Premium vs cheaper make up

I like Boots No7 which is reasonably priced and good value but I also love Clinique. Ideally I like a mixture of both. I like Clinique tinted moisturiser, eyeliner and lipstick and N07 for blusher and mascara. I also like No7 foundation and tinted moisturiser and have had compliments when wearing it but somehow I feel better with the Clinique one and it seems to last all day without fading. I like the moisturiser surge tinted moisturiser and it seems expensive for a small bottle but it does last a while. The quickliner I can get on Amazon for half the price of in the shops, wheres the tinted moisturiser seems to be the same price anywhere. The item I find hard to justify the cost of is the Clinique lipstick. I can't find my shade cheaper anywhere (creamy nude) and its now £17 per tube which I think is pricy seeing as I can get a nice shade of No7 lip gloss for half the price. I do only have one shade of lipstick at a time so I guess that works out the same as having a few different cheaper shades.

Any views on this, do you think premium make up is worth splurging on or are cheaper brands just as good?

I'm always unimpressed with very expensive make up. Tbh I really rate Loreal and no 7, they've really upped their game recently imo.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/05/2014 17:26

And tbh I would never pay loads for a lippie as there are so many good reasonably proceed ones on the high street these days.

I worked for clinique and chanel for 15 years.

I never even brought everything premium when I had 65% discount. Some of its good... foundations especially tend to be better in the more expensive ranges because of the quality of the pigment but I don't think there is much difference between brands in terms of lipsticks and lip glosses etc.

I tend to use a mixture of rimmel and max factor now.

Fridayschild · 31/05/2014 17:50

I use pressed powder rather than foundation, and that is worth paying a bit more for. Everything else is just as good from Rimmel, Bourjois and other popular brands, though I have bought some very expensive stuff in my time.

Lipstick is tricky to get right, I agree. Can you try some other brands till you find one that suits you?

If the Clinique lipstick is the only one in the right shade I would just buy it. Sounds reasonable as part of an overall spend that includes some budget options. If anyone goes to the states get them to pick it up for you for a small saving.

NYX have lots of nude shades, worth having a look on their website?

Tbh I find No7 pretty overpriced.

With lipsticks especially, it's the packaging that makes the difference. I searched everywhere for red lippie that suited me and had a nice case

Fairy did you buy Clinique or Chanel as presents for people (I'm sure they would have expected it Grin )

FluffyDucky · 31/05/2014 20:35

I agree with what Fairy has said. Foundation I would always spend more on but other bits you can mix. No7 eyeshadows are not great, but the eyeshadow sticks and cream are brill. I recently treated myself to Urban Decay Naked palette, amazing!
Lipglosses, again the expensive ones I've used (like MAC lipglass) I thought were awful and sticky, but not some other cheaper brands.
It's finding what works for you.

Fairylea · 31/05/2014 20:53

Oh yes :) always brought it as presents and the fragrances were lovely :) just not over fond of the make up to be honest! I used to like the clinique 3 step skincare and the chanel foundations though. Most of the counter women I worked with all swore by max factor mascara and no 7 lipsticks :)

I recently treated myself to a Bobbi Brown lipstick - loved the shade but the lipstick was horrible, dried out my lips and left them in a right state.
I used to buy Estée Lauder, Clinique 3 step, Lancôme moisturiser when I was in my twenties - I started using Aveeno in my early 30's to moisturise everything - I don't notice any difference.
I always feel they are the emperor's new clothes. Didn't Alan Sugar suggest if he hadn't gone into electronics, he'd have gone into cosmetics because there was so much money to be mAde.
