Arm hair

I have dark hair so my arms are quite hairy, I've bleached it before now but never removed. Recently I've been looking at other women's arms to see what they do and most seem completely hairless.
What do you do? Should I wax or epilate it off?

I didn't realise women did this but then I don't think I pay much attention to arm hair. How hairy are we talking here?

Skinheadmermaid · 31/05/2014 22:52

I've been shaving mine since i was eleven, it still grows back soft, not stubbly like my legs. Takes two minutes in the shower, i have very pale skin and dark hair and like my arms to feel silky. No ones ever said anything, i shave most of my body, i just like to feel smooth.

Milmingebag · 01/06/2014 01:04

Oh I have fur on my arms and shave it off. Pale skin with black hair so very noticeable if left. I have done it for so long that it is just what I do now as routine.

I even have to shave my big toes.

squoosh · 01/06/2014 02:06

fingersonbuzzers lots of people who post on S&B manage to be feminists too.

VenusDeWillendorf · 01/06/2014 02:58

Well Squoosh, you can tell the feminists by their shoes, innit? Grin

I get rid of my arm hair and leg hair. (Dark noticiable hair)

I swim, so it's on view and I feel less like a yeti when it's all gone, I'm sure it's improved my speed as well as drag is reduced Wink

OneLittleToddleTerror · 01/06/2014 05:18

I have very dark hair and neither wax nor epilator works. The regrowth is dark. And the hair has to be like 5mm before they can be plucked out again. Looks a bit like short AstroTurf and very unslightly.

I used to shave every other day to just around the elbow. Now I swear by by Lumea. It's all hairless bliss and I can't remember the last time I have to retouch the arms. Only have to do underarms once every 2-3 months. It is really really effective for dark hair.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 01/06/2014 05:26

I only stopped at the elbow because I'm not visibly hairy on the upper arm. I have been trying to get rid of my body hair since a teen and I will be 40 this year. It is not a new thing! I am dark haired and reasonably hairy. I can't remember how hairy as I haven't seen it for more less 25 years? But I'm sure as hairy as DH but he is not a very hairy man.

nooka · 01/06/2014 06:17

I really really hope this is a minority thing. I have dark hair and pale skin and have never considered doing anything to my arms. Yes they have hair on them, but there is nothing wrong with that. My dd already feels the need to shave her legs and underarms I really hope she doesn't decide that she must do her arms too. The 'beauty' pressure on women is getting ridiculous :(

AtSea1979 · 01/06/2014 09:38

Thank you everyone, def want to get rid. I need have a hysterectomy in 4 weeks so was considering getting full leg and Brazilian for that so think I'll get my arms done at same time and then keep on top with epilator as don't have time/money for all that waxing every month.

fingersonbuzzers · 01/06/2014 09:47

eh, squoosh? I don't recall saying they didn't?

fingersonbuzzers · 01/06/2014 09:49

Ah I see what you mean squoosh - because I said s and b wasn't the right place for this conversation? what I meant was that I didn't want to derail a perfectly innocuous thread about hair removal. But you go ahead and pick a fight if you want to.

OuterFromOutersville · 01/06/2014 09:55

I know, I understand the feminist argument against this.

OuterFromOutersville · 01/06/2014 09:56

Oops, didn't meant to post yet.

I understand the feminist argument against this. I don't think that women's arms should be hairless, I just wish that mine were less hairy.

OuterFromOutersville · 01/06/2014 09:59

Can you post photos on this topic Grin?

Swannery · 01/06/2014 10:00

If you people will just stop doing it, slightly hairy arms will be the norm again and we can be happy with ourselves the way that nature made us. FGS.

myusernameis · 01/06/2014 10:05

I quite like my arm hair... That's weird isn't it?! It is blonde though but is quite long.

OuterFromOutersville · 01/06/2014 10:05

Thanks Swannery, we're actually the consequence of the problem, not the cause Grin.

Love from 'you people'. X

Nocomet · 01/06/2014 10:08

My arms are hairy. The hair tends to bleach in the sun and I refuse to worry about it.

In fact quite the opposite it's soft and downy and sexy and I like it.

DH has hairy arms so why the fuck shouldn't I.

Blackjackcrossed · 01/06/2014 10:10

I quite like arm hair, I don't have any naturally but I always though it looked attractive on other people and was very surprised to learn my friend had her's removed by laser. Really hope this isn't a new thing. Sad

Swannery · 01/06/2014 10:12

Women do this because they see other women doing it (see what the OP originally said - she noticed other women having no arm hair, so now feels that she has a problem, having had no concerns about it previously). If women basically go on strike over body hair, or at least over worrying about body hair they didn't worry about previously, then everyone will be used to slightly hairy women (the way they're used to very hairy men) and no-one will feel pressured to spend half their time pulling little hairs out all over their bodies. It's pretty disgusting when you think about it.
Oh God, I just noticed my cat is covered in unsightly brown hairs. Getting the waxing strips out now - it's going to be a big job.

OuterFromOutersville · 01/06/2014 10:14

I do see your point Swannery. But I've always hated my arm hair, even as a child - I could clearly see that I was hairier than those around me. As an aside, I think it has lessened as I've got older, and I am in a bit of a fuck it phase. Nonetheless, I still dream of removing it all.

Meglet · 01/06/2014 10:34

I do it because I was bullied at school 30yrs ago (junior and senior school). My arms look charcoal grey if I don't deal with the hair. It's nothing to do with modern levels of grooming.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 01/06/2014 11:58

I think the OP posted a perfectly normal question in S&B. This is not the feminist forum. I feel I have very hairy arms and legs. I don't feel comfortable with hairyness on my arms just like I don't like hairy pits.

I actually consider myself a feminist. I don't like pink toys not because it is pink, but that the gender stereotype the things usually role play on. Like beauty fashion. All about being pretty. I don't have problem if we have pink science or doctors set. Or a pink bike. I correct people when they say cleaning and cooking is women's work.

ReadyToBreak · 01/06/2014 13:10

I didn't copy anyone. I've hated my hairiness since I was a child. I just wish my mum let me wax/shave earlier ie as a teenager. She went ballistic when she found out I'd shaved my legs at nearly 16.

mswibble · 01/06/2014 13:19

slightly hairy arms will be the norm again

But what about the very hairy marys amongst us who arent slightly hairy?

I have shaved mine before but I hate the horrible stubble feeling when it grows back and I was really conscious about anyone touching my arms or me brushing against anyone. My arms left like brambles!
I have epilated but im too much of a wimp to do it regularly!
Ive got my jollies in 3 wks so have a wax booked in, full arm, half leg and bikini. Its just one aspect of my summer regime.
