Indian wedding reception tonight- dress help needed

I realise I've left it to the last minute, but we are going to an Indian wedding reception tonight and I have no idea what to wear. Most of my dressy dresses are black which I'm sure is a no no so I've ordered a load to try on.

I've narrowed it down to two, possibly three, but I don't know what level of dressiness I should be aiming for and I'm worried I will look OTT.

Any opinions on whether these are appropriate or not would be much appreciated (shoulders would be covered with the strapless dresses):

I think one or three. The last one I went two was full of ladies wearing bright colours and lots of bling. If you go for one I'd say you would need some accessories, three could be fine as is.

I like the first one - what would you plan to wear to cover your shoulders?

Do wear your best gold jewelry, if you have any!

Have fun! Indian weddings are brilliant fun.

I have a sheer off white cardigan/shrug type affair from Reiss which looks nice with both one and two.

I've got gold coloured costumer jewellery (lots of Kenneth Jay Lane) or understated proper gold (think Alex Monroe), would the costume be better as it's more dramatic?

Thanks for the help Smile

I like the colour of 1, but do feel that you would need to have your shoulders covered.

Which dress would you get best future wear out of?

The Indian weddings I have seen have been full of bright colours and very smartly dressed men and women.

missmargot · 31/05/2014 15:35

Shoulders covered is no problem, I really don't want my upper arms on display in public.

I would probably wear 3 again, but to be honest I have all the evening dresses I need for the sort of functions I normally go to (dull, black tie work dos) so this is probably a one off.

I love the first one but I don't see the point in wearing it if you're going to cover the shoulders. The shoulderless look is what makes it for me.

Number 3 is nice too.

3 is lovely, really elegant.

enormouse · 31/05/2014 17:31

I love them all.

Is it the temple/gurudwara ceremony or the party bit you're going to?
Is it an islamic or Sikh /hindu wedding?

Maybe a wrap or a pashmina of some sort would be a good idea with the strapless ones.

enormouse · 31/05/2014 17:33

I think 3 is the nicest.

myrtleWilson · 31/05/2014 17:33

I really like number 3

Thumbwitch · 31/05/2014 17:36

I'd wear 3 on the grounds that I wouldn't want to create a stir by wearing a bandeau dress - it might not be "the thing" to have your arms and shoulders so exposed, unless you're keeping a wrap on all the time, that is.

Bling it up with bright jewellery and maybe a bright floral corsage thing.

Mum2Pea · 31/05/2014 17:36

I am indian and the actual reception (as opposed to wedding / gudwara) is all about colour.
I think the 1st one is best and shoulders are not a problem.
Jewellery, especially bangles are a winner.
have fun!

Thumbwitch · 31/05/2014 17:37

If it is a Muslim wedding then you definitely need to keep your arms and shoulders covered, by the way. I don't know about other religions but I know that one.

My sister's and I used to buy most of our Indian wedding stuff from here to give you an idea of level of dressiness/sparkliness
