the black cape and my hair (when it used to be longer) in a centre parting, wet, dark almost black, I look like Professor Snape (and not in a good way) Hmm

Your friend might have wanted her hair shorter and shorter. She might think "Heck if I'm spending £30 , I want it to show". Maybe she's going short in stages ?

Why not get a Home Hairdresser . Then you can look out some photos and go through what you want/don't want. You're in a 1:1 with them, not a salon.
And be realistic about how much time you spend on your hair (mine is nil , I wash it, condition, product, comb and walk out the door)
I'm not going to blow dry, occasionally straighten.

My hair is now a short layered style, so I need to commit to regular trims.
Oh joy ,

Cross Post at mobile hairdresser

ilovepowerhoop · 01/06/2014 15:35

is there a hairstyle you like/want? Take a picture in of someone with that hairstyle so they know what you want. I had pictures on my phone of the style I was looking for

Itsfab · 01/06/2014 15:56

I felt like they were doing me a favour by letting me be there and that I wasn't a valued customer. I have recently had a text reminding me of an appointment I hadn't made and two texts saying OH NO! It has been 12 weeks since your hair cut, time to book another & look at your fringe it needs doing. Neither of which are true since it has been 9 months since the cut. Obviously an automated text service.

I want waves in my hair. It naturally has a nice curl in parts but they always insist on cutting it out so it flicks out stupidly and then straightening it to an inch of its life Hmm. I hate the all straight look. I didn't want it straightened and she still did half of it.

I know exactly what you mean, I went to the same hairdresser for 13year, I got exactly what i asked for and always loved it, but over the last two year I've never been that happy with it, its as if she thinks she can do what she wants regardless of what i say because she "knows" me.

My hair needs cut as I've left it for 14 weeks (normally got it cut every 6 weeks) I'm looking into a mobile hairdresser as at least you can see their work beforehand on their websites rather than walking into a salon and not knowing what you will end up with!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/06/2014 16:10

My hair looks shit straightened too. My hairdresser is very experienced and although young, 35 ish, she's old skool and says lots of trainees now are lazy and can't blow dry properly. Not ALL of them but a lot as it's so easy and quick to straighten now.

I would google for a 5 star salon near you if you don't know a mobile hairdresser. 5 star will get you an experienced stylist who will know what to do with curly/wavy hair. It will probably be expensive but you won't need to go often by the sounds of things and you'll be pleased with your hair.

When you ring ask for someone who is good with wavy hair.

Itsfab · 01/06/2014 16:54

Thank you for the link. I will look now.

The one recommended by my friend is not on the Good Salon Guide. Hmm.

OP posts:
Itsfab · 01/06/2014 17:05

None have any reviews Confused.

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/06/2014 17:52

The stars cut out the need for reviews - stars are awarded like the hotel system so you know they are up to a certain standard before you even go. My salon only has about 5 reviews ( I just checked out of nosiness Wink) but it's the busiest salon in town and heaving with clients.

I imagine it's something you have to pay to be assessed like the hotel /B and B system, not all salons want that but it doesn't mean they aren't good.

Itsfab · 01/06/2014 18:35

I will take another look as I didn't notice any stars.

"If you’re shopping around for a typical haircut with no frills and no special treatment then you’ve arrived at the wrong place. This is because here at XXX we take great delight in working with every client as an individual, as a result we recognise that every head of hair has specific needs and everybody has defined ideas with regards to the design of their locks. We try hard not to do ‘standard’ and prefer to do ‘one of a kind which is unique to you’

Makes me feel this is for young and trendy clients.

I am neither.

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/06/2014 18:49

With respect I think you might be reading that the complete opposite to how it is intended. They mean they treat everyone as an individual and won't just do one hair cut for everyone.

NoUseForAName · 01/06/2014 19:22

What area are you in then you can perhaps get recommendations on here?

ilovepowerhoop · 01/06/2014 19:31

are you on fb? maybe ask on there for recommendations

Itsfab · 01/06/2014 19:47

I just feel it is me being an idiot and making myself out to be so useless with my hair that the hairdresser doesn't see the point in putting too much effort in to my hair.

I am rubbish at doing my hair. Don't have a clue what to do with the few products I have. Don't blow dry my hair very often and most of the time it is tied up in a pony tail.

I am in the Medway towns area I think it is called that
